How 24-hour places died — and New York
became the City That Sleeps

On a recent Sunday evening, Imad Khachan encountered a problem once unthinkable in New York City. “I had a friend and his wife visiting from overseas,” says Khachan, the owner of Chess Forum, Greenwich Village’s last remaining chess shop. “They stopped by and said, ‘We’d like to go have dinner around nine o’clock.’ . . . I understand it was Sunday, but we really were hard-pressed to find a place that opened till 10 o’clock, let alone 24 hours. I couldn’t tell them where we [should] go. I felt so embarrassed.” Khachan’s experience reflects a strange new reality facing New York’s night owls.

Going out in New York City after hours has gotten to be like one of those cheesy old Zombie movies - "It will be dark soon!" Only the blood is real.

Not a good idea to be out after dark in any big city, but if you must there’s IHOP.

In other words it's like Atlanta has been since the 1970's. We had a nice place called Underground Atlanta starting in about 1960. Many great restaurants. But it was in a location that had a rough element nearby. End result is by 1975 anyone you met that had been to Underground had been mugged or car broken in. Mine was my car. But I also had several close encounters with likely robbers that caused me to run into a restaurant or bar and stand next to a bouncer. I quit going entirely by 1975. By then everything was mostly closed. Then the city kept trying and dumped more money start it back up. Every attempt met with the same fate. Now the big hotels on Peachtree mostly have an indoor privately controlled "mall" type thing. Then the city tried to have a yearly festival called Light Up Atlanta. Again in that same area. And the thugs invaded. Assaults prevailed. Enough bad circumstances including a murder that after only 4 years the Light Up Atlanta was unlit for good. Crime ruins everything.

When we left Los Angeles for Salt Lake City 13 years ago we were shocked when the entire city shut down about 10 pm every night and quite a bit of the place all day on Sunday. Nice to see crime is making big lefty cities roll up their sidewalks. SLC is a safe quiet place where open carry is almost as common as in the old West.

#6 is correct but you can bet the pop-up blasters are looking for a work-around now. I know a few ads are necessary and that sites have to be monetized in some way but the sheer number is making them ineffective. I have clicked on one or two in the past that interested me but won't now. Swarming potential readers with ads is going to kill the golden goose.

JD Vance in Wisconsin: Donald Trump Has

Vice President JD Vance says President Donald Trump has successfully gotten Democrats to support violent crime in the nation’s capital after the administration deployed the National Guard to help the Metropolitan Police Department cut crime. During a speech in La Crosse, Wisconsin, Vance said Democrats are going as far as to mock violent crime problems in cities across the United States, only because Trump is looking to step in and help local law enforcement to make communities safer. “Is Milwaukee a super safe city right now? It has some crime problems. It’s a beautiful city. There are a lot of incredible, hard-working people who live there,” Vance said.

The Department of Education (ED) announced on Thursday that a Colorado School District violated Title IX by converting a high school girls’ restroom into an “all-gender” restroom and by allowing students to access facilities that match their “gender identity.” The department’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) found Denver Public Schools (DPS) in violation of Title IX’s prohibition against sex discrimination after launching an investigation into the district in January. The department initiated the probe after a local report alleged that the district had converted a girls’ restroom in East High School to a multi-stall “all-gender” restroom,

Another tragedy unfolded in Minneapolis this past week, and the details are telling. Instead of an honest discussion about crime, violence, and the safety of our communities, we once again watched the media twist itself into knots to avoid offending the “protected classes” of today’s progressive culture. Who could’ve predicted that placating delusion and coddling mental instability would lead to unfettered violence? The storyline is predictable: when a criminal fits a certain profile, the media blasts it across the headlines as proof of some larger cultural plague. But when the same violence comes from a person who identifies as transgender,

I've been working on something about this for a couple of weeks, but other stories and life events have pulled me away from it. I tell you that because my original intro that I wrote last week said something about how the mainstream media isn't covering Venezuela properly at the moment. It still isn't, but it's beginning to, which is just another sign that we're getting closer to the edge of something big, most likely the end of the Nicolás Maduro regime and years of Chavista dictatorship in a country that is down on its knees.

