Charlie Woods, the 15-year-old son of Tiger Woods, failed in his first attempt to qualify for a U.S. Open, shooting a 9-over 81 on Thursday.
The teen's scorecard included one birdie, four bogeys and three double bogeys at the Legacy Golf & Tennis Club in Port St. Lucie, Florida. He shot a 40 on the front side and 41 on the back nine. Woods finished 61st in a field of 74. Only the top-five finishers and two alternates advance out of local qualifying.

Charlie and LeBron James’ son need a more realistic view of their skill level.

Maybe he’s not a superstar, but 81 is pretty dang good for a real score by 15 year old on a true championship course.

The kid is 15 years old and he was not afraid to go out there and compete. I admire that regardless of his score.

Ever shoot an 81 anyone?
When and where did you do it?

Charlie Woods is just 15. Give him some time, IF golf is what he wants to devote his life to. It's never fair to compare generations after great champions. I knew a few in my time. Let children develop naturally.
(I don't know how Formula 1 multiple champion Max Verstappen descended from the mediocre Jos, best known for the most impressive pit fire ever seen. Accidents happen. I mean genetically. Max is amazing. Jos was not. Get lost, obtrusive dad.)

My best score was a 76, best round I ever shot and still have the card, shot a few 78-70 and a bunch of low 80s when I played all the time.
But that was from the Regular Men's tee (white), From the Blues I broke 90 once, playing the strict rules of golf.
A 81 from the pro tees on a championship course is very good especially for a 15 year old. I heard Tiger say that Charlie can out drive him sometime.

I had an 81 once going on to the 14th. Then everything fell apart. Wheels came off.
Give the kid a break.

Remember, Charley Woods was reared by a very different man from the one who raised his father, Tiger. Give the young boy time.
Enough said.

My best round was 61, or ten under par, including a ball out of bounds early in the round that kept me from breaking 60. Although I don't play anymore because of fourteen long screws in my lumbat and cervical spine, I am a professional golfer, and golf is my game. At one time, I was a fair player. Memories now.

Great shooting, Poster 16. You have me by a dozen. I had a 6-7 footer on final hole for a par round of 72. Reached for the ball, but it did 360 degree lip out and stopped 1/2 inch short. Golf Gods sent a reminder. The Riverton (WY) Golf Club is a good test. Long time site of U.S. Open Local Qualifier.

81? Naw! Anyone competitive at his age isn’t shooting 81’s! Too much pressure on this kid to be the next Tiger! Leave him alone and let him live!

Re #17: We both succumbed to Captain Justice, the god of golf. He gets us all, leads us to humility. No one other than Kim Jong-il has ever had a perfect round. Oddly enough, it's the bad shots throughout my career that I remember more vividly than the good ones. Fifty years later, the losses--there weren't many of those--still sting. They're hard to get over. Competition at both amateur and professional levels was an incredibly intense experience. It's to live for. The golf course was my office, a place where I belonged.

I’ve shot 71! My best round! Have also shot lots of 81’s and worse! I’m no pro and I won’t ever be! Took lessons for two years from Mike Bender. He said he can’t stand there and drain 15 to 20 footers all day! That is what separates them from us!
