As the flames continue to force thousands out of their homes, some celebs and billionaires have sparked backlash for their "tone-deaf" move to save their investments. [SNIP] Keith Wasserman, co-founder of real estate investment firm Gelt Venture Partners, provoked fury after a post on X, in which he asked for "private firefighters" to protect his land in the A-list neighbourhood of the Pacific Palisades. [SNIP] Keith's post on Friday read: "Does anyone have access to private firefighters to protect our home in Pacific Palisades?
"Need to act fast here. All neighbors houses burning. Will pay any amount. Thank you."

Moron.
Your neighbors are burned out. Rubble (toxic) everywhere. Dust for years, as far as the eye can see, to remove debris. Trucks. Noise.
(Foreign) workers.
Let’s not even discuss road conditions, and shopping logistics.
But save your gate and pool. Enjoy.

So, let me understand this. You would like to pay private free enterprise companies to take on what was previously a public sector function funded by taxes, but only for your house, not for your state.
It's amazing how fast these people go free market when their government gores their ox.

I had no idea there was something called private firefighters. Is this like a business? What fires do they go to? The money sounds good, tho.

That's the way the world works. Money gives you options that less well-off people don't have. After Katrina hit New Orleans, the wealthy hired private security (former Israeli commandos) to protect their property from looters. Do I hold it against them? No. If you can afford it, it makes sense to do it.

# 7 - I totally agree with you. I just read an article about Rick Caruso, who lost to Karen Bass in mayor's race. He's the owner and developer of the Palisades Shopping Mall and hired private firefighters to save that vital commercial property, as well as his own house. I predict that the locals will be very happy that their premier mall will still be in business, not a burned out wreck like the rest of the place.
This article is pure socialist propaganda, and I can't believe Ldotters are falling for the "eat the rich", "blame the rich", just because they have greater financial resources...That They Worked For!

I agree with you. I'm also surprised by some of the comments in here. If you have the resources to protect yourself and your property, why wouldn't you? Yes, the socialist hyenas will complain on various online forums, but who really cares what woke liberals think?
For the record, I posted the article because I wanted to illustrate the mainstream media's embrace of socialist values, such as class warfare. Yes, liberals still tell us that anyone who's wealthy either inherited their money or accumulated it through dishonest means. It couldn't possibly be a result of a good education, hard work, long hours, investing and postponing gratification.

I don’t understand all the people who are angry because the rich are using their own resources to supplement inadequate public resources. They sound like a bunch of class envying Democrats.

Of course I would use my own resources to protect my own property. In fact, I practice that act continuously. I buy homeowner’s insurance, liability insurance, health insurance, hire lawyers when needed, invest in tax-sheltered vehicles, pay for investment and tax advice, prepare my estate plan and even pay to protect my family by giving them a good education. Why some envious and wrong thinking liberal would show his ignorance by criticizing those who are good stewards of resources that they own is, at best, a total fool.

Anyone wonder if some of these ''private firefighters'' are former firefighters that are retired or fired because they refused the jab? If you fit one of those categories, would you take $2,000 an hour to do a job for someone, billionaire or not? I would, in a heartbeat, to hell with the complainers.

I'm sure this idiot will happily share his private fire fighters with the rest of the burning inferno that is...was Los Angeles....it takes times like these that bring forth the real heroes....and the pick pockets....and I don't minimize his concern....but....this is where a real man steps up and works for his COMMUNITY...not just himself...take our incoming President Trump....he took a bullet for America... and kept on moving forward to help US survive....now there's a real hero....

Actually, I'm in favor of this. It means that public paid firefighters don't have to protect these homes. Think of it in terms of health care. Not getting the attention and care you want from Medicare or your employer paid health care plan? Pay out of pocket for what you want. You'd likely get someone who is more attentive to your wishes, much faster. And it leaves that much more in the pot for people who can't afford to pay for their own.
But make no mistake, it's an indictment of public services. You know, the ones that don't check fire hydrants, keep reservoirs full, act quickly, maintain appropriate staffing and equipment levels.

To clarify my #3: I have no objection to people hiring free market security and firefighting services to protect their property. However, this is not a solution to the problem of government bungling essential services.
If both my neighbors' houses are on fire, the chances of a single private company saving mine are low to none. Likewise, the homeowner in question paid twice: once in mandatory taxes for a failed public sector response and then again for a private sector service. Would voters in California support privatizing the fire service more broadly? How about forestry management and fire prevention?
To turn the age old argument for big government on its head: What government cannot do, the private sector must provide. But government must first get out of the way, and citizen shouldn't be forced to pay for it twice.

This is class envy woke BS. If I was in this situation and had money to hire private firefighters I certainly would. But they deserve no sympathy. These are the people bankrolling the campaigns of unqualified, severely incompetent diversity hires that check some weird box in their faux-moral addled brains. Elections have consequences. It’s not a game.

If I had the money to do this, I would. We live in an area where we lose power a few times a year. We have a generator, Starlink and an RV motorhome. We are well-situated to ride it out for a few days. Not all of my neighbors have that. Everyone who lives in my area has the resources to do the same, they just choose not to. I am more than willing to share and have even offered from time to time. I begrudge no one who has more than me. For the most part, they earned it.

Good for him.
As pointed out, it may not be a wise choice because of all the surrounding disaster, but it’s his choice to make.
I live in a very wooded area. We’ve had some big fires. I built my house out of stone, concrete, metal, and hardy board (concrete boards). It’s designed by an architect to survive a fire.
I cut trees far back and thinned my property well. Even have a concrete driveway/walkway around the perimeter and routinely have fallen leaves/pine needles removed.
People like me had houses were “miraculously” saved. Now, a lot of divine help is needed and given, but doing what you can do on your own is necessary.
And there, that apparently also requires a private fire department.

If you see disaster coming and use your own resources to prepare for it - what's the problem? He didn't take resources from other people, they trucked in their own water. How many wealthy neighbors had private security because they didn't think the regular cops could protect their property? How much toxic debris did this NOT add to the general eco-disaster human fecklessness failed to prevent? Does no one teach Aesop's fables any more? I'll bet the grasshopper hates and envies the ant.

These people are using their own money to hire people to do a job for them. How is this "evil"? This is the free-market economy that you see most posters on this site claim to support over socialism. Now most of the posters on this post are calling it "evil".
Would not every sane person do everything in their power and using their available resources to stop their house from burning down if the neighborhood was burning? I know I would.
I really thought it was liberals who screamed "eat the rich". Apparently, I was wrong!!!!

Look at it this way, those of you who hate the rich because they can afford private services like this: Saving their property could accidentally save their neighbors' property too, by creating a fire break. and it frees the public emergency responders to try to help others
I'm a little surprised that so many Lucianners begrudge the rich or celebrated being able to acquire private services. Do you hate your neighbor if they can afford a lawn care crew and you have to mow your own lawn?
