The jury in Jussie Smollett’s trial felt they were doing him “a favor” when they convicted the former “Empire” actor on five counts of disorderly conduct, but not a sixth, one of the jurors told the Sun-Times Friday. The decision was one the jury struggled with, the juror said.
In the end, “we all thought we were doing Jussie a favor,” said the juror, who asked not to be named.

In a civilized society, we are co-dependent with our fellow citizens of all backgrounds to fairly and objectively decide on the guilt or innocence of our other fellow citizens. It's comments like this, rationalizing a "favor" in such a decision, that makes many of us question whether a particular subset of our society can ever be trusted to follow this critical social compact.

jury's should never do "favors" for defendants, they already have been given the greatest favor a society can give to someone who commits a crime, a trial by a jury of their peers.

If this idjit had a semblance of a brain..he would throw himself on the mercy of the court..confess to everything..would probably gotten a lighter sentence.

"The 39-year-old was charged under Illinois’ disorderly conduct statute, which encompasses a wide range of offenses, from making prank 911 calls to placing harassing calls as a debt collector.
He faced six counts of disorderly conduct under a subsection of the law that prohibits false reports to police. [SNIP].
The charges were listed as class 4 felonies, which are among the least serious felonies in Illinois. But convictions can still carry potential prison time of up to three years.
Although Smollett was found guilty . . . five of the six counts, his lack of criminal history and the fact that no one was seriously hurt make actual time behind bars unlikely. It’s more likely that a judge would sentence him to probation and perhaps order him to perform community service."

Jussie could have pleaded to a lesser charge but he was arrogant and refused admit guilt. The State's Attorney's office did him no favors by not requiring an admission of guilt as part of a deal. That left the charges merely "withdrawn" and allowed them to be re-filed.

Releasing this information before sentencing will not make the judge happy.

"...you've got the mother sitting there..."
The lawyers had her there for obvious reason - maternal instinct influencing the women on the panel. It had the intended affect but the evidence and testimony werr more compelling

“I just hope that [Smollett and his attorneys] know that we went in there with an open mind,” the juror said.
Who, in their right mind, cares what a criminal defendant thinks of them?

I guess if you are going to prosecute a black man in Chicago then you should always add an additional token charge so the jury can ease their collective sense of racial guilt by doing him a favor and tossing the token charge. I'm so glad that jury understood their responsibilities under the law.

So, in other words, the evidence was overwhelming.
Yet, a political hack of a DA in Cook County chose to ignore it?
That should be impeachable
