CHARLESTON, South Carolina — The Palmetto State was never going to be a strong suit for Pete Buttigieg, who has been criticized for his record on race as mayor of South Bend, Indiana, making the Democratic primary tougher in a state where the Democratic electorate is 60% African American. And appealing to union members here has its challenges, as well, since several of his competitors have long-standing relationships with unions. President Trump’s popularity is higher than before the Democrats' impeachment debacle began, and that continues to frustrate and outrage the leftists in our midst. Like Wile E. Coyote learns over-and-over again, no matter what he does, the Roadrunner just keeps tweeting on down the road at record speed. They’ve worked to impeach Trump since he took office and finally achieved it, only to have him exonerated by the Senate. They’ve mocked him, his tweets, and his priorities. They’ve drowned him in negative media coverage. They’ve called him a narcissist, a tyrant, and an uncaring fraud.

It’s unfortunate that live coverage of President Trump receiving what AP calls “adulation from a massive, colorful crowd” of 125,000 took place during the wee hours of the morning for most Americans. But the consequences of his roughly 36 hours in India will be long lasting and important. (snip) With Trump triumphing so visibly, the Trump-hating media are reduced to utterly petty snark, such as this pathetic tweet from CNN: The President, whose diet is often a rotation of steaks, burgers and meatloaf, faces a potential shock as he prepares to travel to three Indian cities this week.

While Michael Bloomberg's Nevada debate performance was justly and widely panned, he attacked Bernie Sanders effectively, demonstrating he's probably the only candidate who can derail the Vermont senator's nomination. By the same token, Sanders can wreck Bloomberg's hopes by mobilizing his own base against the billionaire at the convention or even running as an independent candidate. Each man has the ability to take the other one down, and that dynamic is the key to who eventually wins the nomination. (snip) There is a real possibility that these two will knock each other out, leaving the door open for the compromise candidate closest to being a semi-normal human.

The Trump administration today is reinstating a Clinton-era welfare reform rule -- once widely embraced by top Democrats in Congress -- requiring immigrants to be self-sufficient, a move that could end up to $3 billion in federal and state welfare payments to them. After receiving a blessing from the Supreme Court Friday, the so-called “Public Charge Grounds Final Rule” kicked in nationally, essentially forcing immigrants to prove that they won’t become a burden on taxpayers.

In 2018, California implemented the California Values Act, which gave special protection to illegal aliens by mandating that California law enforcement agencies cannot cooperate with federal immigration authorities. Last week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) thumbed its nose at California and arrested two people in Sonoma County Superior Court. California has lots of reasons to hang onto its roughly 2.2 – 3.5 million illegal immigrants. They provide cheap, easily-exploited labor. They swell the state’s population, which matters for electors and congresspeople, as well as the distribution of certain federal funds. As illegal immigrants are fed into the system, they provide reliable (legal or illegal) Democrat votes.

Yet his opposition to the Iraq War was dictated not by cool-headed geopolitical calculations, but the lifelong habit of romancing American enemies — as is typical for communism-lovers. The recently surfaced press conference Sanders gave following his return from his honeymoon in Yaroslavl, USSR, is a great example of leftist naïveté about totalitarian regimes. That is not because he has a “very good chance of exoneration,” as President Trump himself predicted. Stone has about the same chance of exoneration as he does of canonization. Rather, it is not clear that Stone received a fair trial due to alleged juror bias or, even if his trial is now finished, whether it will become undone by a presidential pardon. If nothing else, one thing should be clear. Stone holds a far greater claim to a new trial than to a presidential pardon.
