It was a month after her son's election as vice president of the United States and JD Vance 's mother wondered why the city of his birth had yet to recognize him. “I just think it would be really nice if we could acknowledge that this is his hometown and put up some signs," Beverly Aikins told the city council in Middletown, Ohio, where she and Vance's sister still live, in early December. [SNIP] Perhaps in another historical moment, a few signs would seem like a no-brainer, but not this year and not for this person.

I read his book, "Hillbilly Elegy". Good grief. Talk about someone who overcame a terrible home situation. Marine Vet and now to be VP. Congratulations, J.D.

Adding “tuckey” to a small towns name is a) hilarious and b) has been done forever. We call our closest town Bostuckey and call our local Dollar General bostuckey Walmart. What a bunch of weenies. If you get a chance watch JD going to visit his Memaws gravesite. It’s quite touching.

Since Gov. Greg Abbott launched his border security mission, Operation Lone Star, in 2021, OLS officers have apprehended more than 530,600 illegal border crossers. They’ve also made more than 50,000 criminal arrests, with more than 43,000 felony charges reported. They’ve also seized more than 622 million lethal doses of fentanyl – enough to kill everyone in the U.S., Mexico and Canada combined. They’re also continuing to arrest “Special Interest Aliens,” those flagged for potential terrorist ties. In Hidalgo County, an OLS Texas Department of Public Safety brush team apprehended four SIAs who illegally entered the U.S. from Turkey.
Trump More Catholic than the Pope? 12 replies

At no point in recent Catholic Church history has a pope and a U.S. president seemed to be in such perfect harmony as soon-to-be ex-President Biden and Pope Francis – whose reign seems to be stretching into infinity. [SNIP] As a friend of mine said who lived in Buenos Aires when Francis was cardinal-archbishop there, “He’s always hated the Latin Mass; he’s always been a pseudo-socialist; he’s always hated the English language and he has little to zero love for the United States.” How’s that for a Holy Father?

When Kid Rock takes the stage Sunday at Donald Trump’s Make America Great Again Rally in Washington, DC, he’ll also mark nearly a decade of friendship with the president-elect. The news that Rock — born Robert James Ritchie — would be performing at the concert on the eve of Trump’s inauguration was not surprising. The “Cowboy” musician, 54, has been one of Trump’s most effusive and at times rabid supporters since the reality TV star-turned-politician won the presidential election in 2016. Before the Republican primaries had even kicked off that year, Rock voiced his support for the former “Apprentice” host, 78.

Liberals claim that they care about other people, but the real mark of liberal governments is how little they care about their own people. [SNIP] As Canadians grapple with astronomical grocery prices, troublingly high numbers of people are flocking to food banks to feed their families. Last March alone, two million Canadians visited food banks—a staggering 90 per cent increase from 2019—and the most recent figures estimate that 12,000 new users access them every month. Food banks aren’t just frequented by unhoused and precariously employed folks anymore, either: now, one in five users has a steady job.

A theatre in Paris which is known for its radical shows and exhibitions has been occupied by more than 250 African migrants after they were let in for a free event five weeks ago. The Gaîté Lyrique theatre in Paris staged the conference, entitled Reinventing the welcome for refugees in France, on December 10. It involved talks hosted by academics from top universities and Red Cross officials, and saw activists welcome in the migrants. But when the conference was finished, the migrants, who mainly come from France's former west African colonies, refused to leave the venue. Still occupied, the leftist theatre now faces going out of business.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb said on Tuesday that his country had stopped the crew of a Russia-linked oil tanker just minutes before it caused catastrophic damage to undersea cables in the Baltic Sea."Had it continued for another 12 minutes, the carnage would have been much worse than the four basic cables that were there," Stubb told reporters at this week's Baltic-focused NATO summit in Helsinki. The tanker, the Eagle S, was seized in late December as Finland probed recent damage to its Estlink-2 power line, one of two vital cables carrying electricity in the Baltic Sea.

