The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced a new naming system for variants of Covid-19. From now on the WHO will use Greek letters to refer to variants first detected in countries like the UK, South Africa and India. The UK variant for instance is labelled as Alpha, the South African Beta, and the Indian as Delta. The WHO said this was to simplify discussions but also to help remove some stigma from the names. Earlier this month the Indian government criticised the naming of variant B.1.617.2 - first detected in the country last October - as the "Indian variant", though the

Glad to hear WHO has been active in the fight against this pandemic. With some additional funding WHO can rename other diseases like elephantiasis to remove some of the stigma from pachyderms everywhere.

Walk up to any random person on the street and ask them what the 3rd letter of the Greek alphabet is and see if they answer or even understand your question. Ask them where the word alphabet came from and ditto. WHO is just trying to clarify the whole variant thing dontcha know.

Iowa Dems feel hopes fading

KEOKUK, Iowa — Democrats lost last year's election for Iowa's 2nd Congressional District by the narrowest margin in a House race in almost 40 years. After the six-vote heartbreaker, some expected Democrat Rita Hart to immediately declare a rematch in the southeast district long held by her party. So far, no Democrat has stepped up to run. The hesitancy to jump into a district now as competitive as they come is one measure of Democrats' fatigue in a state viewed for decades as a true battleground. Even as the coronavirus pandemic gradually wanes and President Joe Biden's job approval remains strong

Minneapolis is having another violent and deadly weekend. Several shootings took place between Saturday night and early Sunday morning, starting with a homicide investigation on the north side of town. The first incident began at 9 p.m. Saturday; it was a homicide at Uptown Avenue North in Minneapolis. Then, about 7 miles away and an hour and a half later, Minneapolis police say a person was shot in their car on Clinton Avenue South. There was another call for a gunshot victim 20 minutes past midnight. This time, off of Portland Avenue, a male victim was shot inside his apartment

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) would likely be among the first to admit that he's not the most popular name in Republican circles these days, but that doesn't mean his successful bid for the GOP presidential nomination in 2012 can't serve as a template for future contenders. The Republican Party's 2024 picture is muddled. The consensus seems to be that until former President Donald Trump makes it clear whether he'll run, potential candidates will lay low. One way they can do that and still make some headway if they do ultimately enter the scrum is to get involved with 2022 House

(Snip) Since taking office four months ago, the President has spent more weekends away from the White House than he has stayed there, almost three times as many. For months now, my friends who are millennials have struggled to find single-family homes on the market in the suburbs, exurbs and even in rural areas — and when they do, they face daunting bidding wars. Millennials are leaving the city in droves as urban centers like New York and San Francisco see their populations decline. At the same time, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a housing shortage and skyrocketing prices, with “feeding frenzies” for houses, notably outside major urban centers. Millennials (age 25-40) are part of this dynamic, seeking to make their lives outside of cities and to

Democratic senator Kyrsten Sinema was absent for Friday’s historic vote on a proposed Capitol riot investigation, and she still hasn’t said why. After Republicans blocked a bill to establish a commission investigating the 6 January Capitol attack, Democrats directed most of their anger at the 35 GOP senators who voted against it. But there were also two Democrats who didn’t even show up for the vote: Senator Patty Murray, and Ms Sinema. “She will be entering into the Congressional record that she would've voted yes,” the Arizona senator’s spokesperson, Hannah Hurley, told The Arizona Republic. Nine killed by gunfire in another mass shooting. Hateful attacks on Jews and Asians rising. All of that happened in the last week. Americans should be coming together in celebration of declining coronavirus infections this Memorial Day. Instead, the bursts of public violence and hate reflect deep political division.
