Bay Area cities prepare to
restrict gas leaf blowers.
A statewide ban could be next

Two more Bay Area cities took sides in the region’s long-running crusade against gasoline-powered leaf blowers in recent weeks, with officials in Novato and Hayward moving toward banning the contraptions, increasingly derided as noise, smoke-belching nuisances. Oakland, too, has vowed to get serious about enforcing its rules against their use. And the entire war may swiftly come to a head if a state Assembly bill seeking to ban new leaf blower sales statewide wins approval.

FTA:Some have suggested that leaf blower operators need to show more courtesy, shutting off the blower when people are walking by. Yeah - that would really work. Most leaf blower operators are focused on their job. They would never finish their work if they had to look around and turn the machine on and off multiple times.

I don’t know how it is in CA, but around here most of the people using leaf blowers are Mexicans who work for lawn services. Isn’t this going to be detrimental to POCs? How racist of CA.

Lets see: gangs, drugs, crime, poverty, fatherless households, terrible schools with super high dropout rates, etc, etc, etc -- but Oakland is going to ignore all of that to deal with the "horrendous problem" of gas powered leaf blowers?!?!?!?!? I remember when the lie-beral Utopia of New Orleans decided to ignore their problems of gangs, drugs, crime, poverty, fatherless households, terrible schools with super high dropout rates, etc, etc, etc, and spend millions of tax dollars to remove statues. When the statues were gone, they were just left with even worse gangs, drugs, crime, poverty, fatherless households, terrible schools with super high dropout rates, etc, etc, etc.

Americans should be able to run whatever machine they like as long as it doesn't annoy or harm neighbors. The leaf blower, however, is one of the dumbest things ever invented and people who use them are of questionable sanity. In my rural neighborhood, people will spend an hour or two getting every leaf out of the yard only to have the wind return most of them almost immediately. Since the operator must wear ear covering to run the darn thing that should be a clue that it bothers neighbors.

They could require mufflers on the blowers. They put them on gasoline powered lawn mowers. They require them on vehicles. While making that change, also require a on/off switch on electronic beepers. It makes sense for them on industrial equipment in many instances, but when they are building a new building next door and the machinery has to move forward and back 10 feet a thousand times an hour, we get that the machine is there, and suggest it is safe to turn the beeper off.

They are certainly annoying. My neighbor uses a landscape guy who has one that must be completely unmuffled. It sounds like a B-17 at full take-off power and I have to go inside when he is using it. That said, I find it silly that SF is worried about this since it's become a crime-ridden failed city.

I've wanted this city to ban leaf blowers for years! They are insanely loud (especially in condo echo-canyons) and there's no need to use them in an urban area. Use a broom to clear the sidewalk of the handful of leaves and twigs. On a positive note, whenever I walk past someone who is using a leaf blower in the neighborhood, they always shut the blower off until pedestrians pass.

WASHINGTON — Two weeks after celebrating America’s near “independence” from the coronavirus, President Joe Biden is confronting the worrying reality of rising cases and deaths — and the limitations of his ability to combat the persistent vaccine hesitance responsible for the summer backslide. Cases of COVID-19 have tripled over the past three weeks, and hospitalizations and deaths are rising among unvaccinated people. While the rates are still sharply down from their January highs, officials are concerned by the reversing trendlines and what they consider needless illness and death. And cases are expected to continue to rise in coming weeks.
