As Beege wrote earlier, the Governor of Maine, Janet Mills, has dropped out of the Democratic Party race to become the next candidate for Senate this fall. It's an excellent piece, of course, but the subject bears even more discussion. Mills was the hand-picked candidate of Chuck Schumer, who will himself likely be booted from his formerly safe New York Senate seat by a socialist candidate. As the Senate Minority Leader, he should have had all the cards, or more specifically, all the money in the world, to help Mills get over the finish line. Mills dropped out because she ran out of cash. Nobody cares what Chuck thinks

Trump Signs DHS Funding Bill After Record-Setting Shutdown 1 reply

President Trump on Thursday signed a bill to fund most of the subagencies within the Department of Homeland Security after a 76-day shutdown of the department. Earlier on Thursday, House lawmakers approved the DHS funding measure, which was first passed by the Senate more than a month ago, to fully fund subagencies that do not carry out immigration enforcement, including the Coast Guard, TSA, Secret Service, FEMA and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Republican lawmakers now plan to advance a separate bill to fund Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Trump has asked Republicans to send that measure to his desk by June 1.

Israel is on heightened alert, ramping up preparations for a possible return to fighting with Iran, amid indications that US President Donald Trump may be nearing a decision on renewed military action, Channel 12 News reports. Trump is reportedly being briefed at the White House on military options by US Central Command chief Adm. Brad Cooper, as Israeli officials held a series of intensive consultations amid what they see as growing momentum toward a decision in Washington. According to Channel 12, Israeli officials are bracing for the possibility that negotiations between the US and Iran could collapse as early as the start of next week. The report cites cabinet ministers briefed

The Iranian embassy in the United Kingdom is facing sharp criticism after reports said it urged Iranians living in the UK to "sacrifice their lives" for the country in a social media message. The post, which was widely circulated online, has raised concerns among British officials and observers, with many calling the language inappropriate and alarming. According to a report by The Independent, the embassy shared a message on its official Telegram channel promoting a campaign called "Jan Fada", which translates to "devotion" or "sacrificing one's life". The message appeared to encourage expatriates to stand up for Iran and even become "martyrs" if needed.

They’ve hit the mother lode. We may no longer need to rely on foreign batteries to power our electronics. Geologists have announced that the Appalachian Mountains could be hiding a sprawling multi-billion-dollar cache of lithium that could last the US hundreds of years. “This research shows that the Appalachians contain enough lithium to help meet the nation’s growing needs,” declared US Geological Survey Director Ned Mamula in a statement. According to a map by the institution, this East Coast mountain range houses around 2.5 metric tons of this battery precursor, most of which is concentrated in the Carolinas, Maine and New Hampshire. Total value: around $64.4B dollars.

The Supreme Court’s liberal justices called their colleagues’ decision clawing back race-based redistricting on Wednesday a “now-completed demolition” of the Voting Rights Act. In a 48-page dissent, Justice Elena Kagan held up the landmark 1965 law as helpful to the nation’s progress on racial discrimination. “At this last stage, the Court’s gutting of Section 2 puts that achievement in peril,” Kagan wrote. “I dissent because Congress elected otherwise,” she continued. “I dissent because the Court betrays its duty to faithfully implement the great statute Congress wrote. I dissent because the Court’s decision will set back the foundational right Congress granted of racial equality in electoral opportunity. I dissent.”

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court will weigh arguments Wednesday over the Trump administration’s push to end legal protections for Haitians and Syrians as migrants fleeing war and natural disaster. Haitians and Syrians were among those from 17 countries with Temporary Protected Status, which allows migrants already in the U.S. to stay with work permits in 18-month increments, so long as the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security deems their country of origin unsafe for return. Since President Donald Trump ’s second term began, Homeland Security has ended the protections for 13 countries, exposing their migrants to potential deportation. The case focuses on

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Wednesday further weakened the Voting Rights Act, ruling that a congressional map in Louisiana was a racial gerrymander even though it was drawn to comply with the landmark law aimed at protecting minority voters. The justices, split 6-3 with the court's conservatives in the majority, told states they can almost never consider race when drawing maps to comply with Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which was enacted to protect minority voters who long faced discrimination in elections.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday sided with a pro-life pregnancy resource center that had raised First Amendment concerns about a New Jersey investigation into its practices. The Court handed First Choice Women’s Resource Centers a unanimous procedural victory in the case, which centers on a state investigation into whether it misled patients to discourage abortions. The ruling allows First Choice to challenge, in federal court, a subpoena it received from then-New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin (D) demanding donor lists and other information from the center.

Sure, it's not antisemitism. It's a political statement against Bibi Netanyahu or something. A benefit concert for the victims of the Bondi Beach massacre in Australia has been canceled because the choir that was scheduled to sing refused to share the stage with a Jewish choir group. You can't make this up. Surprised to find an action like this from the cultural elite? I'm not. Rep. It should not be allowed anywhere in our country,” the Texas Republican told The Daily Signal. “The vast majority of states have already banned this third‑world practice. It’s time for Congress to finish the job and enact a nationwide prohibition.” Marriage between close family members is legal, with few or no restrictions, in 18 states and the District of Columbia. Self argues that blood‑related marriages are common in certain ethnic and cultural groups, with rates reaching

We’re in the eighth week of the Iran waropens in a new tab, and things are starting to heat up even though there’s not kinetic action. What do I mean by heating up? The Iranian government has ceased to exist. We don’t know, and the Iranians don’t know who holds power. There is the Islamic Revolutionary Guard. There is the theocracy, there is the elected people in Parliament, and there is a regular military. And those four groups operate in schizophrenic fashion. By the same token, sometimes they give off signals that they would like to negotiate because that is predicated on popular resistance.

The Koh-i-Noor, one of the world's most famous diamonds, is set in the Crown of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, in the Tower of London.

The lawyer for White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting suspect Cole Allen gave an absurd reason why the CalTech grad should be allowed to walk free pending trial, claiming he was “not a danger to anybody” — despite charges that he attempted to assassinate President Trump. Defense attorneys claimed that Allen, 31, was not prepared to carry out a mass shooting in the room where Trump, first lady Melania, and most of the top members of the administration were in attendance, because he had a pump-action shotgun, his team wrote in papers Wednesday. “Mr. Allen has no criminal history — not even prior arrests, which alone would rebut the presumption of detention,”

But, while SPLC’s experts helped the media understand America’s racism problem after the rally, it was allegedly funding an organizer of the event, a member of a racist group prone to extremism. At the same time it was double-dipping, the Charlottesville rally launched SPLC’s credibility to new heights and boosted its fundraising hauls. Throughout the last decade, SPLC also covertly funded members of racist groups prone to extremism, including the Aryan Nations,

Americans love arguing about free speech. We invoke the First Amendment as a kind of political force field: You can say whatever you want, whenever you want, without consequence. But the First Amendment only restricts government action. It does not guarantee you a career, a platform or immunity from backlash. The real question is not whether certain speech is legal but rather what kind of speech deserves social consequences — and what kind doesn't. And if we're talking about reckless political speech, we should talk about Jimmy Kimmel. Years ago, he abandoned comedy in favor of applause lines, tearful monologues and the occasional performance of empathy. He's an unfunny
