There are always Oscar snubs. But this one is striking the media as particularly egregious: Greta Gerwig wasn’t nominated for best director for Barbie — a film that was not only the biggest hit of the year and helped to bring moviegoers back to cinema with the success of “Barbenheimer,” but was also nominated for best picture and, by any measure, was a very tricky project to pull off. In addition, Barbie star Margot Robbie was snubbed for best actress, while Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera were nominated for supporting.

One preview was all it took for me to say no thanks.

Most of us aren't woke enough to sit through the preview, let alone the entire movie...

In a sane world, this movie would never have been made, much less have been considered for any kind of award for supposed excellence.

This is just Hollywood nonsense. This is completely unimportant to serious people.

I don't think I would recognize any of the actors and actresses mentioned in this story - - if they fell out of a tree and landed on me.
Who are these people - - and who cares?

I have a different take on this. Having been a Barbie fan since I was a little girl, I actually saw this movie with my young granddaughters and enjoyed it. Yes, there was a silly, woke, down-with-the-patriarchy message, but the realization of the Barbie world was very well done, as were the performances. If you could ignore the typical Hollywood slant—and I could—it was quite fun. It was popular in spite of the woke message, not because of it. Most people enjoyed it on a surface, fun level. Because of the hysterical reporting on it, I was expecting an Anti-Christ movie and was pleasantly surprised. Considering the garbage that gets nominated and wins these awards, that this movie was shut out is a shame. Great sets and costumes and clever writing, it could at least hold its own with other 2023 releases. So, flame away if you must…I’m used to it.

"How Is This Even Possible?”
How is it even possible that anyone but Greta Gerwig, her family and those who profit from her even care about this????

I am sure a movie about Barbie is stimulating to the unthinking but "The Sound of Freedom" is one for those who think and feel. Why didn't that film get top awards?

My lady friend dragged me to this movie and it was the dumbest movie I've ever seen. I wanted to leave. Like a good guy, I suffered through the whole thing but she isn't allowed to choose the movies we go to any more.

I had no desire to see this movie and believed the worst of the reviews about it. Then a couple of women for whom I have enormous respect told me how much they enjoyed the movie. Since I often recommend movies to them I finally decided, a few weeks ago, to watch this one. The story is a bit lame but the visuals were quite astounding. Since I was never a Barbie girl I didn't feel the same emotional attachment to the characters as my friends had. I wouldn't recommend it to any man or boy. But I must say that I was surprised to find the filmmaking aspects quite charming.
BTW if you haven't seen Boys in the Boat and The Holdovers, please treat yourself. Very different stories but both incredible films. I am now reading the book "Boys in the Boat" and the writing is just... well, elegant. The author got to know the story from the families of the athletes who competed in the '36 Olympics and crafted an intimate story with deep knowledge of the time and place. "Holdovers" is another gem starring Paul Giamatti (Bart's son). The dialogue is witty and highly emotional. The acting is simply breathtaking. I am thankful for the very creative people involved in the movie business who are able to rise up over the landscape of mediocrity and slut. It is amazing that God's own creatures share some of His creativity.

This is an outrage!! This is intolerable!! OF COURSE The Great Greta Gerwig should have been nominated for Best Director -- wasn't she just on the cover of Vanity Fair a month ago??!!
All is not lost, however. "Barbie" did garner 8 nominations -- sometimes a girl, even Barbie, just has to cope. And Gerwig, and Margot Robbie, made pots and pots of money out of "Barbie's" success. That would be consolation enough for me.

#7 - No, I did not see it but it looked like a cheesy, campy, fun movie with lots of CGI geared for Swifties and older (no offense) Barbie fans with Margot Robbie correctly cast as the lead. And, yes, it's up for Best Costume Design - but Best Picture? Seriously? Tom Cruise movies also make lots of money and bring crowds into theaters, but nothing more.
