SEATTLE — A series of strident new protests over police misconduct rattled cities across the country over the weekend, creating a new dilemma for state and local leaders who had succeeded in easing some of the turbulence in their streets until a showdown over the use of federal agents in Oregon stirred fresh outrage. (Snip) The latest catalyst was the deployment of federal law enforcement agents in Portland, Ore., whose militarized efforts to subdue protests around the federal courthouse have sparked mass demonstrations and nightly clashes there. In video posted on Facebook you can see dozens of teenagers throwing objects at employees, spitting on people, and destroying property. Memphis police were also called to the scene. Investigators say the business reported parents were dropping off kids in the parking lot until there were more than 300 people at the business. After someone threw a firework in the crowd and caused a stampede, the business decided to close without issuing refunds.

A church volunteer was charged Sunday after he admitted to an arson attack on a 15th-century medieval cathedral in Nantes, France that left the building’s interior badly damaged. The July 18 blaze destroyed the chruch’s prized organ, which dated back to the 1600s, shattered stained-glass windows, and scorched the insides of the Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul. However, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within a matter of hours and prevent serious damage to the building’s structure.(Snip)
According to the Nantes prosecutor, the man, a 39-year-old Rwandan refugee, said he set three fires in the church but did not reveal a motive.

Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf warned against a "dangerous" trend of demonizing law enforcement across the country. As federal officers have clashed with protesters amid violent unrest in Portland over the past few weeks, Wolf said Sunday that there's been an inaccurate description of what agents are doing to control the situation and that calling the demonstrations "peaceful" is misleading. On Thursday, a woman enraged by a young couple enjoying a picnic in a dog park in San Diego while not wearing masks reportedly maced the couple.
Ash O’Brien, her husband Jarrett Kelley and their three-month-old puppy were enjoying the sun in Rhodes Dog Park when a woman in a black face mask targeted the couple with pepper spray, prompting Kelley, who was temporarily blinded, to attempt to grab the canister from the irate woman, who was accompanied by her dog.

There is a new thing starting to happen in some places around the country: “Pandemic pods,” which are formed by families who can afford it, team up and pay for a teacher to come instruct their children. For some of the parents, the instruction represents tutoring for material that students get at school. For others, it is a substitute. Some call it “micro schooling,” as did one educator on Facebook who wrote: “I’ve been hired as a white educator to teach a group of 5 white second graders (formerly in public schools) for the upcoming school year in a micro school setting.

Nearly every day there’s another story about a fight breaking out over the wearing of masks.
Just a couple days ago, a Starbucks barista in California was allegedly punched in the face for asking the customer to put a mask on. And a couple weeks ago, a New York man allegedly assaulted a manager and bartender after being asked to put on a face mask to comply with their COVID-19 safety protocols.
The confrontations have turned deadly. A security guard at a Family Dollar store in Michigan was shot dead in May after he told a customer to wear a mask.

The dramatic increase of COVID-19 cases in the states of Texas, Florida, Arizona, and California this summer has many scratching their heads. The summer months were supposed to slow infections due to activities taking place outdoors and more in-home ventilation, such as windows being opened up. This hypothesis has thus far proved true in many northern states — most dramatically New York — while the South has fared much worse.
There are a few possible explanations for the South’s infection spike.
The first is that a widespread lack of mask-wearing is causing these increases. The national media have been quick to note that Republican governors such as Greg Abbott and Ron DeSantis

Olivia de Havilland, classic star of Hollywood and two-time winner of the Academy Award for Best Actress, died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Paris, France on Saturday. She was 104.
De Havilland built her legacy — one of strong, beguiling characters in difficult circumstances — with her own hands. She rose to prominence in the 1930s as Errol Flynn’s imperiled lass in a series of swashbuckling adventure films like Captain Blood and The Adventures of Robin Hood. Several American universities are expanding the scope of their science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in an attempt to circumvent U.S. immigration law, which allows international students who major in STEM subjects to stay in the country two years longer than counterparts who major in the humanities. New York University, for example, now includes journalism, classics, and drama therapy under its STEM umbrella.
NYU is one of a number of universities exploiting a U.S. immigration policy that requires most international students to leave the country a year after finishing their studies—but permits those who studied STEM disciplines to work for an additional two years.

The English department at a public university declared that proper English grammar is racist.
Rutgers University's English department will change its standards of English instruction in an effort to "stand with and respond" to the Black Lives Matter movement. In an email written by department chairwoman Rebecca Walkowitz, the Graduate Writing Program will emphasize "social justice" and "critical grammar."
Walkowitz said the department would respond to recent events with "workshops on social justice and writing," "increasing focus on graduate student life," and "incorporating ‘critical grammar' into our pedagogy." The "critical grammar" approach challenges the standard academic form of the English language in favor of a more inclusive writing experience.

The schemes have ranged from old fashion ballot box stuffing to absentee and mail-in ballot fraud. Here are a dozen of the more egregious examples.

