Eight dead, one missing in Lake Tahoe
avalanche tragedy

Eight people are confirmed dead, with one more skier still missing in the horrific avalanche that happened just outside of Lake Tahoe. Nevada County Sheriff Shannan Moon provided the grim update on Wednesday, 24 hours after the avalanche was first reported. Moon stated four travel guides and 11 guests were caught in the avalanche. Among those 15, 6 had been rescued — one man and five women from ages 30-55. Moon said eight of the remaining nine are confirmed dead, and one is still missing.

Comments:

In 2000 "climate scientists" predicted The End Of Snow in fifteen years. Maybe those "scientists" should have to face the families of those killed in the massive avalanche - - and repeat their predictions to them.

The excitement and exhilaration when they set forth in that pristine new powder must have been incredible. Only expert skiiers do this. But avalanches show no favorites. Presser this am said one lost was the "spouse" of a member of the elite search and rescue team.

Winter finally arrived in the western states. I guess the ski resort operators can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Having been out in that area a few times, one of the first things I noticed while driving around was the seven-foot-tall markers along the roads. When I inquired about those tall poles, I was told it was to help the snowplows and blowers know where the road was located since when it snowed, it came down in feet, not inches. Go to Donner state park and see the monument dedicated to the Donner Party. The base of that monument is I believe over twenty feet high, and it was to indicate how deep the snow was when the Donner party was there. Even old photos of that area show tree stumps cut down by those trapped there were cut off some twenty feet high.

I have spent a lot of time in the area. Soda Springs gets more snow most anywhere in the world, its called Donner Pass for good reason. 2 feet in 24 hours is a dusting, there was a lot more besides that already. What the heck were they doing out there, the snow would be too deep to do most anything except dig a hole. There are peaks over 10K feet all around Donner Pass (I-80) which is the low spot at a little over 7K. The tour company is in big do.

They are saying the missing person is probably deceased too. It's impossible to reach the location due to waist-deep snow. The bodies may not be recoverable anytime soon since doing so would endanger the lives of search and rescue members. Just a terrible tragedy in an area with a long history of wintertime tragedies.

Avalanches leave people buried several feet deep in the snow, packed in so tightly that they can barely move a finger. Escape is impossible unless they're dug out by someone else. They must be rescued quickly, or they die all packed in. Rescuers are faced with a solid white environment where people aren't found quickly unless a foot or a hand is exposed. Anyone in an avalanche zone would be well advised not to spend too much time there. One of my favorite climbers, Alex Lowe, perished in an avalanche on Shishapangma, the fourteenth highest mountain on earth, slightly over 26,200 feet. That mountain isn't known for being a particularly difficult climb, but .... Lowe was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Nature is unforgiving.

It’s a real dumpster fire. Wild video shows the back of a city Sanitation Department truck ablaze in the middle of a snow-packed Queens street Monday morning. The footage obtained by The Post captured bright-orange flames bursting from one the receptacles on the back of the DSNY truck, halfway down a residential Kew Gardens street — with heaps of dirty snow still piled up around parked cars. The fire – likely sparked by a lithium-ion battery improperly tossed in the trash, according to the DSNY – erupted around 9:40 a.m. on Kew Gardens Road near 82nd Avenue, the FDNY said.

The Bank of England was advised to create a plan for the inevitable financial chaos that will result if and when world governments disclose the existence of aliens, according to a report. Former senior financial security analyst Helen McCaw sent a letter to the UK’s central bank urging the institution to prepare for the economic impact of little green men, the Times of London reported. If such a disclosure comes from the White House, Cambridge-educated McCaw projected in her letter, the revelation send shockwaves through financial markets and the banking system — and inspire general unrest amongst Earthlings.

Demand for sex workers in Davos skyrocketed during this year’s World Economic Forum — including one client who allegedly shelled out a whopping $114,000 for four days with five women. The apparent work hard, party harder attitude of the global elite was apparent in the voracious appetite for escorts in the Swiss town, where global leaders, big tech CEOs and moneyed magnates sent requests for sex workers surging, according to the Swiss dating and erotic services platform Titt4Tat.

Anti-Israel activist and former Columbia grad student Mahmoud Khalil is set to be deported to Algeria — bringing an end to a drawn-out court battle over his immigration status, federal officials said. The Syrian-born activist, who was arrested by ICE early last year, is slated to be booted from the US after the Trump administration accused him of committing fraud on his green card application. “It looks like he’ll go to Algeria. That’s what the thought is right now,” Homeland Security assistant secretary, Tricia McLaughlin, told NewsNation’s “Katie Pavlich Tonight” Wednesday.

WASHINGTON — The repressive Iranian regime is likely in its “final days and weeks,” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz dramatically predicted Tuesday — as shocking images emerged of thousands killed in a bloody crackdown by Tehran. “If a regime can only keep itself in power by force, then it’s effectively at the end. I believe we are now seeing the final days and weeks of this regime,” Merz told reporters during a trip to India. “In any case, it has no legitimacy through elections in the population. The population is now rising up against this regime.”

Gov. The Big Apple already has universal Pre-K and 3K programs, and Hochul said she will partner with new Mayor Zohran Mamdani to age down and fully fund the program to cover 2-year-olds. “This is getting on a roadmap to continue what has already started in the city with four-year-olds and three-year-olds,” Hochul said on MS-NOW Thursday morning previewing the proposal.

Disgraced ex-Prince Andrew was arrested Thursday on suspicion of misconduct in public office for allegedly forwarding confidential trade documents to pedophile pal Jeffrey Epstein. At least six unmarked police cars and around eight plain-clothed officers swooped on the king’s brother’s Sandringham Estate in eastern England early Thursday — Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s 66th birthday. If convicted on the misconduct charge, the former prince faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. One officer was seen carrying a police-issued laptop after arriving at Sandringham at around 8 a.m., with the cars leaving around 30 minutes later. Police also searched a separate property in Berkshire, the force said, without directly identifying the king’s brother, citing strict UK laws.

Pritzker unveiled his suburban Section 8 plan during his annual State of the State address, which he gave Wednesday. Taking aim at single family homeowners in the Chicago suburbs, Pritkzer said their “shameful” opposition to taxpayer-subsidized Section 8 apartments are responsible for driving up the cost of Illinois housing. Community zoning laws “have made it too difficult and costly to build new (Section 8) housing,” Pritzker said, chiding suburban Illinoisans who oppose high-density, subsidized apartments as old-fashioned and behind the “times.”

According to the report, US plans included the use of Diego Garcia and the RAF Fairford base in England, both of which can only be used to strike if the UK government agrees.
