Republican Talk of Changing Filibuster

Amid a long-running shutdown, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) has consistently defended the filibuster. That center has so far held. Republican-backed continuing resolution has failed to net the 60 votes needed to avert a filibuster, prompting some Republicans to flirt with the idea of altering it—a move last pursued by Democrats during the Biden administration.Yet despite some chatter a few days ago, lawmakers who spoke with The Epoch Times have mostly remained skeptical of such a maneuver. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) told reporters on Oct. 23 that the nuclear option—another term for a Senate rules change to sidestep the filibuster—would be “a mistake.” Also on Oct 23, Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) told reporters, “There’s no support on my side of the aisle to end the filibuster.”

Here's a thought: why doesn't Congress just pass an annual budget and bypass this CR nonsense? Both houses only require 51 votes to pass. Oh, that's right. Too much work and too many special interests.

It is not necessary for the Republicans to do away with the filibuster. Not possible anyway, as at least 5 of the Republicans would not support it. The Democrats will have to cave, because the Republicans and their supporters don't give a darn that the non-essential part of the government is shut down.

Rather than eliminating the filibuster go back to the way it was originally intended. You can filibuster as long as you can talk just as Jimmy Stewart did in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Allowing a filibuster to continue forever makes no sense.

Do it incrimentally. The Senate makes their own rules by majority (not 60) votes. Make them come in and talk. If that doesn't work. Change more rules. don't tell your constituents you're powerless. That;s not true. Pants on fire

#1, that's what the Republicans are trying to re-gain. It's called General Order which they've been working on and what the Democrat don't want. The CR process is supposed to be temporary and only in case of an emergency, but they have continued this process since fiscal year 2007 when Sen. Harry Reid (NV) implemented it to ensure his Senate Democrats didn't have any difficult votes that may cost them the Senate.

The slaying forced a reckoning in a country with little experience of gun violence, and ignited scrutiny of alleged ties between prominent conservative lawmakers and a secretive sect, the Unification Church. "Everything is true," Tetsuya Yamagami said at a court in the western city of Nara, admitting to the murder of the country's longest-serving leader in July 2022.

As the government shutdown winds on, Democrats continue to hold the federal government hostage because, they claim, “premiums will double” if Congress does not extend Covid-era enhanced Obamacare subsidies. I’ve debunked that topic in detail here and elsewhere, but to quickly summarize the argument: 1) The federal government will still pay on average 75-80 percent of enrollees’ premiums if the enhanced subsidies expire. 2) Nearly half of Exchange enrollees currently pay nothing in out-of-pocket premiums for benchmark coverage, which the Congressional Budget Office and others have concluded has led to over $10 billion in fraud every year. 3) Focusing on relative (i.e., percentage) increases ignores the comparatively modest effects

Then it was re-branded as the ‘SNAP’ program and destigmatized. People were encouraged to enroll. Now there are many more people using the program, many who probably don’t even really need it.

Fresh insights into the ecological devastation caused by onshore wind turbines around the world are contained in a shocking new paper published last month by a group of ecologists in Nature. The paper is paywalled and has attracted little mainstream media interest, but it highlights research that illustrates that the effect of utility-scale wind energy production “can be far reaching and sometimes have large and unexpected consequences for biodiversity”. An annual figure of around one million bats are killed in the countries with the highest number of turbines, but harmful effects are seen in many other parts of the ecosystem.
