Hulu has removed an episode of The Golden Girls that contains a blackface reference. Over the weekend, the streaming platform cleared its catalog of the 1988 episode of the beloved sitcom titled "Mixed Blessings." The season 3 episode's storyline follows Dorothy's son Michael introducing his fiancée Lorraine to the main characters. If I were black, I’d be so embarrassed about what is going on. Every bit of this pandering would make me feel that I was too different from everyone else. So much so that I had to be protected. This will not foster good feelings toward blacks.

I've seen the episode and the whole point of the joke is that blackface is wrong. Bea Arthur's son announces his engagement and brings the new in laws over, neglecting to mention they're black. Meanwhile, Betty White and Rue McClanahan walk in wearing brown mud masks, looking like blackface. When Betty White, the ditz, sees their shocked expression, she thinks that the in-laws think she's actually black and tries explaining it's just a mask and she's really Swedish. If anything, the racier jokes are when Estelle Getty asks if black men are well endowed and Bea Arthur afraid her grandson will be named Lamar.

This demonstrates how stupid people have become. Hulu reads this episode at a literal level and not as it is intended to be read. If anything, it is a very anti-bigoted, pro-minority episode. And it shows characters grappling with real thoughts and issues of that day (in 1988). Strangely enough, those issues are still hanging around and have only gotten worse in many respects. Blessed is the time when we get along AND we can laugh at ourselves with others AND we treat all people according to the Golden Rule. Frankly, the Golden Girls is a sitcom that endeavors to live by the Golden Rule in every episode. You may not like how it tries to do it. But the effort is there. And it's so bloody hilarious!

#7 It was just Susanne that put on the dark makeup. The other ladies were aghast and of course that was why it was so hilarious. Susanne (Delta Burke, Miss Florida 1974) was always my favorite. Her relationship with Anthony and her maid Consuela and her big mouth, no way Designing Women could be done now. Snowflakes would melt. I miss the times when nighttime TV was still funny, family friendly, and entertaining. And they used the platform for good.

This story is from the weekend, but I wanted to circle back to it as it seems to be emblematic of what’s going on in New York City these days in terms of the ability of the police to maintain order in the Big Apple. Early Sunday morning, the police were dispatched to a scene were gunfire was reported. Upon arriving at the Harlem neighborhood where the report originated, they were greeted by the sight of hundreds of people having some sort of party in the streets. But rather than helping the officers look for any possible shooter in the

Months into a pandemic that has caused more than 500,000 deaths worldwide, scientists are still trying to answer crucial questions about the coronavirus. Chief among them: everything about asymptomatic patients. People who contracted COVID-19 but didn't get sick and had no symptoms have been one of the most confounding factors of the public health emergency. The United States has more than 2.5 million confirmed coronavirus cases, but it's likely that many asymptomatic people have fallen through the cracks of official counts. Now, scientists say that without a better understanding of how many people have been asymptomatically infected, it's difficult to
