It was a month after her son's election as vice president of the United States and JD Vance 's mother wondered why the city of his birth had yet to recognize him.
“I just think it would be really nice if we could acknowledge that this is his hometown and put up some signs," Beverly Aikins told the city council in Middletown, Ohio, where she and Vance's sister still live, in early December. [SNIP] Perhaps in another historical moment, a few signs would seem like a no-brainer, but not this year and not for this person.

A theatre in Paris which is known for its radical shows and exhibitions has been occupied by more than 250 African migrants after they were let in for a free event five weeks ago.
The Gaîté Lyrique theatre in Paris staged the conference, entitled Reinventing the welcome for refugees in France, on December 10.
It involved talks hosted by academics from top universities and Red Cross officials, and saw activists welcome in the migrants. But when the conference was finished, the migrants, who mainly come from France's former west African colonies, refused to leave the venue.
Still occupied, the leftist theatre now faces going out of business.

Finnish President Alexander Stubb said on Tuesday that his country had stopped the crew of a Russia-linked oil tanker just minutes before it caused catastrophic damage to undersea cables in the Baltic Sea."Had it continued for another 12 minutes, the carnage would have been much worse than the four basic cables that were there," Stubb told reporters at this week's Baltic-focused NATO summit in Helsinki.
The tanker, the Eagle S, was seized in late December as Finland probed recent damage to its Estlink-2 power line, one of two vital cables carrying electricity in the Baltic Sea.

Tucker Carlson has made a shocking claim about the mysterious drones that plagued New Jersey for over a month, saying they were controlled by Chinese mothership satellite.
The first sightings appeared over the Picatinny Arsenal in Rockaway and President-elect Donald Trump's golf course in Bedminster in November, followed by thousands more in the skies.
While the US government was quick to dismiss claims they were foreign adversaries, Carlson claimed he was told otherwise.
He said 'an intel person' told him that the drones 'were in fact Chinese,' explaining the US government took down a Chinese satellite 'that was a command and control satellite for these drones.'

Embattled Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley has been accused of harassment and retaliation by a former top city official who claims she was fired for calling out her alleged misconduct and 'failures of leadership.' [SNIP] Among her complaints were Crowley allegedly not promoting people on merit, failing to consistently enforce rules and regulations impartially, badgering and neglecting civilian staff, and violating city contract procedures and ethics rules.
Park claims Crowley and Saunders then began 'retaliating' against her by trying to embarrass her in front of command staff to 'intimidate her into silence', ordering her colleagues not to engage with her.

As the Los Angeles Fire Department faced extraordinary warnings of life-threatening winds, top commanders decided not to assign for emergency deployment roughly 1,000 available firefighters and dozens of water-carrying engines in advance of the fire that destroyed much of the Pacific Palisades and continues to burn. [SNIP] Fire officials chose not to order the firefighters to remain on duty for a second shift last Tuesday as the winds were building — which would have doubled the personnel on hand — and staffed just five of more than 40 engines that are available to aid in battling wildfires, according to the records obtained by The Times.

I remember the bumper stickers of “Vietnam veterans are sleeping on the street while a draft dodger sleeps in the White House” from the Clinton era. Like so many things that people used to be outraged about, that sort of thing became normalized as Republicans gave way and accepted that as the new moral order of things.
Biden then helped normalize it further by naming an aircraft carrier after Bill Clinton. Since there’s a vessel named after Harvey Milk, a pedophile, naming Navy vessels after sex predators has been covered.
As a basic matter of course, nothing should be named after living people. There should be no Obama streets.

The Government has today decided to assign the Migration Agency the task of "swiftly taking further and powerful measures" to ensure that the requirements in citizenship cases are upheld.
"It is currently in practice impossible to revoke a citizenship, says Migration Minister Johan Forssell (M)."
"It underlines the importance of never granting Swedish citizenship to individuals who may pose a threat to Swedish security."
The Migration Agency already tightened controls in 2024 to detect potential security threats. The additional measures the Government now wants to see are motivated by the serious security situation and the increased risk of security-threatening individuals coming to Sweden.

Donald Trump announced the creation of a powerful new government agency that will collect billions of dollars in taxes and tariffs from foreign countries.
The brand new agency - cleverly titled the External Revenue Service - does the exact opposite of the already established Internal Revenue Service (IRS), which taxes Americans.
It's the second department that Trump has unilaterally created after tapping billionaire Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy to lead DOGE.
‘I am today announcing that I will create the EXTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE to collect our Tariffs, Duties, and all Revenue that come from Foreign sources,’ Trump wrote on social media.

Nearly 1,000 people have signed an online petition calling on a cinema in Brooklyn to stop screening a film about the Munich massacre during the 1972 Summer Olympics.
September 5, directed by Tim Fehlbaum, follows the terrorist attack carried out by the Palestinian militant organisation Black September. [SNIP] A petition organised by a group of New York cinema workers is calling on the cinema to stop platforming the film and has amassed more than 1,000 signatures.
The workers describe the film as “Zionist propaganda”, which misrepresents the militants who carried out the massacre as “antisemitic terrorists”.

McDonald's is being sued over a program that grants scholarships to Latino students, a move that came days after the fast-food giant ditched some of its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies.
The American Alliance for Equal Rights, which challenges race-based preference and discrimination, alleges the McDonald's HACER program discriminates against certain high school students.
Last week, McDonald's said it would adjust some of its DEI policies, which critics have deemed "woke."

In an interview with Scripps News on Monday, the wife of an American held by the Taliban in Afghanistan expressed her frustration with the lack of progress in getting her husband home.
It's been more than 800 days since the Taliban tookAnna Corbett's husband, Ryan. [SNIP] Over the weekend, though, the president called her and the families of other Americans held in Afghanistan.
However, Corbett said she came away from the call disappointed. She said while there is a deal on the table with the Taliban, the president indicated to them that the U.S. will not take the deal.
