Officials in Australia are rebranding shark “attacks” as “a negative encounter” as experts argue the former had given the nautical predators a bad reputation not based on science. At least two of the six Australian states have reportedly changed the way they officially describe shark attacks. In New South Wales, the government’s shark reports now refer to shark “incidents” or “interactions,” and in Queensland, the state government refers to them as “a negative encounter,” Sky News reported.(Snip)Proponents argue the word “attack” has created a culture of fear around sharks, one often depicted in movies. “Sharks are very curious animals,” Leonardo Guida, a shark biologist

My husband and I had a shark enocunter in the wild. We saaw a nurse shark while snorkeling. That is super different than a shark attack. BTW, it is Great Whites, Nurse, and Bull Sharks that are the attackers, not the other myriad species.

Negative encounters? The number of human "encounters' with sharks that could be considered POSITIVE could be listed on the back of a postage stamp.

I guess the same could be said for mosquitoes. Our problem is that sometimes we invade their space and get bitten.

Future beach goers will be surprised when their "negative encounter" results in a loss of body parts. When you minimize what a shark attack is, the stupid people won't be prepared. Lord knows we have a lot of stupid people. At least 85 million in the US alone.
A negative encounter is something that you walk away or swim away from.

Are they going to do the same thing with their deadly Box Jellyfish? How about the Brown Snake? And all of the other deadly creatures who inhabit Australia? They seem to have the world’s deadliest in every animal category.

99.999% of shark/human encounters are fatal for the shark, after all many sharks are quite tasty. Are these considered negative encounters as well? Words are supposed to communicate a thought or idea, by using the wrong words the wrong idea is communicated.

Like #8, I encountered many nurse sharks when snorkeling in the Keys, years ago, and a few in the Bahamas much later. Non-aggressive sharks. We always got out when bull or blacktip sharks were seen, though.
As a young teen, I even grabbed the dorsal fin of one, having heard that you can "get a ride" on nurse sharks. Not a good idea. No attack, they really are not aggressive, but imagine grabbing a board with very coarse sandpaper glued both sides, connected to a pickup truck with a chain. Hold the board tightly while the pickup truck accelerates hard. OUCH!. The skin eventually grows back. "Salt in the wound" is a real thing, too.

Sorry, the phrase "negative encounter" is already taken. It refers to any interaction with a liberal.
