Op-Ed: Home prices are going

For months now, my friends who are millennials have struggled to find single-family homes on the market in the suburbs, exurbs and even in rural areas — and when they do, they face daunting bidding wars. Millennials are leaving the city in droves as urban centers like New York and San Francisco see their populations decline. At the same time, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a housing shortage and skyrocketing prices, with “feeding frenzies” for houses, notably outside major urban centers. Millennials (age 25-40) are part of this dynamic, seeking to make their lives outside of cities and to

Comments:

The 'urban generation' that did not want to own anything and embraced city life suddenly wants out. Not mentioned is inner-city violence and a kooky 'woke' culture that is repellant.

A lot of them thought that being part of a diverse urban culture was cool. And then BLM disabused them of that idea.

Oh No! There goes the neighborhood! Please oh please keep your stupid wokeness in the cities with you. Just stay put. These are highly self-conscious people with little self-knowledge; they're selfish and egotistical. Some, however, will sniff around, wondering where that awful smell is coming from, will look at the soul (yes, soul) of their shoe and realize that they've brought the putrefaction with them, and then choose to begin the hard work of introspection, study and reformation. Those who come out of the Left over to conservatism are extraordinary people. Every community is enriched by them... too small in number.

I suspect it isn't so much that homes are worth more, its that the money is worth less. Since we no longer have a gold standard, maybe we have a real estate standard. Agree with other posters. We already have too many houses in my formerly rural Appalachian area. If you must come here, please leave your opinions, voting habits and dialects in the dung heap you came from. You are a refugee, not a missionary.

A real estate bubble (not unlike the 2005 - 2006 bubble) is underway and will burst. There's speculation in play. Buyers are offering cash above sellers' asking prices. This time the recession will not be limited to real estate.

Our rural home has doubled in value, which is nice to know but we still need a place to live. We’re here for another 15 years, assuming the world hasn’t imploded by then. I started a garden and we have bunnies and squirrels aplenty. Absolute worst case, 7 well fed dogs. I’m only partially kidding.

I am sure rent and eviction moratoriums have nothing to do with the shortage of homes on the market, otherwise the LATs would have mentioned it. After all just because rental homes have been held hostage by the government for over a year and are the most likely to be listed for sale is no reason to think it could effect prices.

Beginning in 1973, when he was a United States Senator from Delaware, Joe Biden had a ritual: nearly every evening he would hop a train back to Wilmington after his work day on Capitol Hill, spending most nights and weekends at the place he considered home, 100 miles from Washington. (Snip) Since taking office four months ago, the President has spent more weekends away from the White House than he has stayed there, almost three times as many. Democratic senator Kyrsten Sinema was absent for Friday’s historic vote on a proposed Capitol riot investigation, and she still hasn’t said why. After Republicans blocked a bill to establish a commission investigating the 6 January Capitol attack, Democrats directed most of their anger at the 35 GOP senators who voted against it. But there were also two Democrats who didn’t even show up for the vote: Senator Patty Murray, and Ms Sinema. “She will be entering into the Congressional record that she would've voted yes,” the Arizona senator’s spokesperson, Hannah Hurley, told The Arizona Republic. But they must provide “reasonable accommodations” for workers who refuse the shots because of a disability—including pregnancy—or for religious reasons, the agency said. The decision may mean unvaccinated employees could be required to wear masks, or to work remotely.
