They were laughed at as misfit men trying to be women. Later, there was Bruce Jenner, who also was a transvestite and who later named himself Caitlin Jenner and demanded everyone else call him by that name. Jenner is still a cross-dressing man in women’s clothing. How did Americans get so afraid of calling them transvestites?

I don’t know if you’re old enough to remember the musical Brigadoon. It was about a Scottish village that disappears in the mists and only reappears once every hundred years. The District of Columbia and its federal components often remind me of that. On a local level (perhaps a tradition from pre-air conditioning days) the place is somnolent for all practical purposes in the summer and even through much of the spring. A recent article in the Wall Street Journal by a Jess Bravin reported that attorneys general of many blue states are not going to give up quietly when Donald Trump, as president, begins to honor his election promises, such as the mass deportation of illegals. “A host of blue states are staffing up and building out legal battle plans for Trump’s return trip to the White House.”
