The first pictures have emerged of a North Korean warship seemingly covered in tarpaulin after it capsized and sank in front of dictator Kim Jong Un.
Satellite images appear to show the naval destroyer languishing on its side alongside the dock where a launch ceremony had been held.
But the launch failed, and analysis of pictures taken on Thursday suggest the ship is now partially submerged and covered with bright blue tarpaulins in an apparent attempt to conceal the wreckage.
State media said the the 5,000-ton ship, which had been due to enter service next year, is designed to carry weapons systems including nuclear-capable ballistic and cruise missiles.

Bob Dylan celebrates his 84th birthday today. When he snagged the Nobel Prize for Literature a few years ago, I pulled out all the stops by posting a big set of my favorite covers of his songs. I don’t have any stops left to pull, but I’m adding another cover or four (again) this year in honor of his birthday today.

In February of this year, I wrote Trump imposes sanity on a green EV market. In that article I noted these characteristics of the rapidly closing electric vehicle—EV—doom loop:
*1000-pound batteries wear out expensive tires at incredible rates.
*Range is always less than the EPA and manufacturers claim. Public chargers are few and far between and often don’t work.
*EVs are much more expensive than comparable conventional vehicles.
*Parts are scarce and insurance and repair costs outlandish.
*They lose value at incredible rates and there is virtually no used EV market.
*They tend to spontaneously combust and since they make their own oxygen when on fire, are virtually impossible to extinguish.
*They’re bought almost exclusively

Today is the birthday of Minnesota native son Bob Dylan. He turns the ripe old age of 84. It’s not dark yet, but it’s getting there. I want to celebrate him as long we’re both still around to enjoy the occasion. He is a remarkable artist, self-invented, deep in the American grain.
A few years back I visited Dylan’s old home at 2425 7th Avenue East in Hibbing. The house is a small two-story residence with a one-car attached garage on the side. Many pro-Israel people I know, both Jewish and non-Jewish, are deeply worried about Trump’s current Middle East positions. He’s marginalizing Israel in negotiations with Saudi Arabia, accepting on the government’s behalf a luxury plane from double-dealing Qatar, and handing money to the goons in Syria. At the same time, he’s seemingly freezing out Israel, to the great consternation of Israel and its supporters.
So, what gives? Having read Charles Lipson’s superb analysis of the problems in dealing with an almost nuclear Iran, and how Biden created this monster, I suspect that “what gives” may be Trump trying an out-of-the-box approach to isolating Iran long enough for his economic policies

Just two days ago, two Israeli Embassy staffers were murdered as they left the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC, in what has been described as an antisemitic attack.
The alleged killer of Sarah Milgram and Yaron Lischinsky, who reportedly were "just days away" from becoming engaged, has been identified as Chicago native and Party for Socialism and Liberation member Elias Rodriguez, who allegedly yelled "free, free Palestine!" as he was being handcuffed, detained and led away by police officers.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) reintroduced a bill on Friday that could change the way Americans vote across the United States. Initially introduced by Wyden in 2017, the Vote at Home Act would give eligible voters the option to vote by mail (including via drop-off site), provide pre-paid envelopes to return ballots and would automatically register citizens to vote at DMVs.
Under the bill, voters who live in states with in-person, same-day voter registration would still have the option to vote at a polling station. The Vote at Home Act would also send ballots in the mail weeks ahead

NPR, Colorado Public Radio, Aspen Public Radio and KSUT Public Radio filed the lawsuit Tuesday in federal court in Washington, D.C. They argue that Trump’s order violates the First Amendment’s protections of speech and the press.
“The president has no authority under the Constitution to take such actions,” the lawsuit adds. “On the contrary, the power of the purse is reserved to Congress.”

In a brief return to Britain, I was concerned to see that London has undergone a dramatic demographic change. The city of my birth is visibly more Muslim than it was even four years ago. On the Tube, I saw more hijabs than baseball caps. The Muslim niqab -- with its full face covering -- is no longer rare.

The court has long failed to address the problem, and what I call “chronic injunctivitis” is now raging across the court system. Justices have only worsened the condition with conflicting and at times incomprehensible opinions. Both Democratic and Republican presidents have long argued that federal judges are out of control in issuing national injunctions that freeze the entire executive branch for years on a given policy.
