Kroger has criticized Seattle's city's hazard pay law that requires grocers to temporarily pay workers an additional $4 per hour, saying the mandate is forcing the company to close two QFC stores in the city. The QFC stores will remain operational until April 24, QFC said Friday in an emailed statement to Insider. The company said that it will help workers with the transition and consider any transfer requests. "City officials need to consider that grocery stores— in a pandemic— operate on razor-thin profit margins," Kroger said in a statement. "The mandated extra pay makes it impossible to continue operating

And if the minimum goes up to $15 an hour what should the minimum for Social Security recipients be?
At least double the current rate?

When Kroger closes these stores, then the libs will complain about food inequity and the inability for the poor and down trodden to have access to healthy foods (because Whole Foods and Trader Joe's won't open a store that might get looted/burned or both). Soon we will have state run Soviet grocery stores for us and exclusive boutique delivery stores for them.

Liberals never follow their demands to their logical conclusion. They want what they want now, like children, and never look at the outcome. And they seem unable to take responsibility for any problems they have created, nor do they care about the lost jobs as a result of these stores closing. Idiots

Seattle has let antifa, blm and the homeless ruin the Capital Hill area and other neighborhoods. I was at a brand new house kitty corner to a small residential park in the Capital Hill area and the park was wall-to-wall tents. The only upside was the city had a porta potty and garbage bin (that was overflowing with trash). Where do you think these folks hang out when they need to steal something or go to get warm and dry when it is raining. They should open up the shelters. Some businesses are now vacant others have their windows boarded up still, because protesting/rioting/looting can start up at any time. Anyone arrested is back on the street immediately.

Calling all you brave public school teachers hiding at home... suggest you each sponsor a grocery store employee and donate some of the salary you are not earning to the people who ARE working... you know, the one who have been getting you YOUR FOOD!

Just grocery workers? Something seem illegal here. What about others who worked through the year to pay their bills?

In response to the Seattle store closings, Seattle City Council President M. Lorena González said,
"Kroger's bullying tactics will not work because the people of Seattle stand in solidarity with our frontline workers."
Huh? This is no longer a negotiation with Kroger. They are shutting down, you dolt.
You socialists can force a store to shut down, but you cannot force a store to stay open.

I wonder how the employees feel going from $20 an hour and full benefits to hazard pay of $0 an hour and no benefits.

#4 that has been my question all along. What is the minimum "wage" for seniors?? $15/hr would triple what I currently get after working from the age of 16 to 50.

Yep, but think about it. Their unemployed former employees "could be" making 15 bucks an hour.
Hey "former employees" go to Kroger's and see how much food they'll sell you on credit.

Both Seattle and Long Beach, CA should have seen this coming.
Why should a City force a private business to help only one type of employee?
Why not offer a City Tax cut to all at-hazard workers in that city instead?
At least then the city, itself would be bearing the brunt of any financial burden to their own leaders' ideas.

Hazard pay? What for? Stocking shelves? Or, is it hazard pay for being attacked by antifa and blm?

If $15 an hour is a good minimum wage, why not make it $50 or even $100 per hour. Think of the huge windfall in increased income tax receipts..

Seattle's "solidarity with our frontline workers" won't make a dent in the realities of economics. It sounds as though those two stores were on life support to begin with, and this was just to much.

Two long time friends formerly worked in the grocery business, one was the owner's son, managed the store as an adult.
They both tell me that the profit margins of grocery stores are razor thin. If everything is working right, about 4% profit. I can tell you from managing engineering projects for several major companies, when we are planning to do something, of the profit margin is going to be below 15%, we ditch the project, just will not do it. And yet, when a grocery store is doing everything right, they can expect about 1/4th the profit margin.
ANYTHING mandated by fools on the outside that increases costs will instantly wipe out their slim profit, and the best choice at that point is to immediately close. Every day you stay open after the higher costs are mandated is just more money lost.
And, of course, leftists know none of this, and don't even understand it if you try to explain it. They think profits are bad.

The government can force companies to increase their pay, for some reason, but they can't force them to stay open. Politicians are such experts at running businesses, I guess.
