Another week has come and gone in the nation’s capital, which means congressional Republicans are either doing nothing productive, wasting taxpayer money, or losing major policy fights. In the case of this week (and many others), it’s all of the above. On Americans’ dime, the GOP-run House was all but forced to abruptly end work on its legislative agenda on Tuesday for the remainder of the week amid efforts led in part by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, R-Fla., to allow representatives who are new parents to vote by proxy. [Snip] ...Luna took an oath to represent her constituents on a full-time basis.

Comments:

Mr. Fleetwood’s reminder that “showing up on a full-time basis” is expected of congressional members reflects a reality for employees in the private sector.

she's wrong. in person voting means congress meets and talks, and if she can' t be there and do that, she truly does not belong. it is not just about registering an opinion.

Bear in mind the "be there to vote" rules were put in place by Newt and the "New Republican Majority" in 1995 because Dems used to do it enmasse, with "Leaders" casting around 1/3 of total votes in stacks, by Proxy....and then revived by Pelosi during Covid. Note she does not proffer to extend the "Privilege" to any member that is actually IN a hospital for something other than maternity. A Texas repub Rep was in a nursing home for over a year, and not even her constituents were told she was absent, never to return. We just went through 4 YEARS of a Proxy Presidency, where he was seldom there, and nearly every action was by staff with an auto pen.

Abortion battles have been going on for a long time and are a waste of time and effort at the government level. Some people are okay with killing their unwanted children and there are always medically-trained people willing to accomodate them for a price, legal or otherwise. The fact that it is murder is pushed aside for purposes of convenience and they can rationalize the act with the best of criminals. Agencies like Planned Parenthood are trained to alleviate their guilt through propaganda. Even the name is deceptive, it's not "planned parenthood" it's planned child killing. As for voting by proxy, it doesn't matter for democrats who always vote in a 100% block because they are ordered to. Republicans should know better but their laziness and apathy is legendary.

the House cannot run on "baby" time - although sometimes it seems it does, in one form or another. the job of representative is full-time: hire a babysitter(i see Jasmine Crockett rents a car for $1000 a month and charges to taxpayer).this reminds me of Buttigieg pretending to still be SecTransportation while on 3 month paternity leave.

I also agree with #1. President Trump's agenda is very critical. Luna needs to be challenged in the 2026 primary. When you run for a position in the U.S. Congress, you need to make arrangements with family to be there to cast your vote. Luna's timing with either off or intensional to bring up the proxy vote when Trump's agenda vote was on the floor.

It’s systematic of Gen Y, which got worse with COVID lockdowns. They think you can “call it in” and take European style vacations. I’m a fan of work life balance, but leaders don’t get that luxury.

Proxy voting is a terrible idea but President Trump's comment on the controversy points the way to a reasonable compromise: "You're having a baby I think you should be able to call in and vote." All House sessions are televised so it is not necessary to be physically present to follow the floor consideration of a bill prior to voting.

Much like every other major story, the dying news media have managed to take a really interesting topic and thoroughly dumb it down to a limited set of monotonous slogans. [Snip] Me no like tariff! Tariff bad! [Snip] Ultimately, producers might decide it’s better to simply make their stuff in America in order to skirt the tariffs, which allows them to sell more of it in the world’s richest market (America). Or, other nations might remove trade barriers and allow more goods from the U.S. to be sold inside their borders if it means we eliminate or at least decrease the new tariffs. Ideally, both happen and everyone benefits.

Following President Donald Trump's "Liberation Day" speech from the Rose Garden on Wednesday afternoon, during which he announced a new wide-ranging tariff strategy, politicians took to their partisan corners to express their thoughts. [Snip] During his Rose Garden remarks, Trump held up a poster board showing the combined rate of tariffs and other non-tariff barriers that other countries impose on U.S. exports alongside the reciprocal tariffs the Trump administration plans to levy on imports from those countries. [Snip] "Trump’s tariffs aren’t starting a trade war--they’re ending one," ... "For decades, other countries ripped off American workers with unfair tariffs and barriers. Now, we’re finally fighting back. America First!"

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The liberal-leaning candidate is projected to win a high-profile and historically expensive election in Wisconsin on Tuesday, protecting progressive majority control of the battleground state's Supreme Court, which is likely to rule on crucial issues like congressional redistricting, voting and labor rights, and abortion. Higher education institutions in Ohio are barred from taking a stance on marriage after Republican Gov. Mike DeWine signed a law at the end of March deeming belief in the legal and religious union as “controversial.” Republicans billed the Enact Advance Ohio Higher Education Act as the best way to eliminate universities’ racist admission and hiring practices and expand ideological diversity by explicitly outlawing “political and ideological litmus tests” and requiring schools commit to “seek[ing] out invited speakers who have diverse ideological or political views.” The law also, however, requires institutions to declare they will not “endorse or oppose” “controversial beliefs,” including marriage.

Unlike so many of their fellow D.C. insiders, Hegseth is not beholden to the military-industrial complex and defense lobbyists wielding their influence throughout Washington.
