Florida condo near building collapse site deemed

A Florida condo building less than six blocks from the ruins of Champlain Towers South has been found to be structurally unsound — and residents are moving out in droves. Regent Palace in Surfside, whose residents funded their own engineering study after the June 24 collapse nearby, got an urgent notice from city inspectors about serious problems there — and didn’t wait to pack up and leave, WTVJ-TV said. “Honestly, you know, the building was analyzed and deemed unsafe, so we’re not gonna take any risk,” Regent resident Theo Magnat said.

Comments:

I would be willing to bet that there are others in this condition.

Makes me wonder if the same contractor built others, or even this new one, as the one that collapsed.

Re #1, the other building is low rise, built 70 years ago, and looks entirely different. The conditions that affect them - weather, ocean water, etc. - would be the same, however.

Well, some folks learned something useful from that sad disaster. Too bad the Champlin Towers folks waited three years. I had an opportunity to discuss the few photos released before the collapse with a structural engineer colleague (also retired) of mine a couple of weeks ago. We were both immeditately seriously concerned about the exposed rebar in primary structural beams in the pool area underground photo, very much wanted to know what the other beams looked like. A shame that they waited 3 years. Heavily spalled concrete exposing rusting rebar in reinforced concrete primary structure is very bad, and can't be ignored. I saw no pix in the article showing serious problems, but if the engineering report says that there are problem.....shoring is comparatively cheap. And many of these buildings have no first floor partition walls, which provide lateral stabilization to columns, and while not generally considered primary structure, can and often do provide some added support over just a 'column forest' without partition walls.

Which is why I live in single family houses that I build myself. Even then I look at new construction in progress around me and wonder how they get away with it.

Same here #5. I have no desire to live in a 10 story hive or even visit or rent one. Some people love it and good for them but I’ll rent a house even if it’s two blocks from the beach.

The "silent majority" was mentioned by President Nixon in 1969, who labeled middle Americans who weren't protesting the Vietnam war or joining the counter culture — two activities being over-reported by the media of the day. The silent majority didn't speak up much but respected traditional American values with a good-natured approach to political issues. They were silent, but they voted. In 1972, Nixon was re-elected with one of the largest landslides in U.S. history — 520 electoral votes to only 17 for McGovern. Today, most Americans focus on work and family and trust that our elected officials will work for us,

Since January 6, the Democrats have played up the kerfuffle in the Capitol on January as the worst thing ever in American history, while ignoring the innumerable times leftists have aggressively invaded the Capitol. This is different, and the wrongdoers must be punished. The problem with this narrative, though, was revealed on Monday when the first person charged with a felony for January 6 got sentenced. Was the sentence life imprisonment? Beheading? No. It was eight months in prison. Talk about a narrative fail. Within minutes of January 6, the Democrats, who had turned a blind eye to the incredible violence of 2020,

Can a civilization continue to function when the most basic truths cannot be spoken, yet blatant falsehoods are dogma? When radical upheavals are justified not by wisdom, but by disorienting barrages of phony "outrages" and "crises"? Think of a great ship. A nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is an integrated system of immense complexity, requiring thousands of specially trained men to operate and maintain. What if someone suddenly replaced a carrier's human crew with 3,000 excitable chimpanzees? The giant vessel would soon drift to a halt, catch fire, and sink — while the chimps threw feces at each other.

How far can someone be goaded and bullied before he fights back? Most bullies are sociopaths and narcissists, adept at shifting the blame to their victims. They manipulate situations so the victim is the one who gets punished for the fight they were goaded into. Does this sound like what is happening right now, out in the open, on a national level, for all to see? Are we powerless to stop it? If we're not powerless, what can we do? The left cried "insurrection!" on January 6 and, ever since, has used that cry to intimidate us. The whole Capitol event, I'm convinced, was orchestrated.

