Alberta is often referred to as Canada’s Texas because of its cowboy culture and rich oil deposits. These are extracted from the tar sands near the city of Fort McMurray to the tune of about 3.5 million barrels a day. If the province were a country, it would be the fifth largest oil producing nation on earth, with room to grow. It has the “third largest proven oil reserve” on the planet with the capacity to fill 170 billion more barrels at least, reports National Geographic.
By Canadian standards, Albertans are conservative citizens with a libertarian glint in their eye. By American standards, they’re moderates.

What a great idea. Alberta has pulled it work force from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Would love to see my relatives become Americans.
We could hear the music of Stan Rogers again and vacation in Calgary. Maybe we could buy some of the Yukon and British Columbia territory to make a short cut to Alaska.
With all the oil revenues we could even make another try to buy Greenland.

Does anyone think the Queen (or her "regent" Charles) would approve this? Or, the Canadian government? Even Albertans? Talk about harebrained meddling in a foreign country's affairs. Let's buy Greenland instead.

Trade our Northeast for their Northwest?
Of course, nobody wants New Jersey. [Gratuitous joke - I was born and raised there.]
Just sayin'.

I am an Albertan by birth and have been (legally) in Texas for 29 years now. After much experience with Canadian politics, if Alberta wants statehood and I get to vote it will be a yes. My family up there would also vote yes. Alberta is Texas with (too much) snow.

I spent some time in Alberta a few years ago, working on an engineering project. Interesting place, nice folks.
Back in the 90s I was on an international computer graphics standards committee, and we had a Canadian member and we spent a few evenings together, dinner and such. I remember being a bit surprised when he opined that "one day, I think Canada will become a part of the USA". He was an educated man, and engineer and a thinker. That was the first time I heard this concept raised.
MAYBE Alberta, but PLEASE never even consider the pukes in Quebec and much of SE Canada. And remember, they tend to be way left of the average American, politically.

#3, there's no pay wall at AS, but there is a free article limit. You've probably reached it. Change browsers or clear cookies and you won't have a problem. In the meantime, try this url to read the article:

Commented before I got past the pay wall. Alberta is a bit unique because in Canada ALL natural resources (like oil) are provincial. The federal government has no claim to oil revenues at all. They can place excise taxes on retail things like gasoline but they gain nothing from crude oil revenue. This pi$$e$ them off royally (pun intended). If Alberta became a US state their oil would be federally controlled. They would be better off as a separate country, having trade agreements with the USA.

I spent many years visiting/working in Alberta....my
limited "survey" of all the people I worked with was
100% in favor of being part of the US. They love Canada
but not the Canadian govt. And it's only gotten worse since
then. I was flying back to Denver from Calgary one day and
a deadheading Air Canada pilot schooled me on all the reasons
why we should allow Alberta to join the US. He closed with...
"besides...you're better armed!"

#10, only if the land is public land. They need to have companies or individuals take title to the land, and thereby own the mineral rights before any "join the USA" moves are made.
Feds only own resources on Fed land, which in the west of the USA is a LOT of land. But on private land, unless the mineral rights have been sold off previously (they can be sold separately from the land, oddly) the rights to all "minerals" (oil, gas, gold, silver, iron, etc) are owned by the land owner.

Spent a lot of time in Ontario and Quebec and came to this conclusion, Canadians don't hate their government, they hate the Québécois who micromanage everything. If only those Quebeckers would make good on their occasional threat to break away from Canada, it would leave the rest of the country to be happy and productive.

If Alberta were to become a US state, adjustments to the 435 limit on House seats would need to be made so as not to diminish representation for existing states. The Senate would be OK since each state is allotted 2 senators.

#13 There were 2 two referendi about Quebec seceding. The last was 49.7% in favor. The standing joke in Canada at the time was if they had held the vote in the other nine provinces they would have won. They now have the Bloc Quebecouis in Canadian parliament. Hello Justin True Dough.
