Three multimillion-dollar homes in Southern California teeter precariously on the edge of a cliffside following a landslide over the weekend.
The collapse occurred in Dana Point, Orange County, on Friday, and sent mud and debris sliding down the 150-feet chasm below.
As of Sunday, no evacuations have been ordered, and engineering crews were assessing the structural integrity of the homes - the only three set on the cliffside. Residents of the affected properties have been advised to remain vigilant, and prepare for the looming possibility of relocation.
The three affected homes are now largely left at the mercy of Mother Nature, though rains that recently inundated the region look to have past.

Stupid is as stupid does. California has had problems with landslides and homes sliding into the ocean for years. Even inland homes on cliffs have slid into the valley. I won't cry for their problems.

Those homes were built on what is mostly sand. There’s something in the Bible about that.

Just because you had the money doesn't mean you should. Not sure if there is ever a good time to build a house hanging off a cliff.

That’s a beautiful stretch of coast, I can certainly understand wanting to live there, I used to keep a sailboat in Dana Point harbor. But yeah, it’s unstable in many places, and even with geologists and engineers checking and signing off, it seems that ancient and previously unknown landslide areas will start moving given enough water. The thing is, losses due to land movement are typically not covered by insurance. AFAIK it’s always been this way, so those who choose to live there are taking the (big) risks.

Obvious financial fraud. Hanging over a cliff, there's no way they are worth $16 million. Call the Ag in NY, She has a new case.

Building a mansion on the edge of a dirt cliff takes a special kind of stupidity.

Some of us used to spearfish in the waters off Dana Point.
Followed up with some great barbecues.
Before all the high end homes were constructed.
Good times!!

I can think of a hundred places I would rather build a home. Countless mountain views or desert sunrises or ocean sunsets. A fool and his money...

If that was granite fine! But it’s loose soil on a huge hill! Beautiful? Yes! But deadly!

Three mansions practically on top of each other. Not a lot of privacy.

People who can build five million dollar houses can generally afford to lose those houses without recompense. So, while it's a shame, it's also a write-off.

The person who granted the government permit to build is probably retired on a beach somewhere.

^My thoughts too. I can't believe they even issue building permits for lots like that.
But it IS California...

I can’t access the article due to my ad blockers. Please tell me that one of those mansions belongs to Barbra Streisand!

All three houses are owned by old, white guys. I think BLM should go stand on the beach under the houses and protest.

You mean these homes WERE worth 16 million. They're not worth squat now. Of course, they may have these homes insured for a lot more than 16 million.

IMHO, it is stupid to build a structure on the edge of a body of water. If there is water around get yourself as high as possible away from the view. Just remember, God used the most destructive force of nature to rid the world of its deserving residents.

Californians need to go to the Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico and learn how to build on hill and moutain sides. You never see buildings slide down them there.

Poor writing, as expected, from the DMUK. I have birds around my house that insist on building mud nests on top of my floodlights and end up frying along with their eggs. One would think that people would know better but then again, this is Southern California.
