Special counsel Jack Smith said in a filing Thursday he is prepared to take former President Donald Trump to trial by Jan. 2 of next year over Trump's federal indictment for seeking to overturn the 2020 election.
Smith estimates it will take no longer than four to six weeks to present his case to a jury in Washington, D.C., according to the filing. "This trial date ... would give the defendant time to review the discovery in this case and prepare a defense, and would allow the Court and parties to fully litigate any pre-trial legal issues," Smith's office writes in the filing.
"Most importantly, a January 2 trial

The 16 Michigan Republicans who served as fake electors in 2020 have pleaded not guilty to the first-of-their-kind felony charges stemming from the Trump-backed election subversion plot.
Nine of the defendants were arraigned on the state charges Thursday at a virtual court hearing in Lansing. The other seven defendants already pleaded not guilty in the past few weeks.
The group of GOP activists were hit with state charges last month over their role former President Donald Trump’s seven-state plan to subvert the Electoral College and overturn the 2020 election results by supplanting lawful Democratic electors with fake Republican electors.
Each of the fake Michigan electors were charged with eight state felonies, including forgery,

Five Americans imprisoned in Iran have been placed under house arrest in the first step of a planned prisoner exchange between Tehran and Washington that will include the release of roughly $6 billion in Iranian government assets blocked under U.S. sanctions, according to a lawyer for one of the prisoners.
If the proposed agreement goes through, Iran will be allowed to access the funds only to buy food, medicine or other humanitarian purposes, in accordance with existing U.S. sanctions against the country. Under the agreement, Qatar’s central bank will oversee the funds.

Mayor Eric Adams issued a dire warning to President Biden, cautioning that the lack of federal funding to help the migrant crisis will eventually “decimate” the Big Apple — which serves as the “economic engine” of the country.
Adams slammed border states for creating a “funnel” to New York on “CBS Mornings” Thursday, saying, “New York City is the economic engine of this entire state and country. If you decimate this city, you’re going to decimate the foundation of what’s happening.” That foundation finally began to crumble earlier this month as dozens of migrants were left sleeping on the streets of Midtown outside the intake center at the Roosevelt Hotel

QUITO, Ecuador — An Ecuadorian presidential candidate known for speaking up against corruption was shot and killed Wednesday at a political rally in the capital, an attack that comes amid a wave of startling violence in the South American country.
President Guillermo Lasso confirmed the assassination of Fernando Villavicencio and suggested organized crime was behind his slaying. Villavicencio was one of eight candidates in the Aug. 20 presidential vote, though not the frontrunner.
“I assure you that this crime will not go unpunished,” Lasso said in a statement. “Organized crime has gone too far, but they will feel the full weight of the law.”

The Atlanta-area district attorney investigating former President Donald Trump and his allies has been lining up witnesses to appear before a grand jury in order to craft a narrative around how Trump and his supporters tried to reverse the results of the 2020 presidential election in the Peach State, according to people familiar with the matter.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is expected to spend two days presenting her case before a grand jury next week.
Willis could seek several indictments as she eyes a sweeping racketeering case that could cast Trump and several of his associates as operating as a criminal enterprise

Special counsel Jack Smith obtained a search warrant for the Twitter account of Donald Trump as part of his criminal investigation of the former president, an appeals court decision revealed Wednesday.
Twitter, now known as X, initially delayed production of the materials required by that warrant as it filed a court action seeking to block an order that it not disclose the existence of the warrant, the 34-page decision says. The ruling by the U.S. Court Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit upheld a lower-court judge's $350,000 contempt sanction on the social media company for failing to comply with the warrant until after a three-day deadline.

TALLAHASSEE – Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has again suspended a democratically elected state attorney, claiming her personal "political agenda" was interfering with her role prosecuting criminal cases for the state.
DeSantis announced State Attorney Monique Worrell's suspension Wednesday at Florida's capitol building, while taking a rare step away from his presidential campaign. Worrell was the elected prosecutor for Orange and Osceola counties. In his announcement, DeSantis contended Worrell failed to pursue appropriate charges in serious criminal cases during her time as a state attorney.

A previously unknown internal memo drafted by a lawyer allied with former President Donald Trump outlines a plan to overturn the 2020 election using fake slates of electors, according to a report.
The lawyer, Kenneth Chesebro, admitted that he was proposing “a bold, controversial strategy” that the US Supreme Court would “likely” reject, according to a copy of the Dec. 6, 2020, memo obtained by The New York Times. Still, he argued, it would focus attention on alleged voter fraud and buy the campaign time “to win litigation that would deprive Biden of electoral votes and/or add to Trump’s column,” the paper reported.

During an interview with The Weather Channel that is set to air on Wednesday, a portion of which aired on Tuesday, President Joe Biden said that he “wanted to stop all drilling on the East Coast and the West Coast and in the Gulf” but was blocked by the courts from doing so.
Weather Channel Meteorologist Stephanie Abrams asked, “Let’s talk Gen Z, because they’re going to play a big role in the next presidential election, and many of them are angry about the 7,000 oil and gas permits you approved since you’ve been in office. You promised no new drilling on federal land or offshore. Can you tell Gen Z
