The Media and The Hostages: In 1979 and Today

It was November 4, 1979. The President of the United States was Democrat Jimmy Carter. Carter was seen by many on the GOP side as a weak president, which was part of the reason Republican Ronald Reagan was making another try for the GOP nomination to face off with Carter in the soon-to-arrive 1980 presidential election. On the Democrat side, the left wing of Carter’s party was so upset with him that Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy, last of the stars who were 1960’s heroes the Kennedy brothers, made up his mind to challenge Carter for renomination. And then. Iranian Islamic radicals had overthrown the ruling Shah.

I always remember a story that Carter's Secretary of State (Cyrus Vance?) said after the negotiations. I think they were in Tunisia. The Iranians were bringing up all sorts of new of issues they wanted to solve right up to the end of Carter's term. At one point, one of the Iranian "diplomats" told Vance that "hey, we can finish this up in a couple of days, what's the rush." Vance replied, well, at 12:00 noon Washington time tomorrow, I am on a plane out of here as I can no longer negotiate on behalf of the USA . President Reagan's new envoy, whomever he is, will be starting over and any agreements we have now are null and void. The Iranians started getting serious about negotiating soon after that conversation.

The Iranians also played with Carter the way a cat plays with a half-dead mouse. They would make noises about a breakthrough in negotiations, then pull the rug out from under Carter. After the catastrophic rescue attempt (which failed due to equipment failure and a complicated, flawed plan) the Iranians danced in the streets. Not surprisingly the media insisted the 1980 was 'too close to call'' until the bright red election map sent Carter back to Peanutland.

Iran is a bully who uses other nations to fight their wars. Bloody the nose of a bully and they will run home. Israel should wipe out their oil production capabilities and the official US response should be "nice job".

The United States is “more vulnerable from inside terror attacks than at any time in its history,” former President Donald Trump said on Tuesday following a memo from the San Diego Field Office Intelligence Division of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) warning that members of terrorist groups — namely Hamas, Hezbollah, and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) — could be encountered at the porous southern border. “With the millions of people that Crooked Joe Biden has allowed into the United States through his ridiculous Open Borders Policy, mostly young men, and large numbers of TERRORISTS, the U.S. is more vulnerable from inside terror attacks than at any time in its history,

Los Angeles came in second and most surprisingly New York City trailed closely behind at third. Meanwhile, Washington DC and San Francisco, remained in their same positions as last year in the top five.

President Joe Biden’s foreign policy chief, Antony Blinken, says Americans must give foreigners the opportunity to migrate into their U.S. homeland. “You have to give them an opportunity to do that,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said at an event at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy in Texas. Blinken did not urge his government peers to enforce the immigration laws that protect Americans from employers who hire illegal immigrants that undercut Americans’ bargaining power in the labor market. He also did not mention the many polls showing the growing public opposition to Biden’s mass illegal migration.

It’s an Empire State of decline. Beset by high taxes and quality of life woes, 545,498 New Yorkers left for other states in 2022, according to US Census data. Top destinations included Florida — the most popular choice — followed by New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania as well as more distant states like Texas and California. The exodus was partly offset by more people moving to the Empire State in 2022 than any year over the last decade, with 301,000 new residents making the transition. Despite that uptick, New York still suffered a net population loss of 244,000.

Since the October 7 Hamas massacre of Israeli civilians, House Democratic members of the “Squad” have drawn harsh criticism from even members of their own party for their rabidly anti-Israel posturing. But rather than shining a spotlight on the controversy, the broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, and NBC) instead dutifully sheltered them from public scrutiny; in fact, since the attack, they have not received even a second of airtime on the evening newscasts. MRC analysts combed through all of ABC, CBS, and NBC’s evening newscasts from October 7 through October 22 for any mention of the House Democrats colloquially known as “the Squad.”

House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-KY) on Monday blew holes into James Biden’s reason for allegedly cutting President Joe Biden a $200,000 check in 2018, claiming it is a story contrived “out of their rear end.” James Biden, Joe Biden’s brother, denied the $200,000 check he gave Joe Biden was due to a pre-existing business relationship. He insisted the money was a return payment for money Joe Biden lent him. Comer believes the $200,000 payment is suspicious because the money flowed through a distressed entity, Americore, which loaned James Biden a total of $600,000. On March 1, 2018, Americore wired James Biden $200,000. That same day,

That is extreme ignorance (not to mention dangerous) when a senator is willing to impeach a president just because he doesn’t like him, all without knowing the facts.

It’s three weeks since Republicans ousted Kevin McCarthy. The House speaker will need to accomplish the seemingly impossible job of uniting the GOP majority. Emmer of Minnesota jumped ahead as the top vote-getter on early round ballots and was battling Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana on a fifth ballot. Others are dropping out including Florida newcomer Byron Donalds, who’s aligned with Donald Trump, and Kevin Hern of Oklahoma. The nominee will also need to win a majority in a House floor vote.

Friday afternoon, the Treasury Department reported that, despite a growing economy and low unemployment, the federal deficit shot up by $320 billion in fiscal year 2023. That’s unusual. But what’s really bizarre is why the deficit exploded. According to the report, overall spending actually dropped by 2% compared with 2022 as the COVID-19 spending splurge abated. What drove up the deficit this year was a sudden and completely unexpected 9% drop in tax revenues. Not only did revenues come up hundreds of billions lower than last year, but they were well below what everybody expected them to be.
