President Donald Trump has authorised the deployment of 300 National Guard troops to Chicago to address what he says is out-of-control crime.
The move came hours after immigration authorities said they faced off with protesters in the Democrat-run city and shot an armed woman when she and others rammed their cars into law enforcement vehicles.
State and local leaders have for weeks criticised Trump's deployment plans and called it an abuse of power. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker said Trump was "attempting to manufacture a crisis".
The announcement came as a federal judge in Portland, Oregon - another liberal city - temporarily blocked the Trump administration from deploying 200 troops there.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have reportedly come under fire in Broadview, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, from a woman identified only as a “U.S. citizen.” This comes after Illinois Gov. Navy chief of staff Jon Harrison was removed from his role on Friday in the latest Pentagon shakeup under War Secretary Pete Hegseth.
“Jon Harrison will no longer serve as Chief of Staff to the Secretary of the Navy,” a War Department spokesperson told The Post. “We are grateful for his service to the Department.”

Sortor was reportedly joking with officers when he was suddenly handcuffed and taken into custody. Sortor has now been released and has spoken publicly about the incident, offering his firsthand account of what happened. Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin reported Friday afternoon on Sortor’s arrest, saying that he had spoken to Sortor just minutes after his release from jail.
Melugin explained that Sortor told him he had been filming protesters the night before when federal agents hit them with mace. According to Sortor, the protesters didn’t appreciate his recording them in that vulnerable moment.

An FBI Agent was fired for refusing to arrest and perp walk James Comey, according to Reuters.
Per Reuters: “An FBI agent was relieved of duty for declining to arrange a “perp walk” of the bureau’s former director, James Comey, in front of news media cameras after Comey was federally charged last month, four people briefed on the matter said on Friday.”
Comey will be arraigned on October 9. His case was assigned to US District Judge Michael Nachmanoff, a Biden appointee.

A woman in Newburgh, Maine, was stunned to discover 250 unused state election ballots inside an Amazon package she had ordered, which was supposed to contain coffee, rice, and paper plates. Speaking anonymously, the woman said the package appeared to have been opened and resealed before it arrived at her home.After finding the ballots, she contacted local authorities, who helped transfer them to the Newburgh town clerk’s office. Japan’s ruling party picked conservative nationalist Sanae Takaichi as its head on Saturday, putting her on course to become the country’s first female prime minister in a move set to jolt investors and neighbors.
The Liberal Democratic Party, which has ruled Japan for almost all of the postwar era, elected Takaichi, 64, to regain trust from a public angered by rising prices and drawn to opposition groups promising stimulus and clampdowns on migrants.
A vote in parliament to choose a replacement for outgoing Shigeru Ishiba is expected to be held on October 15.
Takaichi is favored as the ruling coalition has the largest number of seats.
Nicholas Roske, the man who pleaded guilty to attempting to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, has been sentenced to 97 months in prison, a fraction of the 30 years the Justice Department was seeking.
Roske, who now identifies as a transgender woman and goes by the name “Sophie,” was arrested outside Kavanaugh’s home in June 2022 carrying a pistol and burglary tools. He pled guilty in April to attempting to assassinate Kavanaugh.
Judge Deborah Boardman, a Biden appointee, threw out most of the terrorism enhancement that would have resulted in a harsher sentence, opting to hand Roske a sentence of just over eight years, the length of time Roske’s attorneys requested.
