Mayor Lori Lightfoot will propose a tax hike on all food and drinks sold in Chicago restaurants to help shrink a massive estimated $838 million shortfall in the 2020 budget. The proposal would double the current .25% tax on food and drinks sold at retail establishments and restaurants, the mayor’s office said. Aldermen will need to approve the increase, which would kick in Jan. 1. (Snip) The tax Lightfoot wants to raise is but a fraction of the levy Chicago diners pay every time they eat out. The sales tax in Chicago is 10.25 percent, one of the highest in

Probably a drop in the bucket if you consider that the striking teachers want an additional 2 1/2 BILLION a year spent of them.

Leftists LOVE doubling taxes. And they always need more OPM.
MORE OPM! It is their mantra.
I avoid Chicago, SanFran and NYC as much as possible. Horrible places with a few things worth visiting. I have pretty much exhausted the things worth seeing in each, thank goodness.

FTA: Dating to her campaign for mayor earlier this year, Lightfoot has repeatedly promised to cut expenses wherever she could before seeking to raise politically unpopular taxes.
Noticed there were no cuts in expenses proposed, and I would bet that property taxes are going up.

Here's a counter proposal. For every dollar raised by increasing taxes, spending must be cut 3 dollars. Soon there would be no need for additional taxes.
It worked great for federal regulations.

FTA: The sales tax in Chicago is 10.25 percent, one of the highest in the nation. The current .25 city tax is on top of that, as is a a 1% food and beverage tax for the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority that is levied at downtown restaurants as well as the two airports.
As for that Metro Pier & Expo tax, it extends far beyond "downtown". For those familiar with the city - this tax boundaries are Diversey on the north (Lakeview), the Stevenson Expy on the south and Ashland on the west. This is NOT downtown Chicago but it is for their tax grab purposes.

Another route to kill off the restaurant business in Chicago. How about trimming back city government pensions since that accounts for most of the shortfall. They can’t afford it. And taxing small businesses into bankruptcy is not the solution.

The closest I have gotten to Chicago is O'Hare airport in the 70's. I escaped without injuries.

This should be the Democrat theme song:
Midas Man
Renaissance
Gold - said the man to the many
I want money and I'll make it grow
I will count my worth in gold - wealth untold
I'll sell my soul - Midas Man
Sold - said the man to the many
Work for me, I'll only steal your time
I will count my money out, there's no doubt
I'll sell my soul - Midas Man - Midas Man
[Chorus:]
I'll take from the blind and I'll get up ahead
I'll sneak up behind and I'll steal
I'll take all that you have
And then all that you've concealed
I'll take anything I can get - I'll make you
I'll break you and I'll make you sweat
Nothing is worth nothing unless it's
Made for Midas Man
Gold - said the man to the many
Pots of gold are all I want from you
Quarter time for treble days the only way
To sell your soul - Midas Man - Midas Man
[Chorus]
Midas - Midas - Midas Man

It used to be fun to go into the City and have dinner and a show, or Lunch and shopping at Christmas. Now, even in the Heart of the shopping district it's not safe from the gangs that swarm and grab purses and attack shoppers. Now, they want to go after the "Restaurant Crowd". Go ahead, we'll see how that works out!

glad i found this post!
because..
just ate at Burger Jones for lunch today.. Minneapolis chain, i think..
good burgers.. okay service
bill for 3 was 38 bucks.. so i tipped 20 percent, as usual..
something made me look at the totals since it seemed a bit high..
about normal, i noticed..
except for one thing added on after "tax"..
3% "Wellness Charge"
huh?! never seen that ANYWHERE in the WORLD
when i asked the fat taciturn guy at the checkout about it, he said it
"might go for our health insurance"
and he was outwardly PEEVED i even asked about it..
the young girl server was up there as well, looking a bit anxious..
i just said thanks and left..
one.. i am going to find out who owns these franchises..
two.. i am going to tell them know that i will tell everyone i know to avoid this joint
three.. if i ever DO go there again i will tip TEN percent and CIRCLE the "Wellness Charge"
has any Lcommer seen this before?

Perhaps when Chicago is a dead, decaying city on the lake, then the people of the rest of Illinois can take their state back.

loved going into to Chicago to the 84th floor of the Hancock bldg. for lunch, the day after Thanksgiving. Shopped the mile, did some site seeing. Was awesome. Now, we pack our food, buy gas before Illinois and drive around Chicago. We see the bldgs. from the free way and reminise about the fun times we had downtown Chicago. Keep taxing the joint. Less and less people will visit. I am glad we saw Chicago before it went to far down the drain. Missy Lightfinger can keep the place. Its all hers to ruin

Perhaps the city government should watch the movie “Divergent” to see what their city will look like in a few years.

Is there a Demon-Rat anywhere in this country that has actually taken an Economics 101 class in college?!?!?!?
Tax increases always give you a very short-term increase in tax revenues, followed by a long-term decrease in tax revenues!!!!! Every freakin' time!!!!!
Proof #864,326,994 that you cannot be a lie-beral if you have more than 10 working brain cells. I'm guessing Mayor Lightfoot has about 9 less working brain cells than that!!!
