Missouri Congresswoman Cori Bush sparked controversy on Sunday with a tweet in which she said Independence Day was only a holiday for white people.
'When they say that the 4th of July is about American freedom, remember this: the freedom they’re referring to is for white people,' she wrote. 'This land is stolen land and Black people still aren’t free.' Bush, who was first elected to the House of Representatives in November, has been widely viewed as the newest member of the so-called 'Squad' of congresswomen known for being outspoken on their left-wing views, and she is no stranger to controversy.

Engineers believe a Miami condo that collapsed killing at least 24 residents may have been built using less reinforced steel than the plans called for—as officials planned to blow up the remaining wing with 121 people still missing. Inspectors identified the issue at critical places in the base of the building in the first details about possible issues in the quality of construction at the 13-story Champlain Towers South in Surfside.
Forensic engineering expert Allyn E. Kilsheimer confirmed there were signs that the amount of steel used to connect concrete slabs below a parking deck to the building's vertical columns may have been less

Austin, Texas—Republican Allen West, the former Florida congressman and firebrand who rode into office on the tea party wave a decade ago, said Sunday that he will run for governor of Texas in a bid to again seize on restless anger from the right. His odds are far longer this time around: Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, who is up for a third term and may also be eyeing a 2024 presidential bid, has already locked up the endorsement of Donald Trump–whose voters West would need to have any shot at winning a GOP primary in Texas. The hurdles don’t stop there.

More than 1.3 million people are currently awaiting deportation decisions in immigration courts, and the average case has been pending for nearly three years, according to new data that sheds light on just how broken the U.S. immigration system has become. A decade ago just 300,000 cases were pending, and even three years ago it was fewer than 770,000 cases, meaning the government has netted more than 550,000 cases on its docket since 2018, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University. Jessica Vaughan, policy studies director at the Center for Immigration Studies, said the growth is a sign of just how lax America’s border controls

The New York Times sparked fireworks with an Independence Day report on the political implications of displaying the American flag—just weeks after being forced to defend an editorial writer who said she was “really disturbed” to see Old Glory flown by supporters of former President Donald Trump. The Times article—with the online headline “A Fourth of July Symbol of Unity That May No Longer Unite”—suggests that Trump supporters have embraced the flag “so fervently” that liberals have “all but ceded the national emblem to the right.”(Snip)“What was once a unifying symbol–there is a star on it for each state, after all

The top Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee accused Democrats on Sunday of “playing with fire” in refusing to back a thorough probe into China’s role in the outbreak of the COVID19 pandemic. Rep. Michael McCaul of Texas said on “Fox News Sunday” that further scrutiny was required into the origins of the pandemic that has killed more than 600,000 Americans. To date, Democratic congressional leaders have refused to back a widespread investigation into whether China played any role in the outbreak.(Snip)“We are getting information from other sources and I believe there’s a high degree of probability now that it came from that lab,”

Traverse City, Mich.—President Joe Biden stayed mum on policy during a Saturday trip to Michigan, focusing instead on cherries—and cherry pie and cherry ice cream—and voters who were mask-free as coronavirus restrictions have eased.(Snip)Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer greeted Biden when he arrived midday in Traverse City, which is hosting the National Cherry Festival, an event that attracted Presidents Herbert Hoover and Gerald Ford in the past. They skipped the festival, however, in favor of a cherry farm in nearby Antrim County, where Biden pitched his immigration plans when chatting with two couples from Guatemala who were picking fruit.

Gov. Cuomo’s youngest daughter isn’t just out and proud, she’s getting specific about her sexual orientation—sort of. Michaela Kennedy-Cuomo, 23, who came out in an Instagram post last month as “queer,” declared herself “demisexual” this week during an appearance on Instagram. “Demisexual people only feel sexually attracted to someone when they have an emotional bond,” according to WebMD. “When I was in elementary school, I feared that I was lesbian. When I was in middle school, I came out to my family and close friends as bisexual. When I was in high school, I discovered pansexuality and thought, ‘That’s the flag for me.’

Swimming caps designed for natural black hair won't be allowed at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, with the sport's world governing body saying they are unsuitable because they do not 'following the natural form of the head.'
Critics have slammed the decision as racist, with one calling it an 'example of the whiteness of swimming.' The British brand Soul Cap sought to have its products officially recognized by FINA, but its application submitted last year was rejected. The company makes extra-large caps designed to protect thick, curly and voluminous hair.(Snip) The Switzerland-based governing body said Friday that it is currently reviewing the situation
