Congressional Republicans and the Trump administration have spent the past few months putting off another round of coronavirus relief. Watching and waiting made some sense, given the fluidity of our condition, but it now leaves them with little time to reach a common position and then negotiate an acceptable outcome with the Democrats.
Senate Republicans have made a good start by ditching two bad ideas. One is President Trump’s demand for a big reduction in the payroll tax. Under the right circumstances, cutting that tax would be a very good idea. It does not, however, fit the needs of the moment very well. The millions who are out of work

The expected wrong-headed advice from National Review is something you can count on. End the lockdowns and stop the unemployment bonus. Millions of people are out of work because they choose the higher-paying option, which is to sit home. School teachers are the worst of the lot, full pay for doing nothing and forcing working families to pay outrageous child care fees while paying full taxes to support idle teachers. Help Wanted signs are as numerous as Trump/Pence posters around here. No, there is no good reason to increase the deficit. We are already in a shaky position, just like a person who can not control credit card use even when collection calls are coming in daily. A cut in payroll tax is ALWAYS a wise move as it benefits those who directly fund the country.

Absolutely #1. Just open up the lock downed economy and get back to work. Then people can take care of themselves. If NY wants to do something useful they can quit shoving Covid 19 patients into nursing homes.

1. Blame the current administration for sins and failures of past administrations. Check.
2. Call everything ever done by any Democrat at anytime a great idea. Check.
3. If a Republican is complimented, be sure to damn that with faint praise. Check.
4. Never fund anyone who was terminated during COVID-19. They might be a Republican. Check.
5. Remember, our advice is primary AND immutable. Check.
NRO in a nutshell.

I never want to see the phrase 'fiscal responsibility" linked with "Republican" ever again. It's as big a falsehood as any Dr. Fauci is accused of. Somehow they help find those profligate Democrats find and spend TRILLIONS that don't exist.

The Covid Relief Bill is just more income redistribution, and in amounts the Democrats could never have achieved. The Republicans have ran up bigger deficits, bigger income redistribution, socialize more segments of the economy with emergency powers, than any Democrat president could ever have done. The Republicans are not the party of small government, balanced budgets, or the preservation of liberty and property. I agree the economy should immediately be re-opened everywhere at 100%, but then I never agreed with shutting any of it down.

Open everything up and do away with the minimum wage and let employers pay people in cash with no Federal Tax with holdings or filings. Kind of like illegal aliens who have an unfair advantage over Americans just from getting paid in cash, under the table.

States elect their own dedicated leadership. Some states elect leaders able to demonstrate fiscal responsibility and control. Other states have leaders who feel it gets their party elected by massive handouts to unions, accommodation to rioters, and the mass release of prisoners that result in destruction of property and murder. It is not the responsibility of citizens in responsibly-run states to fund the liberal activism of states that allow their socialist policies to place them in debt to the point that they can never recover. I do remember when National Review was worth reading, and I subscribed to it decades ago. What they publish today is pretty stupid.

The Trump tax cuts of 2017 expire in June 2025. What do you think will happen if a Crat is in the WH then? The GOP should be vehemently pushing to make those tax cuts permanent. The republicans had all the power in 2017 and should never have included an expiration date. What were they thinking?? Declare the pandemic over and everyone go back yo work. Nothing else will improve the economy.

What to leave out IMHO?
1) Block grant payments to states: unless there is oversight, accountability and someone checking to make sure the money goes where it is supposed to or returned immediately. The money could be used to compensate dem run states for shutdown/riot losses that the president has already denied. And, no state loans that everybody knows will not be paid back, either.
2) Payments to any business on a stock exchange here or overseas, any organization - profit or non-profit with branch offices, no government lobbyist firm, no organization - profit or non-profit having over $500K in reserves/ endowments, or owned by China in part or in full or who pays the CEO more than 350K. There was no reason for greedy colleges, Washington DC lobbyists or Planned Parenthood chapters etc. to even be eligible for help from the government when they had more than adequate reserves on hand to cover their so-called losses.
What to put in?
1) Direct payments to those out of work because of COVID shutdowns.
2) Direct payments to school districts needing funds to clean buildings and open safely.
3) Stop paying hospitals extra $$ for COVID deaths.
4) Any aid for testing should go directly to citizens/insurance companies/doctors/hospitals/labs that paid for the test. Not the states.

I see no reason to give $500 extra for kids. Some weren't working anyway. Cutting the $600 extra in unemployment is a good idea. So many restaurant, hotel and theme park employees are young and live with mom. They wouldn't go back to work because they are now making more money. Small businesses are hurting and many have gone out of business for good. The money going to colleges and big corporations was a mistake.
