Brazilian auto racer Helio Castroneves made history after winning his fourth Indianapolis 500 race on Sunday. He is now one of four drivers to win "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" four times. Castroneves, who took the checkered flag in 2001, 2002 and 2009, held off runner-up racer Alex Palou, winning by a mere .4928 of a second. Castroneves claimed his first three wins with Team Penske, but Sunday's win was the first Indy 500 win for Meyer Shank Racing. CORRECTION*

Enjoyed watching Helio win the race and his exuberance after the race. It was one of best 500 races in a long time.

I live in Indy and May is usually a pretty fun place to be. A lot was cancelled this year. Hopefully everything will be up and running next May. But it turned into a beautiful day, fantastic race, a very happy winner. It was all good. Not quite normal but we're getting there.

I lost interest in this race when they made all the cars the same. Back in the day, you could see Ford 8 cylinder Novis race against Offenhauser 4 cylinder cars. Andy Granatelli once entered a turbine car. Over the old time years builders often were only limited by their imaginations and pocketbooks. Jim Clark drove a rear engine car in 1966, a first. Hmm, nowdays all the car come from the same cookie cutter design, engines, suspensions...all the same. Well, I guess we are used to that now. Tuesday on your way to work on the freeway look at the cars around you. You could put a Mercedes star on a Honda, a KIA emblem on a Chevrolet, or a Ford oval on an Audi...you get the idea. The average person would not know the difference. When we were a little boy no one would ever confuse a 1960 Ford with a 1960 Chevrolet or especially with my favorite (made from beer cans) a Renault Dauphin. Indy racing now, zzzzzzzzzzzzz.

The milk was basically product placement from way back in the day.
IndyCar is the most entertaining major series in auto racing. Not the cutting edge tech of F1 but super competitive racing on street, road and oval courses with immensely talented international drivers. The series has much expanded tv coverage around the world, people are watching all over.
A very good race today with a well-known and popular winner. Just about as big a winner is Roger Penske who bought the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the IndyCar series only to have Covid pop up last year and ruin everything. After today, good for Helio, good for Roger, good for IndyCar and good for us. :-)

#4 - I completely understand. And today's motorsports are different by design. Customers today have less and less "motorhead" about them. Computers design unimaginative cars. Between the multiple computers, sketchy electronics, proprietary nonsense and waste disposal inconveniences around cars today, much is DIY unserviceable or not worth the effort. When's the last time you changed your own oil? When I can pay $20 for a change with filter...why would I? Don't dare flush and fill your cooling system!
The racing game today is entertainment, which the purveyors believe comes in close racing and finishes by sponsor-promoted drivers. Used to be the 500 winner's advantage was measured in minutes. Now it is common for the difference to be split seconds. Like it or not, that's the way it is these days. Compared to the old days, speeds are way up. This year's was a new record, 190 mph.

Must be the year for "old timers"...Brady, Phil and now Helio, 46 years old. He is indeed one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. He is ever accommodating to fans, ever smiling in photos with them, and a fine representative of his sport. A nice comeback for a fellow whose career was on the downslide out of Indycar racing. Take that, Captain!
