Although taken for granted by millions of Americans, the choice to obtain a college degree mystifies economists. Teenagers making the first significant financial decision of their lives are paraded through prospective student tours—essentially timeshare presentations for minors—and finally make an arbitrary pick where they will spend around a quarter-million dollars of borrowed or parental money. For some, the degree results in open doors and respectable careers. For others, it’s a scam that wastes their time and money.
Across the nation, colleges are losing customers because young people are wising up to the risks of credentialism-based debt. These institutions are no longer able to tout learning as their main selling point;

My youngest step daughter is going to Ball State. Indiana has a program for students with very good GPA’s in high school to get their tuition paid for. There is still room and board which is just under $12 per year and she’s getting student loans for that. She plans to move off campus next year, not sure how much savings, if any, will be gained. Her plan is to be a special education teacher. Has she ran the numbers? Probably not. Her mom just likes bragging rights on Facebook, her dad, well, that’s his little princess lol. I did buy her Thomas Sowells Basic Economics, which I’d bet sits unread. There’s only so much a stepmom, even a brilliant one, can do. Her original plan was to be a forensic psychologist. Thank goodness she abandoned that plan, she wouldn’t had seen a real paycheck for several years. My own two children are big time self employed capitalists with nary a college degree between them. I’m so proud of them. ❤️❤️

I am rethinking leaving anything in my will to go to college education for my grandchildren.
The universities have turned into indoctrination centers.
Instead I am leaning toward dividing it among them to train themselves in a marketable skill and buy equipment.... like chef, welding, electrician, landscape design, farming...

I’m glad my two sons, now making big bucks, skipped college. Me, I went the whole route, ended up with an A..A., a Bachelor, and Teacher’s Creds. But, with no debt.

There will still be a function for those Universities even after the bulk of the students quit attending. They will remain the junior teams to feed players into the NFL.

College is the place where you can pay/borrow big bucks to get indoctrinated over a four year period and then walk out the door with a worthless degrees. Do yourself a favor, look at trade schools.

I have a grand child that graduated from a prestigious university, The child has a grand, grand job with one of the famous high tech companies and resides in a very "progressive" liberal city that is in the news frequently. It is interesting that an electrician has to be hired to wire a connection for the new Tesla (the green deal, you know), not having a clue of how or what has to happen to wire the connection. Also, a plumber has to be called to screw two pipes together so the new gas grill will work, again not having the slightest idea of how to accomplish the task. So . . . the point is trades/crafts is a very important commodity to nurture and encourage. The tradesmen mentioned earlier in this post, enjoy an very fine living and life.

Good. I am glad these kids are wising up. College now is a way for lazy professors, who use assistants to do their work in most science classes and they can hang out doing nothing. The tuitions are obscene and used to pay ridiculous salaries to the administration. For example, the Chancellor of UGA earns a million a year and has the use of a private plane. What does he need a plane for.? He lives on campus.

in recent years, employers have been foregoing degrees as a measure of ability. The last job I applied for administered an intelligence test as a criterion. My son-in-law had to complete a couple of coding challenges for his latest position. College degrees are no longer the gold standard of hiring for many jobs.

When electric vehicles are finally shoved down our throats, there's a wide open field for high tech mechanics just waiting to be tapped into. Heck, with today's "regular" cars, it nearly takes a non electrical engineer / non computer scientist, to work on them.

My daughter opted not to attend college and got certified in cosmetology instead. She is a hair stylist and we all know how well that pays - just ask Bill Clinton about that $200 haircut way back in 1994. She has been employed full time and financially independent since graduating high school 15 years ago.

Small private liberal arts colleges are on their last legs. Soon, they will fall like dry leaves.

If there is any chance to change the destruction of western civilization that is well on the way to success, the pestilence that is academia [K-Phd] must be faced and dealt with. With prejudice.

Certain professional jobs require an long, difficult education. For example, engineering. Now, the truth is that perhaps 40=50% of engineers actually wind up doing a substantial amount of REAL engineering work in their careers. Many are skilled project managers who, frankly, could have picked up most of the project management on the job......and most do, since (at least when I went to engineering school) no significant amount of project managment is (was) taught.
But, a good mechanical engineering degree is a very solid background for almost any career path, since you have learned how most of the world actually works, and picked up some solid mathematics and logic skills.
But for most 'business' jobs.....you are better off with a couple of semesters of Jr. college work with classes that would relate to your specific needs - maybe accounting or basics of marketing, or a few things like that.
Pick and choose from Jr. college, and you'll get ahead without getting enslaved and running through the brainwashing hate-America machines that colleges have become.
