Debunking the 1619 Project

Original Article

Mary Grabar has authored a serious, mature book that should be in every American household and classroom. Its message is so critical to understand that it might usefully serve as required reading in a test and qualification for American citizenship. (snip) Ms. Grabar doesn’t merely "debunk” the 1619 Project, she devastates it, by a relentless, professional marshalling of facts and data, and with thoughtful argumentation, choice sourcing and careful footnotes. For its depth in historical research, the book reads very smoothly. I found it a “page-turner”

And don't forget that the vaunted New York Times is behind the 1619 project, started it and supports it. And other papers and news outlets take their word as given by God. Be very suspicious.

Glad that somebody is finally pointing-out that slavery was not unique to colonial America. Every maritime nation in the Western Hemisphere participated in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Most African captives were taken to Spanish and Portuguese colonies in South America and the West Indies. The particular Africans cited in the 1619 idiocy were taken by the Portuguese from what is now Angola, and were enroute to Brazil when the Portuguese slave ship was taken by a British privateer. If they had not been taken to Virginia, they all would have been doomed to a life of toil on a Portuguese sugar or tobacco plantation or to work in the gold mines. In reality it was more like they were rescued.

Any scholar of the history of nations should admit that instances of slavery exist in all known cultures, at least those for which we have documentary evidence. Since this amounts to thousands of known cultures, clear and convincing evidence exists to show that being free from slavery is very unusual, and has not been reported ANYWHERE before 1850 or so. If earlier instances of cultures without slaves exist, I would like to know about them. Much store is set on the culture of ancient Greece, beginning about 500 BCE. Note that most ancient Greeks were slaves. Perhaps 1 in 10 Greeks were free persons. Yet that civilization is valued and respected. Were the Greeks to be ignored because of slavery? I might say that the only cultures where we do not know about slavery are the ones with no written records (which have been deciphered) at all. The 1619 Project has a clear and distinct goal: bring us all under the yoke of a totalitarian Communist Dictatorship. Bring us all the blessings of Karl Marx. Put a yoke on every neck, and subject every person to total control and supervision. Of course that would destroy the Times, but such destruction would be in a good cause.

Can't use facts. Facts are racist, and a symbol of white privilege and supremacy! Facts are evil. That's the dumb and dishonest response 1619 project supporters will give.

When Abraham Lincoln spoke the prophetic words "a house divided against itself cannot stand" — in a speech before the Illinois Republican state convention in 1858 — he was a relatively unknown politician. He saw the obvious: North and South were hopelessly divided over the issue of slavery — or more fundamentally, states' rights — and a breakup was all but all but unavoidable. This came to pass in just a few years' time in the form of the Civil War. Is America nearing a similar point in 2021?

Have we ever had a president who in mere months made so many dumb, intemperate decisions, thereby precipitating major crises? You’d think that the Afghanistan and border fiascos would suffice for one four-year term. But the smart money is that we haven’t seen the last of Biden-manufactured crises. Biden is a nightmare version of Pig-Pen of the Peanuts comic strip.. A perpetual cloud of incompetence, conceits, corruption, and shabby political motives swirls around him. Biden insists that 97%-98% of the population must be vaccinated to end the COVID risk. However, as it seems possible that mass vaccination is a trigger for aggressive new variants, one can’t help thinking that he wishes to propagate the virus going forward to the midterm 2022 elections and beyond. Three glistening new buildings in downtown Seattle with 165 studio apartments — originally to be rented at market rates — will instead house the homeless. The Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) is buying the buildings with taxpayer dollars for about $50 million, with federal COVID-19 relief funds splitting the cost equally. Seattle City Hall is contributing about $25 million, while also using “American Rescue Plan Act” funds. A large portion comes from Washington State’s Department of Commerce. Left-wing Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan, so unpopular she can’t run for re-election, claims the deals will house people quickly and cheaply, compared to the time and cost required to develop similar projects from scratch.
