Earlier this month, President Biden signed an executive order with a lofty goal: he wants over half of all vehicle sales to be electric vehicles by 2030. The CEOs of GM (GM), Ford (F), and Stellantis (STLA) attended the White House event and threw their support behind the measure, pledging to put billions of dollars into manufacturing EVs and to work with Democrats to have American workers produce them. “There’s no turning back. The question is will we lead or fall behind in the race for the future,” Biden said on Aug. 5. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D., Mich.), who represents

Are they going to include building nuclear power plants for the massive increase in electricity that will be needed to keep all the cars running when the sun don't shine and the wind don't blow? Can our current grid take such an increase in kw's without melting / blowing up the transformers? I'm sure a nuke plant will be aesthetically pleasing right next to Mt. Rushmore and in the middle of Yellowstone.

I believe many households would need two vehicles. One gas powered for longer trips and one electric to putt about town. Maybe some kind of co-op for car sharing for people who need to travel.

It's not a race for the future, unless you define the future as impoverished totalitarianism. There is no significant threat from CO2 or climate change that mankind can do anything about; CO2 remains a beneficial greenhouse gas that will stay in the same concentration whether cars are powered by petrol or anything other than nuclear-based electricity. And forget about the batteries; none will last as long as a normal car does now, will cost $40k or more to replace, and will not be recyclable. Market-savvy entrepreneurs could really make a bundle by skirting frivolous and unnecessary environmental regulations.

Such profound reasoning. It’s like Absentia of cortex saying “I cant think of any reason no to.”
Well, there it is. There’s no turning back.
Why is there no turning back? Turning back from what? How does turning back differ from veering in a different direction?

I can't wait for this. CA can't keep the lights on now. TX wind turbines froze in the cold because they were so short sighted they did not add the de freezer to the turbines. Hey lib dummies. They use COAL to make electricity. If you get rid of coal what are you gonna use? They think they flip a switch or plug something in and voila instant electricity.

What perfect timing. Yesterday there was an article from the UK that described how the government was already cutting power to those homes that had electric vehicles between certain hours in order to keep the grid from going down! OMG. Is that the perfect preview for what's going to happen here or what? Dead little Priuses and Teslas as far as the eye can see...
My eyes are tearing up just thinking about it (with laughter).

I stopped for lunch yesterday across the street from a vehicle charging station the other day...made a mental note of which cars were charging when I sat down, ordered lunch, at lunch, and left...not a single charging car had finished its charge.
Eight morons with their electric cars evidently had the time to wait over an hour to charge their cars.
The only people I know with that kind of free time are on some kind of assistance....govt, trust fund, parental, etc. Nobody that works for a living has that kind of free time...every day.

Democrats haven't figured out yet that the cost of higher wages. Vacation time. 401K's, healthcare, OSHA regs, environmental regs, compliance regs taxes, tarrifs and legal fees are all included into the cost of any product. That the democrats are bent on increasing the cost of all of the above seems to be lost on them.
The end result is a BOOMING Chineese economy. Because that's where most of the manufacturing will end up.

Why this infatuation with electric cars which are powered by electricity, electricity which comes from fossil fuels, including at least 30% from coal burning plants? And it cost more than $10,000 to replace a Tesla battery and the batteries are hazardous waste.
Liberals love chaos. In the future, they'll be mandating electric cars that are ultimately more harmful to the environment.

Does this idiot know where electricity comes from? There is a lot of logistics that come into supporting an all electric transportation system, not including how to handle a nationwide power outage. The human race, whatever that is, because to the best of my knowledge Race refer to the 4 species, like Black, White, Asian and Indigenous which are included in the biological species called Homo, will survive. It has for many thousands of years. For a quick look at the climate, our prognosticator should know that our temperate here comes from the sun.

A great example of low-level thinking with the inability to see beyond the immediate. As OP mentions no electrical grid anywhere would be able to handle such an increase in electrical demand on top of the current demand, costs would skyrocket. In addition, battery production and disposal have a much larger negative impact on the environment on multiple levels.

Electric cars, because everyone in New America has a garage in which to charge these things overnight, instead of outside in the rain using a giant extension cord. What, you don't have a four car garage like our government class does? Tough luck, Charlie.