The Washington press corps seems engaged in a collective demonstration of the legal concept of willful blindness, or deliberately ignoring facts, following the release of yet another declassified document that directly refutes past statements about the Russia collusion investigation. Major media almost entirely swallowed the claim, conspired with its promoters, endlessly and prominently mongered it and has never apologized for so doing.

Hispanic organizers working to elect Joe Biden wrote a “scathing” seven-page letter to the Florida Democrat Party, claiming a “toxic” work culture.
Just 100 days before Election Day, 90 field organizers laid into the party and said the campaign is “suppressing the Hispanic vote” in Central Florida, the Miami Herald reported.
The letter contained eight allegations against the campaign, including, “mistreatment of field organizers, relocating trained staff members without explanation, lack of organizing resources, and taking on volunteers who are then left in limbo.”
The staffers also complained that “the Coordinated Campaign lacks key infrastructure and perpetuates a ‘toxic’ work culture that is hurting morale among on-the-ground staffers,”

Should people be able to invest in ventures that aim to have a social or environmental impact? The answer is yes. In fact, people should be able to invest in, buy stock in, and even bet on anything they want. However, fiduciaries (those that manage other people’s investments) must follow some rules.
The first rule of a fiduciary should be to put the economic interests of its clients first. Some haven’t exactly followed that rule and have let personal politics and beliefs get in the way,

Seattle police declared a riot Saturday following large demonstrations in the city’s Capitol Hill neighborhood and deployed flash bangs and pepper spray to try to clear an area near where weeks earlier people had set up an “occupied protest zone” that stretched for several blocks. Via Twitter, police said they had made more than two dozen arrests for assault on officers, obstruction and failure to disperse.

The NYPD was still searching Saturday night for this man in connection with a brutal restaurant brawl that left “Frasier” star Kelsey Grammer’s actress daughter slashed in the arm and in need of stitches Friday night. The image — showing a bald man in a white T-shirt and shorts — was released by the NYPD. “On Friday, July 24, 2020 at approximately 2328 hours, in front of 60 2nd Ave, a 36-year-old female victim and a 32-year-old male attempted to break up a dispute between the unidentified male and other patrons at the location,”

Joe Biden came out of his hibernation basement and launched a blistering attack on a public figure.
Guess who! Donald Trump? No. Mike Pence? Try again. Mitch McConnell? Not even close. Any other Republican politician? No way. A Democratic office holder, maybe one who is not progressive enough to suit his new-found sharp leftism? Nope.
You had better be sitting down for this one, or you’re going to keel right over. None other than Milton Friedman is Joe Biden’s target.
Here is what the possible next president of these United States has snarked: “When did Milton Friedman die and become king?” Nor was this a one-off;

What accounts for the frenzied shift to hysterical language among leftists when attempting to demean the president every time they open their mouths? That is an easy question; they know that Biden is a pathetic loser and that Trump is going to defeat him handily in November. Sure, the constant din of their hateful slings and arrows may have done some damage, but not nearly enough for him to lose the election, and the Democrats know it. Thus, we hear terms like "storm troopers," "militia," "private troops," and other nonsensical language to describe Trump's light-touch attempts at rescuing those Democrat-run cities

Congressional Republicans and the Trump administration have spent the past few months putting off another round of coronavirus relief. Watching and waiting made some sense, given the fluidity of our condition, but it now leaves them with little time to reach a common position and then negotiate an acceptable outcome with the Democrats.
Senate Republicans have made a good start by ditching two bad ideas. One is President Trump’s demand for a big reduction in the payroll tax. Under the right circumstances, cutting that tax would be a very good idea. It does not, however, fit the needs of the moment very well. The millions who are out of work

President Donald Trump loves branding his opponents. Boy, do I have the brand for Joe Biden. Other than "Basement Biden." Or Biden is the leader of the "Dementia-crats." Those are effective and memorable, too.
But nothing beats this little ditty: Biden stands for "Biggest Idiot Democrats Ever Nominated."
Forget Biden's nonstop stumbling and bumbling. Forget that he appears to not know where he is (he talked about Vermont but was in New Hampshire), what day it is (remember "Super Thursday"?), what year it is (remember in the presidential debate when old Joe said supporters could "go to Joe 30330")

The presidential election result is now down to five questions.
Can the President override the Democratic press’s thunderous campaign to terrorize the country over the coronavirus?
Can the president successfully connect Vice President Biden’s campaign to the hooligans, anti-white racists, and urban guerrillas who effectively are being encouraged by the corrupt Democratic mayors of many of the nation’s largest cities? Will the economic recovery and the decline in the unemployment generated by the COVID-19 shutdown continue at its recent pace and strengthen the economy as a pro-Trump electoral argument?
Will the Republicans make adequately clear to the country the authoritarian and Marxist implications

During the debate over the First Step Act, conservatives favoring lenient treatment for felons liked to point to Texas where, supposedly, enlightened programs were rehabilitating criminals with remarkable success. These “evidence-based” programs were cited to justify shorter sentences for, and the early release of, federal felons who took various courses while incarcerated. The usually sensible Sen. John Cornyn helped lead this charge, as did Heritage Foundation.
No disrespect to Texas, but in fact it has not succeeded where reformers dating back to the time of Jeremy Bentham failed. Properly analyzed, the statistics don’t demonstrate substantial success for its “evidence-based” rehabilitation programs.

