Why Sharpies Are Made in America Again

President Donald Trump loves a Sharpie pen, and now he has all the more reason to love the company that makes them. The president signed the flurry of executive orders he issued the day he returned to office with a Sharpie. He's used them for years, finding them more reliable than fancier pens. Now we know they have another merit, too: They're almost entirely made in America. Only the felt tip of a Sharpie comes from abroad -- it's made in Japan, according to the Wall Street Journal's Natasha Khan, who published an eye-opening article on the penmaker last week. What makes Newell Brands, the corporation behind the Sharpie, so newsworthy

I agree with #1, an interesting look at manufacturing. And I really like the point that he made about 'naive free marketeers" putting up false comparisons. FTA" "T[the t]rouble is, nowhere on earth is steel manufacturing as fully private an enterprise [snip]. The choice Pino was presenting wasn't between government-backed steel or free-market steel -- it was between partly government-backed steel or no domestic steel-making at all.

Newell Brands has rediscovered what Robert Heinlein referred to as "enlightened self-interest". By that he meant that for most people, most of the time, it is in their best interest to look out for the interests of others as well. I may be able to make more money today by taking you for everything you've got, but, in the long run, if I do that I won't make another dime off of you in the future. On the other hand, if I make a deal with you which benefits both of us, you will be able, and willing, to do business with me again tomorrow. In addition, in most cases, if I make a deal with you which gives you more resources I will be able to make more off of those future deals than I could have made off of that initial deal, even if I had taken you for everything you were worth.

A Dallas-based auto lender built on giving car loans to illegals has just gone belly up, and it’s dragging Wall Street down with it. Tricolor Holdings was once hailed by the US Treasury as a “community development” success story. Now, they’ve just filed for bankruptcy as fraud allegations and a full-blown federal investigation overtake them. The company, which sold overpriced used cars to illegals and wrapped the scheme in a feel-good “social lending” label, is leaving major US banks like JPMorgan, Barclays, and Fifth Third staring at massive losses.

Trinity Washington University will hold a campus-wide "remembrance" event Tuesday for Assata Shakur, the domestic terrorist who murdered a New Jersey state trooper and later escaped federal prison. The private school in Washington, D.C., with around 1,900 students, is hosting a "full-day" celebration of the "life, work, and enduring legacy of Assata Shakur." Faculty members and students will conduct a "community reading" of Shakur’s autobiography, a "critical discussion" of her life, and a "space for collective reflection and cultural appreciation." The school is Nancy Pelosi's alma mater, and she recently donated $1.5 million in Apple stock to establish a political center in her name.

The Trump administration's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention put the nail in the coffin of one-size-fits-all COVID-19 vaccine recommendations Monday, updating its children and adult vaccination schedules to encourage physicians, nurses and pharmacists to discuss harms and benefits from vaccination specific to each patient before they get jabbed. Parents may get an incomplete picture from healthcare providers who don't look too closely at federally funded research that promotes indiscriminate COVID jabs for kids, though. A research consortium buried a startling finding in its peer-reviewed study on biologically elusive "long COVID" and reinfection in patients under 21, published in a prestigious U.K. journal:

Speaking in front of thousands of pilgrims at St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, Leo warned that migrants must not be treated with “the coldness of indifference or the stigma of discrimination.” Without singling out any country in particular, Leo said that Catholics should “open our arms and hearts to them, welcoming them as brothers and sisters, and being for them a presence of consolation and hope.” Leo explained that the church was living through a “new missionary age” that tasked its members with providing “hospitality and welcome, compassion and solidarity” to migrants coming to the West.

Smith, whom U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon ruled was unconstitutionally appointed to go after then-presidential candidate Donald Trump, has a myriad of scandals in his past — including accusations of witness payoffs and illegal wiretaps from former Rep. A food aid program that helps more than 6 million low-income mothers and young children will run out of federal money within two weeks unless the government shutdown ends, forcing states to use their own money to keep it afloat or risk it shutting down, experts say. The $8 billion Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, also known as WIC, provides vouchers to buy infant formula as well as fresh fruits and vegetables, low-fat milk and other healthy staples that are often out of financial reach for low-income households. The shutdown, which began Wednesday, coincided with the beginning of a new fiscal year, meaning programs like WIC,

Republicans are overwhelmingly confident that they will win — 92 percent — and most independents, 62 percent, also believe Republicans will emerge as the victors.