Tucker Carlson has made a shocking claim about the mysterious drones that plagued New Jersey for over a month, saying they were controlled by Chinese mothership satellite. The first sightings appeared over the Picatinny Arsenal in Rockaway and President-elect Donald Trump's golf course in Bedminster in November, followed by thousands more in the skies. While the US government was quick to dismiss claims they were foreign adversaries, Carlson claimed he was told otherwise. He said 'an intel person' told him that the drones 'were in fact Chinese,' explaining the US government took down a Chinese satellite 'that was a command and control satellite for these drones.'

As the Los Angeles Fire Department faced extraordinary warnings of life-threatening winds, top commanders decided not to assign for emergency deployment roughly 1,000 available firefighters and dozens of water-carrying engines in advance of the fire that destroyed much of the Pacific Palisades and continues to burn. [SNIP] Fire officials chose not to order the firefighters to remain on duty for a second shift last Tuesday as the winds were building — which would have doubled the personnel on hand — and staffed just five of more than 40 engines that are available to aid in battling wildfires, according to the records obtained by The Times.
Biden Names Aircraft Carrier After Draft

I remember the bumper stickers of “Vietnam veterans are sleeping on the street while a draft dodger sleeps in the White House” from the Clinton era. Like so many things that people used to be outraged about, that sort of thing became normalized as Republicans gave way and accepted that as the new moral order of things. Biden then helped normalize it further by naming an aircraft carrier after Bill Clinton. Since there’s a vessel named after Harvey Milk, a pedophile, naming Navy vessels after sex predators has been covered. As a basic matter of course, nothing should be named after living people. There should be no Obama streets.

The Government has today decided to assign the Migration Agency the task of "swiftly taking further and powerful measures" to ensure that the requirements in citizenship cases are upheld. "It is currently in practice impossible to revoke a citizenship, says Migration Minister Johan Forssell (M)." "It underlines the importance of never granting Swedish citizenship to individuals who may pose a threat to Swedish security." The Migration Agency already tightened controls in 2024 to detect potential security threats. The additional measures the Government now wants to see are motivated by the serious security situation and the increased risk of security-threatening individuals coming to Sweden.

On Friday afternoon, CNN's senior national security analyst, Juliette Kayyem, preemptively tried to undermine President-elect Donald Trump from being able to take credit for lower border numbers after he takes office as the ex-Barack Obama administration member and former Democrat politician suggested that President Joe Biden had already fixed the problem, and that Trump would only be taking credit for low numbers that already exist. As Kayyem and CNN News Central host Brianna Keilar discussed the Senate confirmation hearings for Homeland Security Secretary-designate Kristi Noem, Kayyem asserted that "the immigration agenda has nothing to do with enforcement anymore. The numbers are down -- the Southern border numbers are down."

The US Treasury Department will start taking "extraordinary measures" next week to avoid risking a default on government debt, Secretary Janet Yellen said Friday, days before President-elect Donald Trump takes office. With the government reaching its borrowing limit, the department would start making the moves on Tuesday, the day after the inauguration, Yellen said in a letter to congressional leaders. That will mean Trump's administration has to grapple immediately with the issue of the debt ceiling. In the past, Congress has routinely voted to lift this bar, but that tool has become a contentious issue, with Republican budget hawks calling for drastic spending reductions instead.

A lot of us Catholics have been weirded out by President Trump's closeness to Catholic culture. We couldn't figure out where it came from. Last year, he wished the Virgin Mary a happy birthday. He tweeted an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. He issued praise for All Saints Day. (Snip) It all began a few years ago when Father Mann was walking through a Queens cemetery and came upon the gravesite of Trump’s parents and grandparents. “It was slightly overgrown,” Father Mann recalled. “I thought this shouldn’t be. This is a historic site. So, I went and bought a weed whacker and some decorations and fixed up the plot.

We and many others had fun yesterday at Joe Biden’s expense. He tweeted an announcement: the Equal Rights Amendment has been adopted! It’s the law of the land! No one took it seriously; if a president really tried to change the Constitution via executive order, he would be impeached and driven from office. Personally, I doubt Biden has any idea that he tweeted the supposed adoption of the ERA. I assume that was done by some nameless intern in the White House. Democrats see no problem with the fact that we have a president who has no idea what is going on. Happily, we have only two more days to go.
