NEW YORK — Billionaire and presidential candidate Tom Steyer reiterated his support Wednesday for reparations for African-Americans suffering from the legacy of slavery. “We would retell the story over the last 401 years so everybody understands not just the legalized, institutionalized injustice in racism — which is definitely a huge part of this story — but also the contribution of the African-American community,” Steyer said in an interview with Yahoo News’ “Hot Mic With Brittany Shepherd.” “I don’t think we can be the country that we want to be until we acknowledge the past and move to accept the mistakes

I have never owned a slave. I am not responsible for anything I didn't do. Consequently I don't owe anyone anything for slavery. Steyer wants to give his money away let him. But keep your hands out of my pocket.

Yes, sir, if I were Steyer, I would put tens of millions of dollars into ads telling white working people that you are going to take their hard earned money and send it to the hood.

Do defendants of Black Americans who owned slaves owe the money or get the money? I'm confused on that point... I'm guessing Steyer is as well. None of Obama's ancestors were slaves, but his Kenyan ancestors owned slaves, is he part of the give or the take in this little scheme? Humm....

Pay them reparations for their slave legacy and 10 years from now they will be demanding a second payment for the legacy.
One thing that is cultural with the generation we have now is that they never stop their demands.

No person alive ever was a slave.
No person alive ever owned a slave.
No person alive even KNEW a slave, almost certainly.
This is OVER. Totally, entirely, fundamentally OVER. We had a huge war which was partially about that topic.
DONE.

So, tell us how it will be administered.
e.g. Barak Obama was half black, but his ancestors never experienced US Slavery – he gets nothing.
His wife can probably trace her self back to owners. She gets a share.
His daughters get a half share.
Now if you are to get reparations you have to prove that you are:
1.) All black, traceable to slaves, with no white blood.
2.) No Native American – First Nation blood.
3.) No later entry after 1865 black from Africa, Brazil, or any of the islands.
4.) Can you prove your lineage? Can’t tell who your father is/was ? Thanks for playing, but no.
5.) Will the terms Mulatto, Octaroon, and Quadroon come back into fashion?
6.) Who gets to decide? And is this a one off, never to be mentioned again deal?

Believe reparations should be paid, if ever, by the Democrats, but if Steyer wants to foot the bill, let him go for it.

My family lines came as early as the 1600s and as late as just before the American Revolution, so we were here during slavery and a few of our family lines did own slaves. I apologize to no one, although I do believe that slavery itself is an evil concept. Nevertheless, I owe nothing to anyone regarding this or regarding my ancestors who fought (and at least two died) in service to their Southern states, and I honor their memory and service (but not their politics) as a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. (We are not a political group and do not use the Confederate battle flag in our meetings. Most of our projects involve current veterans and current servicemen.) If I were descendants of Union soldiers, as many of my fellow L-dotters are, I would be doubly furious at the asinine idea of reparations.
How many times do we have to say that the Great Society programs were---and are---reparations? In multiple ways, we pay every day for our importation of slave labor so long ago.

There were slaves here when Europeans first arrived. Indians had them. There were slaves in South America and Canada and Europe and the middle east. Most importantly, there were slaves in Africa and there still is. So tell me why people who have lived free in this country for 150 years should get one red cent? Besides, my family didn't make it here til the very early 1900's. Reparations is just a hot button topic people like to throw out there for no reason unless they are trying to get elected to something.

If he thinks this is so important, he can pay it with his own money. He's rich and can afford it.
Nobody is stopping him.

Shameless pandering. He knows It will never happen. Giving away other people's money with full knowledge that he will never be required to do so costs him nothing. And he gets a few votes from blacks who buy it. Sukkahs.

I'm all for finding living people who were slave owners in 1860 and making them pay living people who were slaves in 1860.

I agree with Steyer. Everyone who actually owned slaves must pay reparations to anyone who was a slave...oh, wait...
