Republican Tennessee Rep. Tim Burchett is calling for the return of hanging as a federal execution method in response to one of the most depraved crimes in recent memory: the months-long torture, rape, and murder of 19-year-old Isabella Stroupe in Charlotte, North Carolina. In a viral X post on Sunday, Burchett directly quoted a detailed account of Stroupe’s horrific death and asserted, “I have a bill to bring back hanging. Let’s see if all the tough talk by Congress holds up. Support the Drop Act.” Stroupe, 19, was found dead in an east Charlotte apartment in early May. The method of execution is really not important. Reasonably swift execution of justice is. Hangings in the public square are entertainment and demeaning us all. Waiting the average of over two decades after conviction to execute the guilty is immoral and an injustice to both victims and their families. It also fails to deter crime which is one of the main purposes of our erstwhile justice system.

About sixty years ago, someone somewhere--not the Boy Scouts!--taught me how to tie a hangman's noose. It's very simple, takes no more than twenty seconds for however many loops you want. A slip knot around the neck (as was used on an extremely peeved "I am President of Iraq!" Saddam Hussein in late '06 before they pushed him off the platform) would probably work in a hanging, but lacks class. A perfect noose shows that the hangman cares. Yes, it should be a legal method of execution. Have you ever read Truman Capote's classic In Cold Blood? (The movie was excellent, too.) Two deserved 1965 hangings for the 1959 murders of the entire Herbert Clutter family, four souls, in Holcomb, Kansas.

I’ve always said that public hangings are an excellent idea. The condemned should get ONE appeal, to a state supreme court - after that, it goes ahead. Executions should be in the county in which the crime took place, preferably a gallows at the county courthouse, on a Saturday at noon. If vendors want to sell beer and hot dogs, that would be okay. The only thing wrong with the death penalty is that it isn’t used nearly enough.

I am only opposed to the noose because of it's failure rate. The drop calculations have to be dead on (I crack me up...) or you either have a decapitated corpse, or some idiot just hanging around for hours/days .

Well dang. My memory was defective on Saddam's hanging. His hanging squad had a nice noose with approximately seven loops under his left ear before the trap door was sprung. Saddam Hussein al-Tikriti didn't make it through the procedure. Hussein wanted to be shot, but nooooo. He gets to dance the hempen jig. Just what he feared. Sic semper tyrannis.

In cases of murder, why not do to the perp exactly what they did to the victim, if you can find anyone to do it. I think that would be a very good deterrent.

WASHINGTON — The Trump White House’s budget office is tightening a rule for the distribution of up to $1 trillion in federal grant-making authority, ensuring taxpayer dollars are better protected from use by non-citizens and speeding up the process by which wasteful spending can be canceled. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) will propose the fixes to address “significant flaws” in the grants, at least 190,000 of which date from former President Joe Biden’s final year in office, officials told The Post Thursday. One official said that the expected changes will have the greatest effect on the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees roughly $85 billion

The June 2024 presidential debate between then-President Joe Biden (D) and then-GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump was inarguably one of the most consequential events in American political history, largely because it proved to the American people beyond a shadow of a doubt that the occupant of the Oval Office was unwell. As we all know, it led to Biden withdrawing from the presidential race three weeks later after essentially being forced out by his fellow Democrats. It was a reckoning of sorts for the Democrat Party, the Biden-Harris administration, and the mainstream media, all of whom played starring roles in the deliberate years-long cover-up of Biden's decline,

Shirley, who uncovered hundreds of millions of dollars of daycare fraud in Minnesota and hospice fraud in California, took to X to share his thoughts on the vote. According to the bill’s text, AB 2624 would “prohibit a person from posting on the internet the personal information or image of a designated immigration support services provider, employee, or volunteer, or other individuals residing at the same home address.”

Where’s the beef? Not in Texas — at least, not as much as it used to be. Texas barbecue joints are shutting their doors across the Lone Star State as sky-high beef prices turn brisket — once the centerpiece of a blue-collar meal — into a luxury item that many customers can no longer afford. From Houston suburbs to rural smokehouses, pitmasters say soaring wholesale beef costs, inflation and shrinking customer traffic are crushing margins and forcing some of the state’s most celebrated BBQ institutions out of business.

One of the areas where Sharia law appears to be making inroads into American society is through the U.S. financial system. Under Sharia, or Islamic, law, charging interest (“riba”) on loans or earning interest on deposits is forbidden for even observant Muslims living in America, a strange anachronism in a country where interest- and credit-based finance is a cornerstone of the economy. According to Sharia-compliant fatwas, or rulings, recently issued by the Fiqh Council of North America, Muslims are prohibited even from investing in the stocks of any companies whose interest-based debt exceeds 30% of their market capitalization, or whose interest-based deposits exceed 30% of the market cap of their total equity.

Non-whites are set to become the majority for the first time in the US by 2050, a situation mirrored in up to 16 states — including New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, according to new census data. The expected transformation reflects astonishing demographic changes projected to sweep across America by between 2040 and 2050, fueled by international and internal migration, as well as falling birthrates, the US Census Bureau figures show. In 1980, the US was 80% white, but that figure is expected to drop to 47% by 2050 and 44% by 2060. At the state level, some of the shifts are even more striking.

Given the relative difference between how the two would have voted over the next six years, the gain from nominating Paxton probably doesn't justify the assumed risk of dethroning the incumbent Cornyn. It might take more money to fight for the seat in the general election, but that assumes that Democrats would have left Texas alone had Cornyn eked out a win over Paxton.
