Rodents chow down on Teslas,
causing thousands in damage

Elon Musk may have a rat problem. Fans of the South African billionaire’s electric cars say rats, mice and rodents are chomping down on their Teslas. And despite having dropped tens of thousands of dollars to buy the pricey vehicles, Tesla refuses to cover the damage.(Snip)The pest apparently found its way into Williams’ Tesla and gobbled through several internal wires that were insulated with soy rather than oil, which critics claim makes them more appealing to rodents.(Snip)Automakers have been getting slammed for years with complaints of their allegedly rat-friendly soy-based wiring. And like Tesla, they have all refused to cover the damage,

Comments:

Cheap but tasty soy-based wiring is "green" indeed when it costs $5000 to get your air conditioner wiring fixed. Shady for the car companies not to include an additive that would repel rodents from doing this. In a very American twist, the article mentions a company that sells electric mats costing $1,500 to $1,700 to keep your soy-based insulation safe from rodents.

Tesla had best change that wiring. I am sure those affected went to their insurance companies first and were told that their expensive comprehensive coverage excludes damage by “vermin”. Lawsuits to follow quickly.

The problems of rodent damage to wiring using soy-based insulation has been known for a long time. I believe this will cost Tesla some big non-soy based bucks.

We have an M5 Miata Speed that we store in an old barn every winter. First year, they munched on all of my wiring. Very expensive. Dealer told us to fill the car and engine bay with dryer sheets. We have been doing it for 5 years now and no further damage.

This is more indicative of the Bronx's rat problem due to incompetent management of the city rather than a car problem.

Years ago squirrels chewed through the AC wiring on my car. My next door neighbor was an elderly fellow who had been feeding the squirrels from his front porch. I reminded him that God has provided amply for these critters and that there was no need to supplement their diets. Instead of hunting for readily available food sources, the squirrels got accustomed to the more easily available peanuts - and auto parts. I still blame him for the damage to my car. I was in graduate school at the time and couldn't afford to have the car repaired. I have a half-woke colleague who is very proud of the fact that she drives an electric vehicle (except when she has to make trips of more than 200 miles). Can't wait to share this story with her! Add rabbits to the list of critters. A friend opened his F150 hood and a rabbit jumped out toward him, liked to scared him silly. He had to have the truck rewired.

A few years ago, I took my Mazda 3 in for an oil change and the service guy asked me to come look at something under the hood. On top of the battery was a sizable assortment of little pitas and scraps of pizza. Some squirrel was using my car to stash his food. My car is always in the garage, but there must be an “in” somewhere. I’m just lucky he didn’t gnaw on wires.

Few illegal immigrants caught and released at the border on promises of turning themselves in to ICE later are actually showing up, defying Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ assurances of a “high rate” of compliance and leaving the department with few options for tracking the migrants down. At best, the appearance rate is less than 25%, according to data from members of Congress and from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It may actually be much lower. That means thousands of illegal immigrants have already defied their first orders from Homeland Security and become fugitives, and that bodes ill for the chances of getting them to comply with their court dates

America’s dwindling domestic shipbuilding industry has lawmakers worried about the Navy’s ability to keep up with China and Russia. Now that China has surpassed the U.S. to have the world’s largest navy, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle agree that the service must make strides toward building a larger fleet. Reaching the goal, however, is hobbled by a domestic shipbuilding industry that has been in decline since the mid-1990s. The Navy currently operates just four public shipyards tasked with maintaining the nuclear-powered fleet and roughly 20 private shipyards certified to build and maintain the service’s conventionally powered ships.