The Washington press corps seems engaged in a collective demonstration of the legal concept of willful blindness, or deliberately ignoring facts, following the release of yet another declassified document that directly refutes past statements about the Russia collusion investigation. The document shows the FBI used a security briefing of then candidate Donald Trump and top aides to gather possible evidence for Crossfire Hurricane, its code name for the Russia investigation.
What is astonishing is that the media has refused to see what should be one of the biggest stories in decades. The Obama administration targeted the campaign of the opposing party based on false evidence.

The Washington Nationals and the New York Yankees put up some monster TV ratings when they opened the season Thursday night. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the opening game between the Yankees and Nationals was watched by four million people on ESPN, which is the most watched opener in the history of baseball. It was also the most watched regular season game since 2011. The game was eventually rained out. (Photo) So, do we think people missed sports or do we think people missed sports? It would seem like the answer is a firm yes. I’m not even a gigantic baseball fan, and I was

CBS News decided to test the system upon which the government will entrust the sanctity of the ballot this November. And the U.S. Postal Service flubbed it.
This is not about gaming the system, or voter fraud, or stuffing the mail with fake ballots from illegal aliens. This is about the competency of the USPS to deliver official ballots sent through the mail on time, and to the right people. They proved that the 100 million or more Americans who plan to mail in their ballots should not expect their vote to be counted unless they mail it weeks prior to the election deadlines in each state.

Solving America’s race-related problems is hard. So hard that nobody really has any clue how to do it. Burning down an auto-parts store isn’t going to help. But forcing people to attend reeducation seminars also seems unlikely to work.
Just as we spend more time watching TV than training for marathons, we lapse into doing what’s easy. And what’s easy, when it comes to race, is pretending to be outraged about commonly used words. Trying desperately not to get canceled, bosses are trying to think ahead about what words might create a fake Duraflame firestorm of anger, and preemptively ruling ordinary words out of bounds.

“Cancel culture” is a double entendre of the dangerous kind. It is not just about canceling individuals or entities who offend leftist activists and their myopic group of minions, it is about fundamentally canceling America.
The rabid left is actively rewriting American history as being inherently bad from the start, as it has no excuse to change our culture if there is anything arguably good about it. Therefore, our values, historical narrative, monuments and anything that makes us uniquely American must be disparaged and destroyed. Tyrants throughout history have practiced cancel culture by forcibly suppressing opposition to their authoritarianism with methods similar to what the American left is using today.

We’ve spent plenty of time over the past month or two looking at the seemingly endless series of riots consuming many of the nation’s larger cities. While the violence, injuries, assaults and even deaths capture many of the headlines, the staggering amount of property damage taking place is also a part of the equation. The question is, what do these cities do in the aftermath when downtown storefront windows have all been replaced with graffiti-covered plywood sheets, walls and roads are festooned with paint and lights, statues and other public property has been destroyed? That’s a problem that the City of Denver

"Taking steps to prevent their introduction is the most effective method of reducing both the risk of invasive species infestations and the cost to controll

One of the reasons Democrats went with Joe Biden is because they really want to win back Pennsylvania in November. Some polls show Biden having a slight lead over Trump in the state, but there are plenty of voters there, many of them Democrats, who know deep down that Biden and the Democrats will be bad news for jobs, especially in the energy sector. Trump has been great for the people of Pennsylvania and they know this.

Denis Diderot, model of the French Enlightenment that he was, gave memorable expression to that movement’s inveterate anti-clericalism. “Man will never be free,” said the energetic Encyclopédiste, “until the last king is strangled with the entrails of the last priest.”They don’t talk much about kings and priests, but the civilization-hating anarchists of the Black Lives Matter movement would applaud Diderot’s sentiments. Although they sometimes wrap their destructive actions in fine-sounding rhetoric about justice and anti-racism, what they are really about is hate. The stark reality of what a Biden puppet presidency would mean has come into view. It is, to say the least, absolutely terrifying.
But questions remain about whether he'll even be the nominee, and if so, if he'll make it to Election Day in this role.
First, can anyone imagine Biden debating Trump? I can't.
The left is already scrambling to figure out how to leverage the situation to get Biden out of this commitment, such as demanding Trump release his tax returns in exchange for Biden's participation in the debates. No doubt more schemes will emerge in the coming weeks.
