200M people across the US in path of potentially
historic winter storm bringing ‘considerable disruption’

Several emergency declarations have already been issued as a massive winter storm barrels toward more than 35 states, putting more than 200 million people in its path and threatening “considerable disruption” to New York with up to a foot of snow. Texas, North Carolina, and South Carolina were the first to issue preemptive emergency declarations after the National Weather Service warned that “nearly everyone east of the Rockies” will be affected by snow, ice, or cold from Friday into early next week. The potentially historic winter storm, dubbed Winter Storm Fern, is expected to span more than 2,000 miles

There's snow and then there's ice. Snow doesn't bother me, its the ice that will down the power lines in sub freezing weather and it's no joke.

Agree with #2. We have had several ice storms here in N. GA. over the years. No power for 2-3 days. On somewhat posh Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, the residents were splitting up their inside doors for firewood. We are hoping the breathless reporting on the media are overreactions.

There is nothing "historic" about a winter storm. They are as predictable as the hysterical public response to "the sky is falling" pronouncements. There is no reason to run to the store to buy 10 gallons of milk and all of the bread on the shelf. Give it a rest already..

Winter storms have been happening for 100,000 years or more. The problem is that people don't plan well for these somewhat infrequent events. Folks who will be in the ice storm area better have a backup method for heating their homes. We had a bad ice storm in the KC area and older suburbs with above ground power lines were out of power for 7 to 10 days. It's hard for the crews to repair the power lines when the big, mature trees have dropped big branches, chopping the power lines into 50 foot segments. Not exaggerating. I drove thru a neighborhood to visit a friend three days after the storm, and the street was barely pasable after three days of cutting 10-18 inch branches up enough to get a single lane through, power lines everywhere, power poles snapped like twigs. Setting hundreds of power poles and making thousands of splices takes a long time. A good generator and an alternate heat form if you can't get the power needed are basic necessities in places where these storms can occur.

The trigger is many of these folks aren't accustomed to heavy snow much less an ice storm. What might be a minor hindrance to those of us in the North, is a show stopper in the rural south. Governments don't have much in the way of road salt, much less a fleet of plows. Hopefully it will be a mess of rain and we who can deal with it will get enough snow and cold to kill off the bugs for next spring.

Those poor folks. As a former northern Illinois native, (now Colorado for 50 years) I can attest to these conditions. Standing at the high school bus stop in January in subzero weather on dark windy mornings wearing no head covering so could show off to the girls who were there wearing their short skirts and nylons while freezing our collective behinds off. It's what teenage hormones do.

So, we have better technology to see these types of weather events with greater accuracy and advanced notice. This makes them seem "scarier" but also provides time to prepare (unless you're one who thinks the government will always take care of you). Time to prepare should mean government too. Allowing them time to look at overgrown trees that may impact electrical lines, cleaning out sewers to ensure water doesn't back up, etc... Or, basic proactive government services.

There was a series of horrendous winters in the 1880s that were truly frightening. In one storm hundreds of children died trying to make their way home in a fast-moving blizzard. Today we have warnings galore - most of which are overly hysterical.

The Bank of England was advised to create a plan for the inevitable financial chaos that will result if and when world governments disclose the existence of aliens, according to a report. Former senior financial security analyst Helen McCaw sent a letter to the UK’s central bank urging the institution to prepare for the economic impact of little green men, the Times of London reported. If such a disclosure comes from the White House, Cambridge-educated McCaw projected in her letter, the revelation send shockwaves through financial markets and the banking system — and inspire general unrest amongst Earthlings.

Demand for sex workers in Davos skyrocketed during this year’s World Economic Forum — including one client who allegedly shelled out a whopping $114,000 for four days with five women. The apparent work hard, party harder attitude of the global elite was apparent in the voracious appetite for escorts in the Swiss town, where global leaders, big tech CEOs and moneyed magnates sent requests for sex workers surging, according to the Swiss dating and erotic services platform Titt4Tat.

The Syrian-born activist, who was arrested by ICE early last year, is slated to be booted from the US after the Trump administration accused him of committing fraud on his green card application. “It looks like he’ll go to Algeria. That’s what the thought is right now,” Homeland Security assistant secretary, Tricia McLaughlin, told NewsNation’s “Katie Pavlich Tonight” Wednesday.

WASHINGTON — The repressive Iranian regime is likely in its “final days and weeks,” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz dramatically predicted Tuesday — as shocking images emerged of thousands killed in a bloody crackdown by Tehran. “If a regime can only keep itself in power by force, then it’s effectively at the end. I believe we are now seeing the final days and weeks of this regime,” Merz told reporters during a trip to India. “In any case, it has no legitimacy through elections in the population. The population is now rising up against this regime.”

Gov. Kathy Hochul rolled out broad strokes of a multi-billion-dollar plan Thursday to offer “free” child care for all two-year-olds in New York City, while expanding pre-K and early child care programs in the rest of the Empire State — with no tax increases, at least this year. The Big Apple already has universal Pre-K and 3K programs, and Hochul said she will partner with new Mayor Zohran Mamdani to age down and fully fund the program to cover 2-year-olds. “This is getting on a roadmap to continue what has already started in the city with four-year-olds and three-year-olds,” Hochul said on MS-NOW Thursday morning previewing the proposal.

As millions of people braced for a massive winter storm to hit two-thirds of the country, grocery store shelves in the South, Midwest and Northeast started to look a little bare. Two essentials everyone seems to stock up on ahead of winter weather, bread and milk, were hit especially hard. But why do people gravitate to those two items in particular? Milk could go bad if you lose power, after all, and bread isn’t exactly a strong source of nutrition. Accuweather reports the idea of buying milk and bread before a winter storm dates back to the Great Blizzard of 1978, which hit New England.

Now we're watching the same playbook unfold with 37-year-old Alex Pretti, the armed agitator shot dead by Border Patrol agents on Saturday in Minneapolis while confronting agents. There is a difference that not even all conservatives understand between free speech and explicitly wishing harm or terror on someone. Even the Founders were in agreement that calling for someone’s death or crippling injury is not, in fact, First Amendment-protected speech. Yet Newsom opted to be at least as boorish, slamming foreign leaders for being too polite to Trump — in the crudest language possible: “I can’t take this complicity, people rolling over. I should have brought a bunch of kneepads for all the world leaders.” Newsom has used the sexually-suggestive and degrading “kneepads” line before, bashing Republicans who defer to the prez. Used it because it works . . . among partisan Democrats.
