Although I was born into a typical Democrat New York City family, I registered as a Republican as soon as I was old enough to vote.
Why? Just to be different but at heart, I was as enamored of John F. Kennedy as the nuns at my high school. My first vote was for Democrat Hubert Humphrey, and I worked for Robert F. Kennedy’s senatorial campaign. But I was never really a Republican at heart until Ronald Reagan ran for president in 1976.
Before that epiphany, I was as clueless as the rest of America, and when a German coworker asked me the difference between the two major parties,

Everybody's gotta love Alicia! As I recall, in 1965 the Pubbies controlled the Congress and not a single Democrat voted in favor of the Civil Rights Act of that year; however, Johnson signed the legislation.

Thanks, Alicia, for the history lesson. I’ve followed your columns since the 90s, (Well, I think since then.) Thanks for your insights and wisdom. Let’s hope razón prevails this election season. Lord, we need it!

No doubt the GOP is the lesser of two evils, but I've grown weary of voting for evil.
The republicans may have started with a pure heart, but they have shifted to immoral and greedy.
Not unlike the sweet little girl in Sunday school who ended up being the girl turning tricks for money.

Old one?
Even in Lincoln's day, many Republican officials identified as "Republican" merely to gain power. The Swamp has been there since the early 1800s, made up of wealthy ruthless individuals who sought government positions, not to serve, but to protect their wealth and acquire more. They isolate and ridicule honest men and women, who WOULD serve, if they could.
Even if we had term limits, these paragon of Greed would buy their power, through puppets, but at least then the rot would be a step removed.
I sometimes feel a treason trial needs to be done on each elected official, when they leave office, with the penalty, if it is found they used their authority to enrich themselves instead of the country, to be executed, immediately.
Then, you might chase the Swamp monsters out!

Those were the good old days!

Yes to this. Our country has the most amazing and illuminating history. The GOP was for forty acres and a mule and the Democrats would not, just as she says. MLK was a Republican. Remember how many times you have heard the phrase "first Black person elected to Congress from ** since Reconstruction"? What that means is, in the Republican-led Reconstruction there WERE Black congressmen. Then the KKK dialed back on that. Some of the Democratic statues hidden in the Capitol basement are of truly shocking people..

When Alicia speaks, you listen. She is saying what Dick Morris said some time ago and is something I have always done…you vote for the party, not the man! I don’t care what any Democrat says, even if he/she speaks with common sense. The Democrats lie and will always toe the party line. The trouble is that Republicans go along to get along, but they are still better than commie Democrats.

Just recently I came across the word, froward. I admit I thought it was spelled wrong and should have been forward. Then, I looked up the definition and found "habitually disposed to disobedience and opposition". I was reminded of this word while reading Alicia Colon's article. Democrats sure fit the bill. The thing of it is they think they are forward-thinking kind of people, progressive if you will.
Nope, I think Democrats are froward-thinking kind of people. . .

Yes, but the GOP had many members who absolutely hated Reagan, too. These RINOs worked with the Dems to cripple many of his policies.

In my state candidates switch parties at the drop of a hat because voters pull the lever for the party, not the candidate. It works, and as a result we get some awfully sleazy characters in office.
And now that democrat=communist and republican=spineless wimp, we arent left with much.

I agree with Alicia but I think the title of the article is unfortunate. I certainly don't want to return to the Rockefeller, Bush country club Republican era.

The current iteration of "Republicans" is better known as Whigs before the pro-slavery branch split off.
