The judge presiding over the homicide trial of Kyle Rittenhouse confused observers after making a strange and off-color joke inside the courtroom on Thursday. "I hope the Asian food isn't coming.. isn't on one of those boats from Long Beach Harbor," said Kenosha County Circuit Court Judge Bruce Schroeder as the court was preparing to take a lunch break. (Snip) "It harms our community and puts us in the crosshairs of micro aggressions as well as actual physical violence," said John Yang, president and executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice-AAJC. As Vermont reports higher than ever COVID-19 case rates, state health officials have been trying to understand why. How can a state that did so well during the first part of the pandemic — even garnering national recognition — be doing so much worse now? "There is not one simple answer," said Vermont Health Commissioner Dr. Mark Levine during a news conference Tuesday. "But, there are clearly factors that have come together to create the situation that we're in now." Slowing the spread is critical right now to prevent Vermont's hospitals from being overwhelmed with people sick with the virus, Levine said.

HELENA, Mont. — A new map dividing Montana into two congressional districts for the first time in decades was finalized Tuesday, triggering disappointment from Democrats who hoped to craft a different western district that would give them a better chance of winning in an increasingly Republican-dominated state. (Snip) In a bitterly disputed process that played out over several months, Democrats managed to keep liberal college towns Missoula and Bozeman in the western district, but lost the state capital of Helena to the solidly red eastern district. The final map was proposed by Republicans on the bipartisan redistricting commission and selected by

The number of container ships stuck off the coast of Southern California reached new records on Tuesday. According to data from the Marine Exchange, a total of 111 container ships are bobbing at sea around the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, waiting to dock and unload. That breaks the previous record of 108 vessels reported on October 21. The two ports remain clogged despite efforts to speed up the processing of containers amid a surge in consumer demand for goods. The White House announced a shift to an around-the-clock schedule in October and a new looming threat of

President Joe Biden's climate envoy John Kerry said the United States won’t have coal plants by 2030. “By 2030 in the United States, we won’t have coal,” Kerry said Tuesday during an interview with Bloomberg at the United Nations's COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland. “We will not have coal plants.” The U.S., the world’s largest economy, generates nearly 25% of its electricity from coal despite the rapid retirements of coal plants in recent years that have struggled to compete with cheaper and cleaner natural gas and renewable energy. Kerry’s comment is among the most explicit to-date of a Biden

New York - Amid an array of discouraging election results for Democrats last week, there was one under-the-radar outcome that was especially perplexing. In New York, one of the country’s most progressive states, voters overwhelmingly rejected initiatives that would have expanded voting access in future elections. The vote, which came in a year when Republican-led states have passed dozens of laws to restrict voting access, left voting rights advocates stunned. (Snip) None of the measures came anywhere close to passing. Republicans waged a well-funded and aggressive campaign to oppose the amendments, a move that caught supporters of the proposal off

Oregon Democratic Senator Ron Wyden's son, a Florida-based hedge fund millionaire, put his liberal dad and his 'cronies' in Congress on blast Sunday night after the lawmaker used an exchange with Elon Musk to again promote his proposed billionaire's tax. (Snip) His son jumped in with a forceful response on Sunday evening. 'Why does he hate us / the American dream so much?!?!?!?!' Adam Wyden wrote. 'Reality is: most legislators have never built anything… so I guess it’s easier to mindlessly and haphazardly try and tear stuff down.' He then flaunted his own financial success, writing: 'Thankfully, I think I

California’s coronavirus case rate is twice Florida’s despite mask mandates and recommendations to prevent the spread of the virus. "You’re paying for your success, which is weird," Ali H. Mokdad, professor of health metrics sciences at the University of Washington, told the Mercury News when asked why Californians aren’t "reaping more reward for their adherence to health guidance." (Snip) California’s vaccination rate is higher than states such as Texas and Florida, but that still hasn’t stopped the outbreaks. Sixty-two percent of California’s total population is fully vaccinated, while Florida reports 60% and Texas 54%. Gov. Gavin Newsom and other California

Remington Firearms announced Monday that it will invest $100 million in a factory and research operations in Georgia, the Associated Press reported. Remington's headquarters will be moved from New York to LaGrange, Georgia, which is southwest of Atlanta. The country's oldest gun maker is one of many corporations to leave the Northeast in favor of the politically gun-welcoming South. "We are very excited to come to Georgia, a state that not only welcomes business but enthusiastically supports and welcomes companies in the firearms industry," Remington CEO Ken D'Arcy said in a statement. Two Colorado school districts will cancel classes this week because they don’t have the staff to stay open. Boulder Valley School District and Adams 12 Five-Star Schools both announced they won’t have class on Friday. It will give both students and staff a four-day weekend, since there also won’t be school Thursday in observance of Veteran’s Day. “With the Veteran’s Day holiday being on the Thursday, it created a large number of staffing shortages,” said David Lockley, president of the District 12 Educators Association, the union representing Adams 12 teachers. In a letter to parents about the decision, the district
