The Utah Supreme Court has suspended a city judge for making "shirty and politically charged" comments from the bench and posting "indelicate" criticism online about President Donald Trump. Judge Michael Kwan will serve a six-month suspension without pay for repeatedly violating the Utah Code of Judicial Conduct. In his two decades as a Taylorsville Justice Court judge, the Judicial Conduct Commission has issued Kwan two letters of education and two reprimands for various violations. "We note that previous endeavors to help Judge Kwan correct this behavior have not been successful. And we regretfully conclude that a sanction less severe than

Comments:

Footnote 1 to the disciplinary opinion begins, "Judge Kwan contends that this was intended to be funny, not rude. It is an immutable and universal rule that judges are not as funny as they think they are. . . ."

Conceptions of morality change, never more so than in the lifetime of The New Criterion. If a person who died at the time of the first issue were to return to life, he would find himself in an angrier and more charged moral atmosphere than the one he had left—and one in which the principles that undergird Western civilization scarcely seem to be in evidence. Indeed, he would think that the world was a moral hornets’ nest that had been poked with a stick, so furious is the buzzing. Some years ago, I shared a public platform with a person

Most Wednesdays my column appears under the “Opinion” section, because, well, that’s where columns appear. They aren’t news — they’re opinions about the news. That’s an important distinction; one most people with a shred of common sense and a marginal understanding of the First Amendment can comprehend. Regardless of whether they agree with that opinion or not, they understand the difference between point of view and matter of fact. They usually also understand that the humans writing columns for a small-town newspaper CORRECTIONS*

A controversial country concert that was supposed to take place in Kaysville, then in Tooele County, is moving south. Utah Business Revival announced Wednesday that the concert, featuring country singer Collin Raye, is now happening in Cedar City on Saturday, June 13. “As they say, three times a charm, and this concert revival will go on because we don’t quit as Americans!” Eric Moutsos, with UBR, stated in a press release. This change comes after Judge Diana Gibson for the Third District Court upheld an injunction on Friday against the gathering near Grantsville. A controversial country concert that was supposed

When I was little, I loved to sing. At age 5, I joined a nationally renowned youth choir based in Seattle, my hometown. During the wintertime, we performed dozens of Christmas songs, exquisite choral melodies in multipart harmony, in churches across the city. Next to the other choristers, all of us dressed in identical red and white choir robes, I blended right in. Except for one thing: I’m Jewish. While in choir I sang songs about Christmas, I didn’t celebrate it. My family didn’t decorate a tree like our neighbors, and I was under strict instructions not to spill the

Three years ago, the only people who’d ever heard of Pete Buttigieg were likely to be residents of South Bend, Ind., the town of 103,000 people where he served as mayor. South Bend is home to Notre Dame University. It has a bus station with a fleet of 60 buses, a small train station and a small regional airport. So, who better for Team Biden to nominate as secretary of the Department of Transportation, which employs more than 58,000 employees – more than half the population of South Bend – and has a budget of $87 billion?

"Research obtained by a group of scientists shows the COVID vaccine spike protein can travel from the injection site and accumulate in organs and tissues including the spleen, bone marrow, the liver, adrenal glands and in 'quite high concentrations' in the ovaries." This is what Dr. Robert Malone, inventor of the mRNA technology warned about. The spike proteins are not staying at the injection site and they are dangerous. Protein in the blood can be very dangerous. A Canadian cancer vaccine researcher said last week, “We made a big mistake. We didn’t realize it until now,” said Byram Bridle, a viral immunologist and associate professor at University of Guelph, Ontario.

The White House has been consulting with the oil industry to seek a remedy for rising gasoline prices as surging inflation threatens to tarnish the economic recovery, according to three people familiar with the discussions. The latest outreach to the oil industry is an awkward shift for the Biden administration, which has pledged to move the country away from fossil fuels and has drawn criticism from the industry and Republicans for pausing lease sales of federal land for oil and gas development.

Daily cases are down 47%, hospitalizations are down 38% over the past six weeks," Biden said. "Over the past two weeks, most of the country has improved as well. Washington–Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe has won back his full pension as part of a settlement of his lawsuit arising from his firing during the Trump administration more than three years ago, his lawyers announced Thursday. McCabe, a frequent target of then-President Donald Trump’s ire, was fired in March 2018 by then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions after the Justice Department’s inspector general determined he had misled internal investigators about his involvement in a news media leak. The termination came hours before he was to have retired, denying him his pension. McCabe has denied intentionally deceiving anyone, was never criminally charged and blasted his firing as politically motivated.

During the 2020 election, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg spent hundreds of millions of dollars to turn out likely Democratic voters. But this wasn’t traditional political spending. He funded a targeted, private takeover of government election operations by nominally nonpartisan — but demonstrably ideological — nonprofit organizations.Analysis conducted by our team demonstrates this money significantly increased Joe Biden’s vote margin in key swing states. In places like Georgia, when Biden won by 12,000 votes, and Arizona, where he won by 10,000, the spending likely put him over the top.

CNN sounded the alarm Monday over recent campaign blunders made by Democratic Virginia gubernatorial candidate Terry McAuliffe, suggesting his comments could jeopardize his already slim margins in the race against Republican businessman Glenn Youngkin. During a discussion about the race on CNN's "Inside Politics," host John King admitted it was "noteworthy" to see a Democratic candidate playing cleanup so close to the end of the race considering Virginia had been trending more and more towards Democrats. He specifically pointed to comments McAuliffe made about President Joe Biden's downward trending poll numbers and parents not having a say on what their kids learn in school as the reason his edge

Walgreens is shuttering another five of its stores in crime-ridden San Francisco because of rampant shoplifting by thieves who waltz past security guards and sell the items outside the drugstore chain's doors. The national chain has closed 17 of its 70 San Francisco locations in the past two years because of the shelf raiders, who have swiped everything not behind lock and key. Thefts in the chain's 53 remaining stores are five times the average for their stores elsewhere in the country, according to company officials. The number of illegal migrants released into the United States by the Biden administration is staggering. Fox News obtained an exclusive story with documents from the Border Patrol. They are being released with little or no supervision and no fear of deportation. The fact is that no matter how many times DHS Secretary Mayorkas says the border is closed, the numbers don’t lie. Since March, at least 160,000 illegal migrants have been released into the United States. There is a broad use of limited parole authority that made more than 30,000 migrants eligible for work permits
