U.S. President Donald Trump said on May 23 that the United States will impose a 50 percent tariff on the European Union soon. “The European Union, which was formed for the primary purpose of taking advantage of the United States on TRADE, has been very difficult to deal with,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social. He added later that “our discussions with them are going nowhere” and that a 50 percent tariff is planned to begin on June 1.

Though textbook definitions say it is the nationals of the country imposing import tariffs that pay them, those of us who have lived in the real world know that exporting country entities will cut their margins as a first measure in order to maintain market share. The effect here will be to penalize an economic bloc whose two largest members (France and Germany) have been the biggest freeloaders on their NATO obligations. Ironically, the latest released data shows them barely reaching 2% of GDP spending on defense, and I suspect some of that movement is due to creative accounting...

That’s okay with me. It will hit France, Germany and Italy hardest. If we really wanted to get their attention, we could also figure out a way to get every would-be American tourist to Europe to stay home this summer! That would put quite a dent in their GDP’s!

There is no economic, fiscal, social or security justification for the EU to have a trade surplus with the US. IMO, all fears of what might happen are overblown.

I share #5's concern. We're not even pretending that this is constitutional anymore. The Constitution assigns tax and tariff power to Congress, not the President. Congress has passed laws giving the president limited delegated authority to negotiate to lower tariffs, and also to impose higher tariffs in the event of emergencies. This is not that.

A baby who was born with a rare genetic disorder that causes facial deformities was given a poor prognosis by doctors and abandoned by his birth parents. The Supreme Court on May 23 temporarily blocked lower court orders requiring the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to respond to freedom of information requests in a pending lawsuit. President Donald Trump issued Executive Order 14158 on Jan. 20, implementing DOGE, an advisory body that recommends cost-cutting measures for federal agencies. The executive order directed the entity to “implement the President’s DOGE Agenda, by modernizing Federal technology and software to maximize governmental efficiency and productivity.” Chief Justice John Roberts issued what’s called an administrative stay that puts lower court orders on hold while the justices consider how to handle the case. Roberts did not provide reasons for his decision.

At issue was President Trump’s plenary authority to remove Gwynne Wilcox, a former member of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), and Cathy A. The NLRB oversees laws protecting workers’ rights and union elections nationwide, while the MSPB defends federal government workers against political discrimination. The court’s order [READ ORDER HERE] is unsigned; however, it provides dissent from the three DEI appointed justices (lesbian, latina, black), and did not decide the underlying merits of the case, which will continue to play out in the lower courts. The U.S. Senate has decided to discuss a resolution that would roll back California’s stringent vehicle emission standards mandating the phasing out of gas-powered cars. On May 21, the Senate voted 51–46 to consider H.J.Res.88, a resolution seeking to nullify waivers granted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to California that allow the state to implement its Advanced Clean Cars (ACC) II regulations. The Clean Air Act bans states from establishing their own tailpipe emission standards for trucks and cars. However, California can get an exemption to the ban if it gets a waiver from the EPA. Following thewaiver approval, California can implement its own emissions rules.

Kennedy, in classic fashion, drilled in with precision. “The 76-day period you’re talking about, that’s the period between the time that President Trump was elected and President Biden left office. Is that right?” “That is correct,” Wright confirmed. Kennedy didn’t mince words

Many pro-Israel people I know, both Jewish and non-Jewish, are deeply worried about Trump’s current Middle East positions. He’s marginalizing Israel in negotiations with Saudi Arabia, accepting on the government’s behalf a luxury plane from double-dealing Qatar, and handing money to the goons in Syria. At the same time, he’s seemingly freezing out Israel, to the great consternation of Israel and its supporters. So, what gives? Having read Charles Lipson’s superb analysis of the problems in dealing with an almost nuclear Iran, and how Biden created this monster, I suspect that “what gives” may be Trump trying an out-of-the-box approach to isolating Iran long enough for his economic policies

It enlisted several mental health professionals to support their narrative. Dr. Bandy Lee, formerly of Yale University, claimed the president is showing clear signs of early dementia. Spanish authorities were experimenting with how far they could push their reliance on renewable energy before the Iberian Peninsula was hit with a massive power outage last month, it has been suggested. As people wait for more answers on what caused the power cut that disrupted tens of millions of lives across Spain and Portugal, several have questioned Spain's heavy reliance on renewable energy sources as it plans to phase out nuclear reactors. Spain's socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has rejected such criticism, asking for patience while the government investigates the causes of the historic blackout.
