Just as President Joe Biden starts showering hundreds of billions more of taxpayers’ money to “electrify” the nation’s fleet of automobiles, the bottom is falling out of the EV market. The latest indication is the sharp drop in prices for used EVs. A report from iSeeCars.com, a search engine for auto buyers, found that the average price for all cars declined 5% in 2023 compared with 2022. But the resale price EVs plunged 33%. While a used EV sold for an average of $52,821 in 2022, it went for less than $35,000 in 2023,

When I bought a model 3 new in 2019, the used ones were going for 95% of new msrp. This is EV used prices coming down to where non EV used prices have traditionally been. Likely because there are now enough used EV to create a market. This is basic supply and demand. Please don't lie with statistics. It's unbecoming and will make you look foolish repeating these things on other sites.

EVs are mainly batteries with very high cost of replacement, so used are about worthless.

Biden's dream is for the domestic car companies to fail by forcing then to embrace science fair vehicles, jack up the price of gas vehicles to cover their losses, and make car ownership unaffordable for average consumers. That dream is proceeding apace.

The replacement cost of a battery is like an IC car requiring a new drive train. It is impossible that used EV prices will remain at the same percentage as gasoline cars. Only Kalifornians are that stupid.

A recent news story was about someone needing to replace the battery for their electric vehicle. Seems the cost to replace the battery in the vehicle costs as much as the car did brand new. Why would anyone buy a used electric vehicle when no one really knows how long the batteries last but knowing that replacing them might cost 40 or 50 grand.

EVs are usable IF you own a single family home where you can install your own high speed charging station AND you only use it to drive around town, always well within range of your home. Otherwise, not so much. Of course, the end goal is not to force most people to trade in their gas or diesel powered vehicles for EVs. Everyone knows that our electric grid could not handle millions of EVs, even before the left manages to ban natural gas power plants. The goal is to force most people give up their private vehicles and rely on mass transit.

I would think that the object over time is to improve on the batteries and the way they are installed. Knowing this buying a car that is say7 years old, that battery may not even be made any more when you purchase the car used. With an ICE powered car you can test drive it and listen to the noise the motor makes listen to the drive train , You can judge the condition of the car. I don't know any way you can judge the condition of the battery or the motors of a battery powered car

This should be a market decision. Remove any subsidies on the EV cars and anything to do with charging them. If someone wants an EV and is willing to pay the unsubsidized cost, more power to them. They can waste their own money as they choose. The worst thing about EVs and Biden's plans for them is that the whole thing could not possibly succeed. It would have been a HUGE disaster that would have been almost impossible to reverse without enormous pain. Further, it would have impacted the poor the most, as well off people would have figured out alternatives and paid for them.

Still too expensive to buy and too expensive to maintain. I will wait and see what a G4 or G5 EV goes for. The price has to go down, and the problems have to be ironed out. Our government and others are heavily invested in EV technology. Only question. Are they serious investors or are they looters who will cut and run after making a score. Considering the anti-American bent in Washington, they may well be looters who intend to implode the economy and get rich in the process. Was a passenger in a Tesla the other day. They had to stop and get recharged. There was a convenience store with six charging stations. All in use. Had to wait for one to become available. Took about 5 minutes. Two more Teslas came in after us, but nobody tried jumping ahead of us. Everyone was being civil. We did not wait for a full charge and disconnected once we were good for 100 miles (more than enough to get home on). Total wait was around 15 minutes. While waiting, we discussed EVs. The owner claims EV drivers are polite. Doubt they are any more polite than the average person. She also said the market for EVs are people who like to have the latest techy gadgets which is believable. Time will tell if EVs catch on. Currently they are a big fad in my view.

Worst thing about the EV's is the replacement battery cost, and likely the disposal of the old battery pack. Then, if one catches fire (they do) it takes roughly 60,000 gallons of water to extinguish. Most EV's are being bought by wealthy people who want to publicly show they are "doing something" for the environment.

There is nothing there to collapse because the EV market was built on smoke, mirrors and taxpayer-provided subsidies. The idea of a quiet and efficient electric car was tempting to those who bought into the fantasy and did not consider the negatives, which are many. I suspect that the last potential customer has already bought his EV and many are unwilling to admit to a stupid mistake. We can not presently stop the US Government from wasting our money on studies of Arctic ice and the one quarter degree increase in temperature every ten years due to the Earth's orbital patterns but they can not force us to buy something that we do not want unless it's Obamacare, which was forced into law with a crowbar. The Supreme Court will not easily be able to reclassify the purchase of an EV as a tax but guaranteed, they will try at some point before the mental midgets in the Biden administration finally throw in the towel on their green revolution.

Apparently a large percentage of EV "owners" are sufficiently untrustworthy of the technology and the residual value of the vehicles that even they decided to lease, putting the whole 'residual value' issue squarely into the laps of the car dealers, although perhaps the manufacturers have some agreement on this with the dealers, sharing risk. And .....enough stories like "buy a $16,000 EV and find out that it won't work any more after a couple of months unless you buy a $25,000 battery" are enough to scare people away from even considering buying a used EV unless the vehicle comes with a brand new battery. A dealer adding a 'free' $25,000 battery to a $16,000 retail value vehicle is NOT going to happen. So, the dealers basically cannot give away used EVs. So, compare a $35,000 new conventional car or truck which after you drive it for 100K miles retains at least 50% of that value on the used car market to a $60,000 EV which after you drive it 40,000 miles retains almost no value. Raw vehicle cost per mile of the first example is around 17.5 cents per mile. Raw vehicle cost of the EV is $1.50 per mile. So, people are figuring out that an EV is likely to cost 8 or 9 times as much per mile to drive.....AND can be incredibly inconvenient in any role beyond an around town commuter car. You can fool all of the people some of the time, and you can fool some of the people all of the time, but you can't fool enough people into making them buy a second EV, ever, or their friends and family of buying one at all.

Ray Charles could see this coming. Check this out: 'New EV Deemed Total Loss After Battery Replacement Costs More Than Car Itself' https://www.westernjournal.com/new-ev-deemed-total-loss-battery-replacement-costs-car/ the quote to replace the battery came in at $61,000 (which is $46,000 in U.S. dollars). That is a cost of $6,000 more than what he paid for the car when it was brand-new.

Easy solution will be another "cash for clunkers" program, Biden can buy up all the 5YO EVs as their batteries die, after all government money is free. They can set the price to whatever an ICE would sell for.

After spending three years largely ignoring the border, the mainstream press is suddenly all over it, with headlines blaring about a “surge,” “crisis” and “call for action.” Why now? Last week CNN reported that a “December migrant surge” at the southern border was the “largest in more than two decades.” Several other news outlets used similar language. The New York Times warned that “surging” Mexico border crossings “push U.S. resources to the brink.” In another story, CNN even described the situation as a “crisis.” Weirdly, the press is even exaggerating the current “surge.” Consider that CNN story, which says:

The reality is that the universal systems in other wealthy nations are cruel, cold bureaucracies. The Golden State’s leftist Democrat-dominated legislature loves to grandstand as a champion of the downtrodden and the working poor, even if the policies they enact end up hurting those people the most. That’s certainly the case with the state’s minimum wage hike, which is set to hit in 2024. The state will raise its overall mandated minimum-wage rate from $16 an hour to $16.50 an hour overall, starting in 2024.
