Los Angeles County supervisors voted unanimously Wednesday to phase out oil and gas drilling and ban new drill sites in the unincorporated areas of the nation’s most populous county.
Over 1,600 active and idle oil and gas wells in the county could be shuttered after the 5-0 vote by the board of supervisors. A timetable for the phaseout will be decided after the county determines the fastest way to legally shut down the wells.
Among the sites is the Inglewood Oil Field, one of the largest U.S. urban oil fields. The sprawling, 1,000-acre (405-hectare) site, owned and operated by Sentinel Peak Resources, contains over half

They should phase out autos and all things made with plastics, and a million other things that these idiots have no idea come from oil and gas.

LA will get everything it so richly deserves. I suspect most of the nation will cheer their self destruction.

So, if you really want to make a statement, Sentinel Peak Resources should ban selling Oil and Gas to the county. Let them buy it elsewhere.

LOL! Up to 50000 feet of sediments. Infused with oil. That is the Los Angeles basin. These supervisors don't have a clue. La Brea tar pits prove some of that oil is very near the surface. The basin holds a huge amount of oil - it has been exploited going on 100 years - still does to this day, and as technology improves more of that oil can be easily exploited. But lets feel good about wonky science and fear in general. Fear lets you insist on countermeasures that you know nothing about. Good luck on yer drilling ban. In LA high heels can strike oil.

They should disconnect all those power lines bringing in that nasty, contaminated electricity from other states while they are at it!

Since this is LA County, they might be surprised when gasoline imported from other areas is cheaper. Aside from that this is just another step in the suicide of California.

Los Angeles that twice a day commute for 3 hours a day (slow traffic) just became more expensive no more 'joy riding' on the weekends. Can't be wasting the ten dollars and upwards of that expensive gas. Who are the idiots that come up with these crazy and dangerous ideas? Time to buy that electric automobile I suppose.

According to article: "The measure that passed also called for residents, the oil companies and other stakeholders in the community to explore what else can be done with the privately owned land." WHATTT???? It's privately owned land, therefore, the only stakeholder is the land owner. The landowner gets to decide what is done with the property.

Nothing like putting a whole bunch of people in a city government, when none of those people can see beyond the immediate issue. That oil field does not pollute the air, there is no water that is contaminated, as the water from the wells is disposed in salt water disposal wells, and the people living near the oil field moved in knowing full well that the field existed before their homes were built. When the land is stolen from the company, and it is developed, and the city fathers all get their kickbacks, everyone will be happy, and they can say "See what we did for you," when in fact what they'll be doing is looking at the mirror and beaming with pride that they're as corrupt and dishonest as the politicians in Washington D.C. This whole thing is despicable.