Do electric cars get less Miles per Charge (MPC) in really cold weather? If so, I'm sure they will love the electric cars in rural Northern Minnesota, Alaska, North Dakota, and all of the other colder climates and can't go anywhere or constantly run out of charge.

Am retired now but as a field engineer it was not uncommon to get a call at 7 PM to drive from Houston to Mobile, Alabama. This would be during the time that normal folks would have their cars at home charging. This would also be the time that the sun don't shine on a nice calm day. What do you suppose my chances would be to make it past Lake Chares Louisiana ?

If you want to understand the problems with electric vehicles and have access to Apple TV you should watch the "Long Way Up" series with Ewan McGregor. Ewan and his friend decide to ride electric motorcycles from the tip of South America to Los Angeles supported by two prototype electric SUVs. Even with millions of dollars of manufacturer support they continually have to be bailed out and recharged from the diesel generator truck that follows them. The problem is that Level 1 power charging and battery efficiency is totally dependent on temperature. If you live in a cold climate and leave your electric vehicle outside it takes forever to charge and has a very limited range. The main excitement of the series is watching them try to stretch their range to make it to the next charging station. Unless you like a lot of drama in your life you should forget about electric vehicles anytime soon.

Why not just have the US Government purchase a new electric automobile and charging device for all Americans, with “disadvantaged” minority Americans being given priority, who certifies that he or she is a leftist, liberal, or socialist Democrat supporter.
While all other Americans and especially Americans who are identified as Trump Supporters, including all the “White Supremacists” out there across the country be required to pay full price plus a premium to cover the costs of the US Government program outlined above.

Dumb stupid people. Electric cars will not be the majority of vehicles on the road by 2030 no matter what they want. The resources aren't there to make the cars. The infrastructure isn't there and is not being built, and unless there is a major break through in battery technology that lets an electric car get 400 plus miles per charge, and the ability to recharge in minutes, they just won't be practical for most people.

Yesm #17, they do. Batteries put out less power in cold weather, and the cars require more power because of the lubricants in the wheel hubs being cold and stiff, and there is added power required to heat the vehicle.

Our local electric co-op put a charging station outside of their offices. It's about a half a mile off Interstate 10 between San Antonio and Houston, even got a billboard on the interstate promoting the charging station. A couple months ago, they had an article in their monthly magazine about the success of the charging station. I forget the total numbers, but I think in an average month, they had NINE different vehicles use the charging station (some of those nine could have used it multiple times). Now yeah, we're not in a heavily urban area, but we aren't in no-mans-land either. Lot of expense for nine people to charge up their Tesla.
Somewhere I once was told the infrastructure (not including, of course, the infrastructure cost of the allied diversity program coordinators, consultants, and child care agencies) to power a gas-station sized recharging station would be ennormous.

So people need to buy expensive electric cars that do not go very far. They will need to stop often to charge up their cars. How long will it take to get going again? A 400 mile weekend trip may no longer take just a weekend once you add in an extra16 to 24 hours of charging time. How about driving from NY to Florida for a vacation? No more 24 hours straight through with stops for gas. Add multiple long stops at the charging stations so you trip now takes 4 days each way and you never get to Florida. People will be trapped doing local travel only unless battery technology improves. Is this all a move to control people's movements?

For me, I'm still waiting for someone, anyone, to explain the last few ice ages and subsequent warming periods.
Until they do, the case for electric cars (ostensibly to reduce CO2 and its hypothetical impact on climate) has no basis in science.
If anything, electric cars will increase overall CO2 output due to energy inefficiencies of first generating electricity from fossil fuels and then transporting it to charge all of those cars, after having generated even more CO2 by building batteries and charging stations in every home and on every street corner, instead of them just burning gasoline.

When VW first came out they were a 55 gallon drum on wheels.
I bought a Mini. It had a piece of cable on the door to open it and the windows slid to one side. It cost me $1200 Dollars, and got 40 miles to the gallon. Now the Mini's are $30,000 and get 25 MPG if you are lucky.
Remember when Pick-up trucks cost $1700 dollars and had rubber rugs and a radio if you ordered it optional?

They leave out that the power grid and the electrical service panel in most homes are ill-equipped to handle cars being plugged in for hours at a time. There will be black outs and electrical fires on a daily basis.
