We normally don’t use this space for personal announcements. That isn’t the purpose or mission of Issues & Insights. But, since we answer to no one but ourselves, we can break our own rules.
On Saturday, our family lost our 12-year-old Beagle, Rocky, to cancer. We didn’t even know he had cancer until a week before.
After a recent move, we’d taken Rocky to a new vet for a wellness check and mentioned that his eating habits had recently changed. Instead of his normal voracious appetite – so voracious that we had to buy a dish designed to slow down eating

One of my most fervent wishes is that in Heaven our pets will all be there, too. I can't imagine God giving us these wonderful friends and then depriving us in the afterlife, so I am confident that it will be so. Our pets enrich our lives, and it is so sad when they depart.

I empathize with you more than I can express here. You and Rocky had a wonderful 12 years that you wouldn't have had without him.

I believe Animal Lovers and Owners are the best people in the world. It takes a special type of person to care for one of God's creatures. They cannot tell you when they hurt, but you know, and know when it is time to let them go from your life physically, but not emotionally, to the land of no pain and playing with others in a place of permanent wonderfulness in God's land.
Thank you, "Rocky", for being such a wonderful friend; I know he loved you as much or more as you did him.
I believe we will be reunited with our loved ones (including our pets) when we pass through the pearly gates; they will all be waiting there to greet us with lots of love and wet puppy kisses. God Bless you for being such a kind human being to give such wonderful care to one of God's creations.

Wonderful comments and reflections already in this thread. It takes very little to feel the loss of our precious companions rise to the surface...and even have to choke back a tear. Each is unique and forever missed.
We lost our feisty little blind Yorkie granddog yesterday. She spent every one of her 15 years being Top Dog over the many other dogs in her home, all much bigger.
I, too, pray that God will send them all to lead us to heaven when it's our time. What bliss thar will be.

One of my cousins once said that the trouble with dogs is that you love them too much and they don’t live long enough. He was right. We lost our dog just before Christmas last year, and it was hard to take. Thanks, OP.

I took in my mom's cat when she went into assisted living and had him for five wonderful years. He never forgot my mom as I discovered when I once played a recording of her voice and he ran all over my house looking for her. He was one dejected tomcat when he couldn't find her. He passed away nine months after she did. It was like losing my mom all over again. I had him cremated and spread his ashes on her grave. They're together again.

If the Rainbow bridge is true, and I hope it is...I'll be like the Pied Piper but it will be dogs instead of rats..I've had so many over the years...

My son died of cancer at 29 and bequeathed us his Great Dane. That sweet dog lived to be almost 11, and was happiest just laying on the couch with me (he took 3/4 of it). One day he just didn't want to get out of bed--and we knew it was his time. Our lovely vet came to the house and spared him the angst of going to the vet office. It was so hard on all of us-- losing this special dog was like losing our son all over again. I completely understand and sympathize with your feelings about losing Rocky and Kimberley. It happens just like that. Prayers!

Condolences to you Rocky TBC. We lost our precious Yorkie almost 3 years ago, and I'm still not over it. We've had many pets and loved all of them, but she was just perfect from day one. I know we'll see each other again.

Our sweet Bertie Woofster is 11 now. He had arthritis in his joints and two back legs that don't work very well most days. He's a 106 pound puppy and when he goes it will devastate my husband. I hope we have several more years with him. He loves terrifying the kitty, chasing chipmunks and squirrels, and eating. He is the delight of my heart. I feel for all those who have lost their best friends and pray too, that we will all be reunited one day in heaven. I wonder if they will be able to tell us what all of their yelps, woofs and wah, wah, wahs were about. I really want to know.

When Mr. Merline is ready to adopt another beagle, perhaps he should consider:

Being an animal lover, I'm so sad to hear about Rocky!
Suggest a Shelter Dog, they all want forever homes and will LOVE YOU like Rocky did!
