Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold escalated her standoff with the Trump administration this week, rejecting a request for the state’s full, unredacted voter file. “We will not comply with the Trump Department of Justice’s request for Coloradans’ sensitive voting information. The DOJ can take a hike; it does not have a legal right to the information. Colorado will not help Donald Trump undermine our elections and hurt the American people.” Colorado’s refusal comes as the DOJ expands lawsuits into at least 14 states for denying similar requests.

A New York pastor surprised churchgoers with the extraordinary revelation that he is transitioning into a woman and will now use she/her pronouns. Reverend Phil Phaneuf, 51, who was born male, shared that she has been undergoing a gender transition with her congregation at North Chili United Methodist Church (UMC) during Sunday service. 'I get to announce with joy that I am transitioning. I am affirming and saying to all of you that I am transgender,' the veteran pastor, wearing a rainbow stole, declared this past Sunday. ,

Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani tapped a convicted felon who served seven years for a string of armed robberies targeting New York City taxi drivers to advise him on the "criminal legal system."
Mysonne Linen, a rapper-turned-social justice activist, will serve on Mamdani's "criminal legal system committee," 1 of 17 committees that Mamdani created to help transition into his administration. Mamdani said the appointees "will be tasked with not only making personnel recommendations but policy recommendations."

For as little as $1, you can dim the sun — just a tiny bit — to save the world from climate change. At least, that’s the promise sold by a California start-up called Make Sunsets. Your dollar will pay for founder Luke Iseman to drive a Winnebago RV into the hills half an hour outside Saratoga, California, to release a balloon loaded with sulfur dioxide, an air pollutant normally spewed by volcanic eruptions. He and his 1,000 paying customers hope the balloon will burst in the stratosphere, releasing particles that will block sunlight and cool the planet. A better-funded competitor, Stardust, has raised $75 million

Amid reports of a federal crackdown targeting Somali immigrants, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey on Wednesday issued an executive order prohibiting law enforcement from using city-owned parking lots for immigration operations. The City of Minneapolis does not authorize this property to be used, and it may not be used, by any federal, state, or local government entity or personnel as a staging area, processing location, operations base, or any other similar use for civil immigration enforcement operations.”

The facts are still emerging through the fog of war (or is it the fog of law enforcement, or the fog of antiterrorism?). Sometimes people (including myself) draw conclusions on the basis of incomplete information, so let’s start with what’s really known.
Our military launched another missile attack on a drug-smuggling fast boat. The boat burst into flames and was dead in the water but did not immediately sink. On-scene surveillance showed that not all of the 11 crew members were killed. One or two men were seen moving in the water.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday ripped Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., as “garbage” and said Somalis should “go back to where they came from,” in disparaging remarks that have been strongly criticized by local leaders in Minnesota. “I don’t want them in our country. I’ll be honest with you, OK. Somebody will say, ‘Oh, that’s not politically correct.’ I don’t care. I don’t want them in our country. Their country is no good for a reason," said Trump, who has a history of disparaging African people and migrant communities.

Progressive Jersey City Councilman James Solomon is projected to beat former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey (D) in Jersey City’s mayoral election, according to Decision Desk HQ.
Solomon on Tuesday defeated McGreevey, who resigned from his post as governor in 2004 after revealing that he had an extramarital affair with a man, in an election to succeed current Mayor Steve Fulop (D), who opted to instead run for governor. Fulop lost in the Democratic gubernatorial primary to New Jersey Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill (D).
Solomon and McGreevey ran in a crowded race in November that included five others for the mayoral seat.

A stunning new report from the University of California, San Diego, reveals that incoming college students are less prepared for their classes than ever. The steep decline in academic readiness among its first-year students is particularly noticeable in mathematics. The UCSD paper shows that between 2020 and 2025, the number of students with math skills below high school level increased nearly thirtyfold. Additionally, 70% of these students are below the middle school level.

From the looks of it, this one could have been bad — really bad. Cops stopped a car that was in the park after hours in Wilmington, Delaware, in late November, and when the driver refused to exit the vehicle, officers detained him. What they found next was truly scary:
Police searched the Tacoma and found several items inside, including a loaded handgun, extended magazines, body armor, a laptop and binoculars.[snip]
The man, 25-year-old Luqmaan Khan, turned out to be a University of Delaware student. It gets worse:

A group of HIV-positive men gathered at the U.S.–Mexico border Sunday and staged a coordinated “kiss-in,” aiming to confront what they described as discrimination and hostile immigration policies under President Donald Trump.
The demonstration took place at Friendship Park/Parque de la Amistad between California and Mexico as activists marked the run-up to World AIDS Day, according to The Advocate. MPact Global Action for Gay Men’s Health and Rights officials organized the event. They said they intend to normalize public displays of affection by people living with HIV, push back against stigmas surrounding sex and dating, and highlight concerns that queer migrants face under Trump-era border enforcement.

Go ahead and put this in the category, "we told you so," Democrats are the pro-crime party. Need more proof? Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal (WA-7) wants to make Americans pay for illegal aliens' legal defense, and stop Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from being able to detain people who shouldn't even be in our country. During a press conference on Wednesday, Jayapal was joined by fellow Democrats to announce her bill H.R.2760 - The Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act - which has 123 Democrat co-sponsors in the House. Jayapal admitted that her bill not only "overhauls the detention system," but also "drastically scales back the use of detention" by