An Oklahoma woman who was wanted by authorities in connection with an alleged serious crime wound up in custody after reportedly asking about reward money for her own capture on the Tulsa Police Department’s Facebook page. Tulsa cops had designated Lorraine Graves as their weekly most wanted person on July 14 for an accessory to murder charge, an announcement that was shared on at least two social media platforms. “What where’s the reward money at?” Graves allegedly asked in a now-deleted post (which was screengrabbed, however, by cops) in the Facebook page comments section which may or may not have been a form of online trolling that boomeranged.

First they were victims of the condominium collapse in South Florida. Now, they’re victims of identity theft. Several of the people who died in the June 24 collapse of Champlain Towers South in Surfside have been targeted by thieves who have ransacked bank accounts and opened credit cards in their names. The account of Gladys and Antonio Lozano, married nearly 59 years and found in their bed together, was compromised by a hacker the day of their funeral, their son Sergio Lozano told WSVN News. The crooks filled out a change of address form and created online banking for his parents’ account, then withdrew money via Zelle.

The families of 9/11 victims are enraged over the media and leftists portraying the U.S. Capitol riot as being worse than the horrific terrorist attacks that occurred almost 20 years ago, leaving nearly 3,000 dead in their wake and launching wars across the globe. Families who lost loved ones on that tragic day told Fox News that they are disgusted and sickened by the comparison of the two events. While one person tragically died during the Capitol riot at the hands of an anonymous officer, 9/11 took thousands of grandparents, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and loved ones from their families forever.

Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer addressed rumors of his potential retirement on Thursday. The 82-year-old justice has sat on the bench for nearly 27 years and is under pressure from the far-left to step down so that President Joe Biden can appoint another liberal justice while Democrats hold the majority in the Senate. Breyer said that his own health, and the court, are the factors behind his decision. "Primarily, of course, health,” Breyer told CNN of his decision making process. "Second, the court." He added a firm "no," when asked if he was retiring in the immediate future.

Go woke, go broke. Major League Baseball is learning the hard way that catering to the far left isn't remotely helping their desperate attempts to resurrect what once was America's proud pastime. MLB's All-Star Game, played Tuesday night, predictably tanked in the Nielsen ratings, delivering the second-lowest official total in the sport's history. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the game narrowly avoided "a third straight all-time audience low" with 8.24 million viewers, "about 100,000 more than the 2019 game's 8.14 million." Except, it's quite possible that this could indeed be the game's lowest ever viewership.

Well that didn’t take long. Just days after it was announced, Biden’s soviet-style intimidation program is in full swing. Video that was released on Wednesday shows vaccine agents peddling the experimental jab in the neighborhood streets of Charlotte, North Carolina. Health department workers joined the vax-peddlers so they could harass and vaccinate residents right at their front door. They aim to “eliminate any excuse” that people may have for making their own decision about their health. They ensured that you can’t just send them away by ‘saying’ you would get vaccinated, if you turn down a jab at the door you will surely make their ‘list.’

Details of the masking discussions were reported by the Washington Post. The White House is weighing these options as the “Delta variant” of the virus is spreading, even among the vaccinated. The report noted that federal health officials are considering whether they would update masking guidance, asking all Americans to wear masks indoors in public places. The White House would likely face strong pushback from vaccinated Americans

(snip) Asked an unchallenging question of 12-year-olds and vaccination, he drifted off in the middle of a sentence, and, as he so often does, looked down, got that Deliverance banjo player look on his face, and appeared to be listening to something in his earpiece, and then strung together a sequence of words that were not grammatically related to the rest of the sentence, but which, on their own, were coherent.

As summer reaches peak heat, a recent piece in Time magazine on air conditioning exemplifies the rot pervading academia and threatening the nation. Eric Dean Wilson, an instructor and graduate student at City University of New York, wrote about how air conditioning will destroy the planet. Failing the pandemic test, as World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus believes the world is, means even countries with high vaccination rates could once again find themselves back where they were in March 2020. Ghebreyesus has long advocated for high-income countries to help fill inequities in health care by sharing vaccine doses with other countries' most vulnerable populations. Focusing on a country's own people and not the world's population allows for more mutations of the virus to pop up and in a global world, a deadly variant in one place poses a threat to everywhere.
