The Statue of Liberty is a 'meaningless symbol of hypocrisy' because of America's history of racism, sexism and anti-immigrant sentiment, according to the Washington Post's art and architecture critic.Philip Kennicott, a Pulitzer Prize winner, argued in an essay Saturday that the monument - which has stood for a century as one of the most iconic examples of American freedom - represented 'unfulfilled promises'.He added that the statue was irrelevant to non-white Americans, using as evidence the absence of representations of the statue when he visited a Chicano art exhibit at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington.

And I think Philip Kennicott is a “meaningless symbol of hypocrisy”. So is every Leftist who denigrates this country while living better than 90+ percent of the rest of the world. Get lost, loser.

I guess I'll be the one to ask. Who is Philip Kennicott, and who cares? If he is in the WAPO, of course I never heard of him. The only way I'd pick up that rag would be in a HAZMAT suit.

Yes, I agree. This country is horrible and racist and treats minorities terribly.
That's why millions of people are trying to come here every year both legally and illegally. They must be dumb masochists to want to come here.
In comparison, the number of people trying to break into any number of communist, Islamic or kleptocracies is about zero.
Where do these numbskulls come from who write this garbage? Do they really believe their own nonsense? I don't get it. A third grader could shut them down in a fair debate.

Meanwhile, if we allowed every person on the planet that wanted to live in the U.S., our population would exceed the population of both China and India combined.

Ahem—That is a museum of American art. Being beloved and respected by Americans does not convert French art to American art. Why would the French sculpture, The Statue of Liberty, be in a collection devoted to American art?

He's an idiot. The real name of the statue is "Liberty Enlightening the World" as she stands facing the open ocean. She's challenging the world to live up to the example of the United States who welcomed those who sought real freedom from oppression and want that was absent in their own countries.
If this jerk wants to deny that is what this country has always been about he's the one who should be cancelled. It's also quite a joke as millions of illegal "Chicano's" (I'm assuming those are people of Latin origin) are pouring into this horrible place daily.
I am also assuming that this idiot simply lumps all "whites" into one group. Well, we come from all over the world. Different nations, different distinct cultures, who also fled slavery and oppression. Maybe we should hyphenate and demand to be named when "whites" are discussed. I'm now going to be known as a Celtic-American, we also have Nordic- American's and Romani-Americans, Slavic Americans, Anglo-Americans, Sino-Americans, Hellenic-Americans, Deutsch- Americans, Walooon-American's, Italia-American's....I could go on, and on, and on.
Calling each of us by our nation of heritage will be difficult but it MUST be done each time the generic term "white" is used by any of these "woke" folks. It will make for a long broadcast with no time for discussion but, hey...we must be "fair."
Maybe we could come up with a motto that encompasses ALL people who came to this country before and after it's founding? "E Pluribus Unum was meant for all people, regardless of your "hyphen" or "letter." No matter how anyone got here, for the last 246 years this country has confronted it's flaws and fought and died to right them.
Let's stop this foolishness right now.

Of course, he realizes that he himself could be cancelled in the not too distant future? I deserve a life sans hypocrites, just as he says he does. Or does he somehow think I don't deserve the same? And why is that?

I've had it with these brain-dead Marxist clowns masquerading as newspaper columnists, who try to tear down every historic symbol of my country, the last best hope for the world. It's time they started paying the price for their traitorous mewling. They should be "doxxed" - let everyone know where they live.

I have to disagree, Phil. I've had the freedom to live where I want, to travel where and when I chose, to pursue the vocation of my choice, to say what I think, all things that i saw were not present in the countries behind the borders I patrolled in Europe in the 1960s.

office. Care what the writer thinks? Upper East & West Side NYC woke liberals? For all of the failures the people claim that we have they are never able to point to a better freer nation to move to. Nobody claims that we are perfect but at least we acknowledge our history and flaws and work to fix the problems.

Philip Kennicott is not the first fool to render the Pulitzer Prize meaningless. Joseph Pulitzer only published newspapers. He'd be as useless as his famous prize if he were still living.
The dearest woman I know escaped from the tyranny in Europe just before Poland was raped by Herr Hitler. I remembered her today at church because of her undying love of the United States of America, where as a young woman she entered with her family at Ellis Island. She was such a sweet mentor to my mother and to our family. Every July 4th she'd tell us the wonders of America the Beautiful.

The Statue of Liberty made no promises. That Emma Lazarus thing should have been removed long ago….never should have been there in the first place.

The left has always been anti-freedom. They will take away all our rights if they can get away with it. Currently, that looks very likely since nobody is stopping them.
They can blow up the Statue of Liberty just like those Taliban 'freedom fighters' did to those Hindu statues in Afghanistan. Then they can erect a statue of Barack Obama in its place. Obama can be the new symbol of America.

#21, I agree. Some people actually think the Emma Lazarus poem is some sort of government edict, rather than a thoughtlessly-considered bit of text that was thrown onto the statue.
Had it said, "Give me your best and your brightest, no matter what your origins" and perhaps "Come here to love this nation, not spit on it and whine about how things were done better back in the old country", it would have been a better representation of the unique gifts America has to offer to hard-working, committed citizens.

When you're woke, you can't see the wood for the trees. At least rejoice in the good and stop concentrating on the less good. Nobody's perfect. Think of what has been achieved and think about how to ensure that the good things - the freedoms- persist into the future. Freedoms should be our birthright, not something that government should be able to take and give at whim.

And row after row of white grave markers with the names of the Union dead, almost all white, that died to free blacks are also 'meaningless symbol of hypocrisy' and 'unfulfilled promises'. Sad that liberals hate those that died to free slaves and preserve the Union.
