NPR has filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump challenging his executive order to end federal funding for NPR and PBS.
NPR, Colorado Public Radio, Aspen Public Radio and KSUT Public Radio filed the lawsuit Tuesday in federal court in Washington, D.C. They argue that Trump’s order violates the First Amendment’s protections of speech and the press.
“The president has no authority under the Constitution to take such actions,” the lawsuit adds. “On the contrary, the power of the purse is reserved to Congress.”

Don’t recall seeing anything in the United States Constitution about Government funding for radio either.

It's a good time to be a civil litigator in DC. The government suing itself is becoming a cottage industry.

NPR is free to say anything it wants but not entitled to taxpayer money.
There should be a heavy penalty for this frivolous lawsuit.

They can say what they want, but not on my dime. Maybe they can get Soros or their chief sponsor/client, the DNC to pay for their air time.

The argument re first amendment is trilogy’s, and plaintiffs should pay gov costs of defense.
The argument of impoundment will depend on political winds, noting it is filed in dc and the ruling of a dc court may not extend to Colorado. Still, the next year's budget can still shred out the future fortunes of subsidized radio

Not trilogy, trivial. And these radio stations should have have to show that their programming is bereft of political bias

Trump ran for election clearly saying he would defund NPR and PBS. The People elected him. That should settle the matter. What role do the courts have to play here?

Isn't the word "free" a part of the right of free speech.
You're free to speak. We're free not to pay for it.

I don’t recall voting to allow my taxes to be used for NPR. In fact, I don’t believe I voted to use my tax money for PBS either. Doesn’t PBS ask for donations. And if you do donate you get a “free” gift. Gifts are free! So your buying your own gift. Gotta love it! Scammers. All of them.

It is Trump's and Congress's job to set the budget. It is not up for judicial i8nterference. The courts are way out of bounds if they try to infringe on the rights of the other branches.

If anything involved in this lawsuit is constitutional, it is the funding itself of PBS and NPR that is unconstitutional.

Here in Mississippi, the Mississippi Public Broadcasting has classical music on their 'HD radio second channel', and is simulcast on one of their TV sub-channels, on the 'alternative audio' feature.

It depends on whether or not Congress specifically appropriated money for public radio. Please don't kill the messenger, but there exists some background information that indicates the plaintiffs may prevail. The president can ask Congress for approval for redirecting the appropriated dollars, as Biden did when he asked Congress to reprogram the money for Wall construction in Texas, that was appropriated by Congress in 2019, and signed into law by President Trump. In 2023, Biden failed to get Congressional support for his reprogramming request, so the monies went out the door as directed by Congress. A quote from Biden at the time, “The border wall — the money was appropriated for the border wall. I tried to get to them to reappropriate it, to redirect that money. They didn’t. They wouldn’t. And in the meantime, there’s nothing under the law other than they have to use the money for what it was appropriated. I can’t stop that.” It is fact that the Constitution confers the power of the purse to Congress and that the president has a duty to 'take care that the laws be faithfully executed.' In 1975, President Nixon was of the view that his administration was not obligated to disburse all funds allocated by Congress to states seeking federal monetary assistance under the Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972, popularly known as the Clean Water Act, and ordered the impoundment of substantial amounts of environmental protection funds. The Supreme Court in Train v. City of New York, ruled that the president could not order the impoundment of substantial amounts of Congressionally appropriated environmental protection funds for a program that the president tried unsuccessfully to veto.

It's long past time to get rid of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which is, as everyone is told on PBS programs, who funds the shows:
"The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, a private corporation funded by the American People."
A PRIVATE CORPORATION FUNDED BY THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.
Leftists would lose their minds if there was a conservative private corporation that was funded with tax dollars.
Cut the head off the serpent.