Last month, Social Security celebrated its 87th “birthday.” Since being signed into law in August 1935 and beginning payouts on Jan. 1, 1940, Social Security has served as a financial foundation for our nation’s retired workforce. Today, more than 48 million retired workers are receiving a monthly check that averages $1,670.95, as of July. While this might not sound like a lot — especially with inflation at four-decade highs — Social Security plays a key role in helping recipients make ends meet. According to national pollster Gallup, 89% of surveyed retirees count on Social Security as a “major” or “minor” source of income.

President Trump on Thursday floated the idea of holding a 2026 national convention to galvanize Republicans ahead of the must-win mid-term elections. “I am thinking of recommending a National Convention to the Republican Party, just prior to the Midterms,” Trump posted on Truth Social. The president didn’t mention a potential venue, but advised supporters to “stay tuned.” Trump’s gambit would mark the first time the GOP has held a convention during a mid-term election. To explain his thinking, the president asserted that “the Republican Party is doing really well” and has raised “far more money than Democrats” -

On the north bank of the Thames, ironically opposite the Tower of London, a fortress is rising. Officially, it’s the new Chinese Embassy. In reality, it looks less like a diplomatic mission and more like the command post of a hostile power. A sprawling, six-acre compound big enough to garrison a small army. Europe’s largest embassy? Spare me. After GCHQ confirmed Chinese state-sponsored hackers have been targeting our telecoms, transport and even military infrastructure for years, only a fool would see this as anything other than a surveillance citadel with a red flag on top. One conveniently parked a stone’s throw from MI6.

There’s a certain way Democrat leaders are speaking in recent days, and they’re all expressing some variation of what the party’s national committee chair said this week: Democrats “cannot be the only party that plays by the rules anymore.” Everyone should interpret that to mean Democrats are out for blood, literally. That’s in no way an overstatement, not least because Democrats spent a significant portion of the last election season openly fantasizing about legally murdering Donald Trump (and then ultimately shrugging when he was actually shot). That’s in no way an overstatement,

Florida’s immigration jail known as “Alligator Alcatraz” will probably be empty of detainees within days, a state official has said, indicating compliance with a judge’s order last week that the facility must close. The Republican governor Ron DeSantis’s administration appealed the order by federal court judge Kathleen Williams that the tented detention camp in the Florida Everglades, which attracted criticism for its harsh conditions, must be dismantled within 60 days. But in an email reported Wednesday by the Associated Press, Kevin Guthrie, executive director of the Florida department of emergency management, which operates the jail on behalf of the federal government, appeared to confirm it would be shuttered.

The black community’s disengagement from ordinary acts of civic responsibility is harming America as a whole, but mostly, it’s harming blacks. To save their communities, blacks need to reengage with what was once normative polite conduct across American society. To appreciate this point, consider the tales told by abandoned shopping carts and litter. [snip] Here’s the thing: Shopping carts and litter are just the most benign signs of conscientiousness and citizenship. The lack of such betrays itself in far more malignant ways as well, and we’re seeing that across the country, particularly in videos: Spirit Airlines airport counters. Six Flags parks. A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration’s efforts to expand a fast-track deportation process, ruling that the broadened application of the sped-up process creates “a significant risk” that immigrants who may be entitled to stay in the U.S. will be hustled out of the country. In a decision issued Friday evening, U.S. District Judge Jia Cobb granted a request by an immigrant advocacy group to put a hold on a pair of policies the administration issued in January that made millions more immigrants eligible for expulsion from the U.S. under a process known as “expedited removal.”

It has been fully recognized since the November election that the Democratic Party has been hobbled more than a three-legged gelding, but things refuse to improve for that lot. Throughout this year, the party has seen its prospects withering across the board, whether it is in internal operations, public approval, voting efforts, fundraising, or media outreach. And much like the condition of the national media industry, there is no desire exhibited by them to change what is not working. And this week it became even worse. It was announced that the Bill Gates Foundation was suspending its monetary involvement with one of the primary non-profits affiliated with the Democratic Party.
