Is the Ammo Shortage Over?

There was a prolonged ammunition shortage during the Obama administration. I got through that one because a Power Line reader lined me up with a dealer in West Virginia who seemed to have an endless supply of 9 mm. and .22LR rounds. Over the last year, another ammo shortage has struck, caused in part by an influx of new gun buyers who are responding to rising crime rates, attacks on law enforcement, and the election of Joe Biden. As with most shortages, it has been accentuated by hoarding: whenever a shooter saw boxes of a popular caliber on the shelves, he would buy them all.
For quite a while

If the ammo shortage is over, please tell me where it isn't.

Not here in KC area it isn't. Literally zero .380 to be found in stores. Some 9mm, none of the good self defense ammo, just basic practice ammo. A bit of off brand .45 seen, too. No .38 Special seen in a year.

As stated above, I have not seen 38s in months.

I was able to buy small pistol primers last week for the first time in more than a year. My biggest problem is finding shotgun shells for trapshooting. I reload most everything else
If you want to be immune from this type of thing, learn to reload your own.

Midway USA is one of the largest online gun equipment and ammunition suppliers. The currently list 110 SKUs for ".38 Special ammunition". NONE are in stock, none can be backordered.
They list 68 SKUs for ".380 ACP ammunition". NONE are in stock, none can be backordered.
They list 209 SKUs for "9mm Luger ammunition". Six are in stock, and the cost runs from 68 cents to $2.14 cents per cartridge. Typical cost 18 months ago ran from 26 cents to $1.25 for the most expensive 'high tech' self defense ammo.
I don't think the ammo shortage is even remotely over.

And Midway has 112 SKUs for .40 S&W ammunition. None in stock.

"[A] sign that better times are on the way." A bit ironic; if truly better times were on the horizon, we wouldn't be so focused on self-defense.

#4, in order to reload you need primers. Those are harder to find than ammo! Winchester reps are telling retailers it might be 2 years before primers are available again to the consumer because all primers being produced are going into making ammo.

Yes, #8, when ammo is in short supply, the 'long pole in the tent'...i.e. most difficult production line to scale up is primers. So 100% going to in-house needs, none shipped as separate product.
And 'secondary' calibers are apparently not being run at all. Seems like .380 and .38 are not actually in production now, all machinery going to 9mm and .45, perhaps some .40. Rifle sized seems to be all .223 and .308, trickles of that appearing at double and triple normal prices.

The Remington ammunition coming back on line will help greatly.

I picked up a Winchester model 94. Can’t find 30-30 anywhere.
Most of the time when ammo is scarce, ammoseek.com will have something.
Prices are sky high.

Yes, prices are up and number of boxes may be limited in certain stores but you can get nearly every caliber now. Online shopping saves a lot of phone calls and driving. Thousand-round boxes put a burden on the FedEx driver but hey, that's what they get paid for.

I might not be in such good shape if I hadn't stocked up during the Obama years. He turned out to not be stupid enough to test us but Biden and HoHo certainly are.

I have a sufficient stash for most emergencies, but none for plinking. I've seen more on the shelves lately but prices are still way too high. $2.50 per shot for .308 fmj, and believe it or not I saw some specialty 12 ga for $60 for five shells.
Not ready to buy yet.

Have some 50 year old ammo. Thought about throwing it away until I saw what new stuff costs. The price back the was a buck for a box of 50 22 LR. Bought 38 Special last week. Over priced by available. One week deliverable by UPS. If the government wants to disarm the public they don't have to seize guns. Just make ammo unavailable.

Best place to search for ammunition on-line: https://ammoseek.com/
I was in Bass Pro recently and discovered that theft has been so bad that they've had to lock it up in the back. Used to be openly on the shelves, when they had any that is.
